Christmas Day passenger train services history.

I was just wondering if this year (25/12/2025) was a record for the most amount of Christmas Day services that have ever run? We had 236 services (made up of 16 normal trains and 220 inter terminal shuttles) which i think is more than ever before? Unless anyone knows differently?

There were 16 train services that finished on the 25th in the very early hours of the morning:

This is two 387 units going back and forth all day doing a total of 220 journeys. One of the 387 units (387131 this year) goes back and forth between T123 and T4 all day (a total of 55 journeys in each direction or 110 journeys total). One of the 387 units (387139 this year) goes back and forth between T123 and T5 all day (a total of 55 journeys in each direction or 110 journeys total). Those 220 journeys make up the only other Christmas Day passenger workings in the country.

I have two questions about both these categories of Christmas Day workings.

Firstly when did the Christmas Day terminal shuttles at Heathrow Airport start running? I do not think they have always run? Possibly the late 2000s or early 2010s was when it begun but i am trying to find an exact year?

Secondly when was the first time that some normal (not Heathrow Airport terminal shuttles) finished on Christmas Day like the 16 journeys this year? Certainly before the Elizabeth Line opened i am sure that the suburban services on the GEML and GWML finished on Christmas Eve earlier in the evening? Any idea if there were any like this before and what was the first year that such workings happened?

I think probably in the 1950s and before, when Christmas Day passenger services ran, (albeit to a reduced timetable), there would have been more than 236 services, and certainly more mileage operated by those services.

Glasgow had local area services on Christmas Day well into the 1970s and I believe was the last area to operate them.

Traditionally a service was provided on Christmas Day - essentially a fairly standard Sunday service - up until 1960. From 1961 a steadily reducing special service was provided, up until 1979 - 1980 was the first year of 'no services'.
Boxing Day services similarly were provided up to 1974 - only intermitently since then.

Railway Observer January 1962 describes the special Christmas Day 1961 service at Waterloo.

In accordance with a BTC directive the already reduced Christmas Day services were still further curtailed in 1961. The principal electric services operated at a two hourly frequency until about 10pm, but routes such as Chessington, Shepperton and the Hounslow Loop closed down after lunch. Five steam departures and five arrivals were scheduled at Waterloo. No service was provided west of Bournemouth or beyond Exeter.

That limited service probably has more than 100 trains at Waterloo, just one of London's major termini.

Christmas Day was not a public holiday in Scotland until 1958, therefore I would expect a fairly normal timetable there up to that point, though of course the pedants would probably point out this disqualifies them as technically not a ”Christmas Day” to serve.

If I recall correctly, Gatwick Express services ran on Christmas Day somewhere around 90s/00s.

It always amuses me to consider that we would be led to believe there would be a healthy population of non-Christians in this country, a portion of which would be able to fashion some sort of regular service to Gatwick/Heathrow (engineering works aside) considering Christmas Day is one of the busiest days for flights.

The 1965 service has recently appeared on FB:
trains over about 8 hours: on the SW Portsmouth Direct and Farnham had 3 return workings, select suburban routes a bit more. The Central was slightly busier. SE hasn't appeared but from memory suburbans were 2- hourly and Victoria-Ramsgate 1 train each way (! - I presume Charing X-Dover similarly).
(The SE may have been a couple of years later).
Glasgow apart, the remaining Christmas Day services last ran in 1970.

Certainly up to and including 1979 when on Christmas Eve I had a phone call from the Roster Clerk asking if I was available to work on 25th - if it had been my own shift I would already have been rostered and would have worked but due to the short notice I declined the shift somebody else didn't want (and in the end they did find somebody to cover it).

As a follow-up to the above, and to indicate the type of service offered in a previous era, I have recently come across a copy of the LMS restaurant car menu for Christmas Day 1932. Tomato soup, followed by fried sole, then turkey, sausage, baked and boiled potatoes and cabbage, followed by Christmas pudding, mince pies and cheese. Good value at 3/6, though coffee was 4d extra. No unwanted relatives a bonus!!
