Good afternoon everyone!

I couldn't find a thread on this, so I decided why not create one? Hither Green station is currently going through massive works to make it fully step-free. Encompassed is a new footbridge and lifts, together with two new entrance buildings on either side of the tracks serving Springbank and Fernbrook Roads.

For those not familiar with the station, the current station is primarily accessed by two means (in red on the rough map): a stepped entrance from Springbank Road, and a ramp leading from an tunnel crossing under the tracks. This ramp makes the station partially step-free, but only serves platforms 4 (from London, Sevenoaks-bound) and 5 (ex-Dartford, towards London). Given these are on different lines, someone going to and from London (and stations in-between) would need to be strategic as to what trains to take if needing the ramp. The ramp itself is rather steep and pretty uncomfortable to use even as an able-bodied person. Access to the other platforms is continued via two narrow footbridges (blue) which can get very crowded during the evening peak.

Anyway, since moving here in October 2024, I've been able to casually photograph the activity on my way to work. There is loads still to be done - the works not to be completed at least until the Autumn of 2027 - but it looks to be all coming together. I will now just bomb you all with the photos I've taken so far; will attempt to leave some commentary, but appreciate any additional comments or corrections from you lot.

These first photos of mine were taken in January and March 2025 following the clearance of the 'forest' between the two diverging lines at the station, allowing for construction access routes to be established. Looking rather bleak right now.

Things began to ramp up through May and June with the introduction of mobile cranes on the 'forest' and the Springbank Road site, and the rise of the scaffolding for the lift cores on platforms 1 and 2/3. You can also see the works on Springbank and Fernbrook Road's new entrance with the ramming of the steel sheet piles into the ground.

Carrying on, through to August, the foundation is getting laid down for the lift core between platforms 4 and 5.

A lot of the progress up to now has been in this area, so that's what most of the photos up till now will be taken of. Towards October, the lift core frame is assembled for both platform 4/5, 2/3, and Springbank Road (I didn't manage to get a photo of this one). You can also see that the first supports for the footbridge have been constructed.

Then through November and December, the brick cladding quickly rises up to form the lift core for platforms 4/5.
20251030_074246.JPG20251109_173312.JPG20251205_074832.JPG

Those for platform 2/3 and Springbank Road are also beginning to rise up in December, a bit behind from platform 4/5. Construction for platform 6's lift core doesn't look as advanced, but I will take another look in the New Year.

All done for now. Hope you all enjoy these, and I do look forwards to continue photographic these exciting works! :)

By coincidence I was there earlier and a family with a two-seater pushchair got off and openly cited there's no lifts there. Being right next to them I said "they're building some though." They did tongue in cheek reply "They won't be done this afternoon though!"

Are they going to add lifts to the fast plats as well?

Yes they are. You can find this on the proposed platform plan taken from the planning portal, attached here. One core serving 2/3, another serving 1 and Springbank Road.

Shame about ramp and potential quick access to/from P2/3 not being sorted according to that drawing as that would remove a few million extra unnecessary step per year

Great pictures, thank you! I just went through today and was trying to see how its going from the train. These are much better angles.

Oh, I actually didn't notice the disused ramped access to P2/3 until you pointed it out! However, any re-purposing wouldn't happen given new regulations on ramps not exceeding a rise of 2m. From street level to platform level is about 4m in this case. Also just found out that there is signalling equipment is now stored in there, so would be complicated to get rid of. Does anyone know when these were last used?

Thought I would also attach some links for further context:

One of the railway’s largest step-free access projects has started at Hither Green station, where a large footbridge with lifts will link the six platforms for the first time.
The station is built next to a junction on the Southeastern lines. Although it was built as a single station, as it splays out over two railway lines, it looks like it was built as two separate stations side by side. At the moment, the main entrance to the station is via a tunnel that runs under the railway and then up a long, steep slope to the central platforms.

Once in the centre of the station at platforms 4 and 5, to get to the other platforms, people have to choose one of two footbridges, depending on which side they are going to.

After a couple of years of planning work, construction has started on a replacement footbridge with lifts that will replace the old footbridges and two new entrances that will supplement the existing tunnel route.
Because of the size of the footbridge needed to provide step-free access and because it will span six platforms, the project is probably England’s largest railway step-free project.
The sides of the station where the new entrances will be built are now being cleared of vegetation, and signs are up advising locals of parking restrictions on the eastern side of the station while construction works are carried out. Similar road restrictions on the other side of the station will come into effect later this year.

Main construction will start next month, with piling for the new station entrances being installed. The foundations for the new footbridge will go in during the spring, and steelwork installation is expected to start in Autumn 2025.
The new lifts and footbridge are expected to open in Autumn 2027.

Normally, building something this large would require a large building site, but Network Rail already owns the land between the railway tracks, which has been cleared for the construction works. Once finished, the centre of the new footbridge will also partially sit in the depot as a station expansion. The two outer platforms, 1 and 6, will also be widened.

The project is being managed by Network Rail, and BAM Nuttall is delivering the construction work.
Once the new footbridge is open in late 2027, the two old footbridges will be removed.

Ramps can be over 2m for "non accessibility" purposes so it would be good in addition to what they are doing.

When was it last used - don't know but it did get the roof removed by a V1...

(The impact point was by the footpath along the P1 side of the embankment on the corner of Springbank Road, hence all the post war buildings there. The other V1 impact near the station was on Fernbrook Road where the 7 post war bungalows are opposite the end of the P5-P6 footbridge)

Pity they couldn't install new wider accessible underpass rather than the footbridge. It would unite both sides of station better than the current narrow underpass, not just provide access to the platforms. Yes, I know, a lot more engineering involved but such things are being done in other countries. Of course it would require funding from other sources than just Network Rail.

The latest official update is from September:

It was my local station for a few years, it really needs some sprucing up, not just the new footbridge...

I remember the ramps to all platforms being in use in the early 1970s. At that time the ticket office was at the Staplehurst Rd entrance.

I hope the land in the middle is "greened" up a bit after the bridge is built, maybe decorating the approach to the new entrance in that void.

Apologies if I've missed it, but are there plans to put ticket gatelines in with the new entrances?

It must be very expensive to install lifts at a station. Is it the best use of funds to install lifts to fast platforms that trains rarely stop at? Could this not be used to spread the funds out so more stations can be made step free?

Shortlands also received lifts recently

In the case of Hither Green that would be platform 1, considering platform 2 is on the same island with platform 3. And from what it sounds like the lift serving platform 1 is also going to be serving another exit at Springbank Road.

And just because fast line platforms might not see use every day, doesn't mean trains won't stop at those platforms during engineering works (or for other reasons).

Considering the scale of the works, and the fact that lift is needed there to access the street lever adding access to platform 1 is probably pocket change.

And a god send it is during engineering works, OK chances are you end up at Victoria depending on the diversion, but the journey time isn't bad.

I was thinking that.
There's nothing on the plans and they seem quite detailed with seating etc.
AFAIK (apart from the booking clerk) there is only one member of staff on the station - although I have seen two once. (there is a sort of an office on P4, you only see them on a hot summer day when they open the door)
If they did gate all three entrances/exits, they would need more staff, and that wouldn't be cheap.

The new Springbank rd entrance is great for me, but thinking about Fernbrook rd it is slightly out of the way and people would use the natural route walk through the 'meridian' underpass and walk up the ramp of doom, but then again, maybe young mothers with kids in buggies and people with mobility issues would use the new Fernbrook rd entrance. We will wait and see.

Looks like the booking office will survive so I'm told, always baffles me in an Oyster commuter area, like with Grove Park and so on. I'm going off on a tangent. I'll leave it at that.

Very interesting. I would've imagined a station on the mainline with so many platforms and entrances had different staffign requirements to your average 'Southeastern, local suburban station'

It runs itself, doesn't need dispatch. Staff just do the housekeeping so speak like opening and closing things.

These characteristics also apply to many other stations that are staffed 24/7 in the metro area

ie Lewisham, New Cross, Bromley South, Herne Hill, Woolwich Arsenal

so they may not be the only factors in determining the staffing hours of a station.

Having visisted HGR today the lifts are really taking shape. I would also be a bit surprised if they add ticket gates. I don’t think there’s enough space.

Apparently the three day closure this BH weekend not only was to advance the Lewisham re-signalling, but the core footbridge installation at Hither Green is also supposed to have happened. Presumably tomorrow pictures of this can be obtained (or today from anyone who has special access to the station at the moment)

South East London

Work to improve signalling around Lewisham, complete a track renewal and footbridge installation at Hither Green means Charing Cross will be closed for all three days of the Bank Holiday, while Cannon Street is also closed on Sunday only. Trains will be diverted to London Victoria and Blackfriars. Normal service resumes on Tuesday 5 May.
