Now I've got home... I don't tend to have timetables but I do happen to have a copy of the summer 2016 BoS timetable strangely. The frequencies there
  • 1 to Wellsprings (10 mins; 20 mins early morning, early evening) last bus 1850, hourly Sunday daytime
  • 2 to Priorswood (30 mins) last bus 1812
  • 3 to Bishops Hull (30 mins) last bus 1748
  • 4 to Lane Estate (30 mins) last bus 1806
  • 5 to Calder Crescent (30 mins) last bus 1756
  • 6 to Juniper Road (30 mins) last bus 1819
  • 7 to Galmington (30 mins) last bus 1816
  • 9 to Musgrove Park Hospital (15 mins) last bus 1925, hourly Sunday daytime
The B1 was every 30 mins but the Eastern Avenue service was the 73 to Woolavington every 30 mins; I think that had more to do with running Webberbus off the road.
First Bus Somerset reduced the total PVR for Taunton Town services to just 4 earlier this year. They ordered only 4 Yutong E10s to operate those services. Although two buses are allocated to route 1, one of them is often pinched to operate elsewhere, such is the shortage of vehicles here. It happened today and yesterday.

Facebook's Taunton Bus User Group reflects public concern.

I've been told by a couple of operators of their frustration with the heating not working on Wrightbus EVs and the manufacturer's apparent inability to resolve the issue (as well as a lot of other complaints about build quality and aftersales...).
The kernow e400s are frequently no better. Ive had 1degree outside but no heating inside beyond the demister, which is the only driver controlled bit.

But the difference is that it seems to be a universal problem on Wrightbus EVs, with heating simply never having worked and the manufacturer unable to produce a fix.

Haven't we been here with Wright before?

Yes, in the last few years of original Wright bus before the collapse the quality was said to have fallen off a cliff.

But in reality, ADL products are no better.
Ah, sorry, I thought you were meaning something related to heating. But yes, worrying that it looks like it may be happening all over again given the overseas competition.

Same with most of the buses in Wessex land, the E400MMC's are about our only buses that have any warmth (well unless someone decides to open a window!)
You go out, it's cold and wet, and you think "at least the bus ride will warm me up" but no.

I did wonder how Wrightbus was able to compete with Chinese imports - presumably the answer is a reduction in quality or quality assurance.

But you have to wonder what's going on when BYD aftersales support is so much better than Wrightbus. How come can BYD have parts in stock and with the operator the next day while with Wrightbus you can be waiting a very long time?

Anyway, I suppose we'd better get back on-topic...

Wright have always made cheap, awful rattly buses...the Streetlite being one of the worse buses ever made. Yutong buses may have a few annoying issues, like the poorly positioned screens on single decks, but they feel much better made when you sit on one. Streetlites feel like they split apart at any second with all their rattling and cheap parts.

The fact that First continue to support Wright buses is rewarding past and current failures.

I wouldn’t say that they always made terrible vehicles, but they do seem to go through phases of building somewhat terrible vehicles (the Wright Handibus), then quality (the Solar / Eclipse / Gemini family), then terrible (Streetlite) again.

Before they were sent away for scrap, Kernow had some absolute quality Volvo B7s in their fleet. I had the pleasure of one of the SF07 vehicles on a run back from Porthleven to Penzance last year, for a 14 year old vehicle that had fairly recently been refurbished, it flew along making mincemeat of the Cornish hills with very few rattles and no additional clunks.

Sorry but that's not true. The Wright Renown on the B10BLE was a superb machine, and can point you at the Wright Commander or Cadet - both decent products. Even the millennial products were good if not quite as e.g. Eclipse, Pulsar - the real misstep being the B7L but that was more a reflection of First's appalling seat spec and having half the drivetrain in the passenger compartment!

The Streetlite is a product built to a price and with insufficient developmental time. It's not great but there's not much difference between it and an e200 TBH. It's when you compare a Max version to a heavyweight that the difference is really pronounced.

Of the EV single decks I've experienced, best are the Yutongs (by a distance), then the GB Kite. The e200ev is not good and I was really disappointed by the Volvo 7900e - that was terrible.

Any e200 is better tban a streetlite. I also don't rate the Eclipse or Pulsar. Even when high specced by First, they feel cheap and poorly designed.

Agree with you ev ratings though. It will be interesting to see how well Yutongs age.

Clearly not been on First’s examples in Bath then! Mmcs are much better but a Streetlite vs a classic e200? Both rattle like hell and always have done. Recall traveling on a nearly new e200 in Northampton (c.2014) and shocked how bad it was.

The Renown, Commander, Cadet were all really good - no squeaks, well put together and durable, and better than the equivalent ALXs (which were decent machines too).

The required specification for EVs on the Taunton to Minehead route required maximum luggage stowage space to cater for Butlins guests. I do wonder whether Wright Bus were the only manufacturer able to fulfil that requirement. The result is a longer bus but with only 42 seats. West Somerset Railway bridges along the A358 demand a single decker. If only someone would invent a Lodekka....

Or maybe reinvent overhead luggage racks...
Don't think I've seen a bus with those since the demise of the Bristol RE and LH. Provided a lot of extra space

The Somerset GB Kites do have an overhead rack halfway down the bus on the nearside but only one window width wide. Yet to see luggage on it. Perhaps that provision clinched the deal for Wright Bus.

The B10BLEs were a really good piece of kit and I didn't mind the B6BLE (Wright Crusader 2, which First Bristol used to operate on the 20, 51 (and 90?) all now defunct routes) either. In terms of the kit that is around nowadays I am also a fan of the Yutong electric single-deckers (the U11DD double-decks aren't bad either - I had one on a Service 2A from Henleaze to Clifton Triangle on Friday evening); I have yet to sample the GB Kite single-decker electrics and I have never used an ADL Enviro200 EV although from what I have seen on YouTube videos the whine of the engine is very obvious; it will be interesting to see how the E100 EVs and new-style E200EV, of which Bath are getting 17 in total during 2026 I believe, fare although I gather the E100EV which was trialled did quite well. I am not, however, a fan of the older Enviro200 diesels so it will be good to see the back of those but I don't mind the Enviro200 MMC.

I would imagine people with luggage who use the 28 to get to & from Taunton station was also a consideration.

Street[...]e vs. classic Enviro200? No contest: both poor machines IMO.

When I was a pupil of a certain school near Winscombe the 121 was my route home (and, during my 6th Form years, my route to school also: 0830 from Bristol which was a route 120) because it was rather cheaper than the bus laid on by the school. It was usually the domain of Dennis Darts and, later, Pointer Dart SLFs both of which I was quite keen on. The occasional B10BLE was not uncommon either. The 120 & 121 are now, unfortunately, also defunct routes although the Stagecoach Falcon provides a replacement of sorts.

In Bristol I found the ALX200 to be OK too.

And the U2?
To some extent, although the U2 doesn’t serve Winford, Felton, Bristol Airport bus station, Wrington or Winscombe.
You also have the 125 covering the Weston-super-Mare to Wrington section of the former 121.
If I remember correctly, Bakers Dolphin had the contract for a subsidised 121, which First then registered a commercial service over so Bakers lost the route. Then, after a couple of years or so, First withdrew their route.

So assuming here but with the M6 would that indicate GCB will or have brought the 4 Minibuses from First?

Thanks: I had forgotten about the U2 and the 125. There was also a 129 (Weston-s-Mare - Chew Magna) for a time which I think was a college day only service.

Can you read anything into what is missing?

Clearly some ex First services such as the U4 can be covered by existing registrations (i.e. Service 2) but presumably the 'E' suffixes can cover the 17 to Pendeen and T1 between Camborne & Penzance, but I'm not sure there is anything that could be adapted for the T2 to St Ives or 1/1A to Lands End.

There's more details on the Go Cornwall Bus thread which answer some of your queries.

Registrations for any particular operator from a certain date don't always appear all at the same time.

Indeed. More have appeared today, 23rd December, for:

1 (1A), shown on VOSA as Penzance - Sennen Cove
2 (Penzance - Helston)
4, 4A Penzance - St. Just, via. Newbridge
14 (18), shown on VOSA as Truro - Penzance
24 (St. Austell - Fowey)

My thoughts on the above:

- Regarding the 14 & 18: Good to see that the Truro - Penzance link will survive in some form but weren't the T1 and T2 previously known by those route numbers? No mention of St. Ives either but those entries may come later.

- Service 2 by GCB will be more of a TT variation as they already run that route. I think the difference between the 2 and the 3 is that one serves Praa Sands and the other doesn't. It could be that the 2 and 3 are combined for 2bph Penzance - Helston.

- The 17 means that Madron loses its link to Penzance in its present form. My guess for that is either:

a) 4 & 4A to give 2bph between St. Just and Penzance with the 4A via. Madron although I wouldn't have thought 2bph between Penzance and St. Just would be sustainable. As an aside I have always thought that Boscaswell Estate, when I have looked at it on Google Maps, looks quite a tight spot for a terminus and I wonder why they don't do Penzance - Newbridge - Pendeen - Botallack - St. Just instead and use St. Just Bus Station as the terminus: perhaps that will now happen.

or

b) Service 4 to be Penzance - Madron - Newbridge - St. Just - Botallack - Pendeen (Boscaswell Estate), unless they reverse it as per my suggestion above, at 1bph and have the 4A running fast Penzance - Newbridge - St. Just as positioning journeys.

GCB registrations for the following services from 15/02/26 have appeared on bustimes.org
[...]
33 / 33A. Falmouth - Redruth (U2)
GCB currently have a 32 between Falmouth, Tremough and Truro and a 32A between Penryn College and Truro: I wonder if the two will combine to provide a good level of service between Falmouth and Truro or whether the new 33/33A will see off the 32/32A.

I guess we won't see more now until after the festive break but the full details will likely come sometime in January.

Don't read into those termini too literally. These days, the registration can only show one start point and one end point as the specific stop and national identification code have to be stated, whereas it used to be a simple "end point" free text box which would have allowed for something like "Penzance/St Ives".

So the end point of St Ives would be hidden within the timetable and not on the application form.
