are you using desktop or mobile? It doesn’t show on mobile for some reason
I've been using the Desktop version.

I just tried to book for January for same reason, and it won't let me book to Watford Junction.
Oh, just realised the day I am going it is using ECML. Depending on your date could that be the reason?
I'm travelling on the 2nd Feb when it's definitely running.

Are you trying to book seats to Watford Junction? They may be off the platform so not bookable.
We as staff can't get seat reservations on the Sleeper so it'll be a berth which I've booked half a dozen times in the past...

It could be that the availability for the Priv rate berths have sold out on that date you were looking. Especially as doesn't the sleeper normally drop a coach or two during winter

Yes, that may be the case. However even public tickets (i.e no discount) aren't bookable as the service isn't showing up on any journey planner. It's really strange despite all other services being bookable even with Privs.

Apologies this may seem off topic to previous posts...

I've used the Caledonian Sleeper many times before, especially from Edinburgh/Glasgow to Watford Junction as I can connect on to the Southern service to Clapham Junction then onwards South - a much nicer route than having to navigate Euston and the Underground etc.

I'm planning to do the same journey again in early February from Edinburgh to Watford Junction. However the Edinburgh portion doesn't seem to be bookable on the night I want to travel, not even the ticket offices or other TOCs website aren't able to show berth availability. On the Sleepers website, it's still showing plenty of availability but the service is not showing on any fare system.

Now I'm staff so yes I do get a Priv rate fare and the Rail Staff Travel website isn't showing the service at all. Yet, the service (1C11) is showing as running on Real Time Trains on the day I want to travel and I can book the Glasgow portion of that service as well as the Highland Sleeper just not the Edinburgh portion. Any reason for this? I'm aware of the booking window periods and Priv quotas etc but really doesn't make sense, I've done this journey many time before.

It is bookable on TfW, but of course at public prices.
EDIT - I may have misunderstood, it is also back on CS website, I am sure it wasn't there a few days ago.

I wouldn't be surprised if Birmingham International is quietly dropped by the end of next year with citing 'low uptake' as the reason rather than poor timekeeping on the 2 track section between Stetchford & Rugby
Birmingham lost its direct flights to Inverness so they may have spotted a gap in the market. But EasyJet have just announced a twice weekly service so that may put a spanner in the works!

that's not the only market though - I recently had to go from the Central Belt to near Plymouth. Timings-wise, the most feasible (and cost effective) way was: Highland Sleeper -> Crewe (getting kicked off the train at 05:15! seat only - too late in booking a room and didn't see the point in getting a room for a 5 hr journey anyway); Crewe -> Birmingham; Birmingham -> CrossCountry to destination (admittedly I did have 1st class on this leg which helped the comfort somewhat). And then try and look awake for a day of meetings

If I'd made this journey next month, I could have had least stayed on till Birmingham International and had an hour's extra sleep (well, broken sleep!) and still got the same XC train I got from New Street

A first, I think since the days of the BR sleeper, an 11 coach rake came into Inverness this morning and left this afternoon to be stabled in Clayhills Aberdeen.
This was because the Fort William portion stayed on the Inverness set this morning rather than being stuck in Fort William.
Not sure how the West Highland passengers reached their destination!

A video of a 15 rake sleeper leaving Inverness here!

Unusual, but not a first. I witnessed a 12 coach Mk5 formation in September 2022 and is somewhere in the previous pages of this thread.
What I can't quite wrap my head around is how a 73/9 can supply sufficient ETS.

Because the line is blocked at Bowling as they replace a bridge during the Christmas period. So Fort William part will be on the Inverness one till the line reopens

Saw the extra length CS rake sitting in Inverness (it's not even close to filling the length of P2) at lunchtime as I departed on a southbound HST. And have just passed a 66&73 duo light engine at Pitlochry (they appear to be southbound too).

Running as an 11 car at the moment

Services now going via ECML due to Penrith bridge replacement. How common is this?
The ECML route with reversal in Wembley is a well rehearsed diversion for CS, employed whenever there is a planned blockade on the WCML, which is multiple times a year currently.

It appears planned again for week commencing 20 April.

The biggest downside of the ECML routing is the lowlander running as a single portion meaning being kicked off at Edinburgh before 5am

Don't they still split and join the Lowlander at Edinburgh when the WCML diversion is on? Can't you stay in the Edinburgh portion until a reasonable hour?

My recollection of being diverted via the ECML a few years ago is that the Lowlander divided at Edinburgh. I recall thinking that if I'd gone to sleep as the train left Euston and had slept until woken by the steward, I might not have been aware of the diversion at all.

You can stay on board until 08:00, even though the service arrives at 05:24 (Image shows sleeper.scot booking engine search results for Euston to Edinburgh for Sunday 4th January 2026)

Yes, the lowlander does split and join in Edinburgh when running via ECML, usually utilising platforms 7 & 11. This allows the usual boarding and alighting times to be maintained, as stated by @alistairlees above, though obviously would allow Edinburgh passengers to disembark very early if desired.

When running via ECML, Glasgow and Euston departure times are brought forward and highlander arrival into Euston later to cover the additional travel time. All other departure and arrival times are usually maintained.

I asked Caledonian Sleeper about this and they told me northbound you had to vacate on arrival! Hence my earlier post which it seems is incorrect

Does their booking engine know something I don't?

Just checked to see how busy my train is tomorrow, and when you do a mock booking it shows all cabins and seats as sold out.

Switch to Monthly View and it shows

6 JANUARY. Not Operating

Today, they said they would know by 2pm what would be operating on 5th... so not sure what to think about tomorrow! Maybe discouraging any new bookings?

Incidentally, Sleeper is putting people on the 2022 ScotRail from Inverness to Perth to join the sleeper there. And it's a two carriage 158! Hopefully not to busy.

The 6th January 20:45 Inverness to Euston shows as "no service" in the "month view". I think this is because every class of accommodation is closed to new bookings, which is being misleadingly translated as "no service". I'd have to investigate more deeply to properly find out.
