289 had a little crunch on a 1620 York 81 service this evening with a car that decided to ram into the left side of the bus after not noticing the brightly lit up vehicle coming towards it... Car driver not paying attention at all and pulled out into bus lane

I happened to be on it and gave my contact details to driver of the bus should he need a witness.

Didn't seem to be much damage apart from some scrapes and paint chipped off

You'd be surprised how many people don't see a bus or coach

True

It was the fact she (car driver) said "I didn't see you at all - not until it was too late"... Clearly the driver can go to Specsavers because most people including the blind can see a fully lit single decker. Slightly amusing thing was that there as an older Japanese lady on the bus fussing over the bus driver and trying to give hi water

How come EY have ordered more single deck electrics, when it’s more the double deck fleet that’s aging, while only singles is replacing is 284/85 348, 361-366, but doubles you could say 698/705/712-26 and even 08 plates at a push

Deckers cost more and you have less chance of hiding a old single deck on a schools work unlike a DD.

East Yorkshire has announced the trial of service 15 in York on Sundays, linking Bishopthorpe and Foxwood with York, running from 25 January 2026 until Easter:
East Yorkshire Buses is pleased to announce the launch of Service 15 — a brand-new trial Sunday service running from 25 January 2026 until Easter, reinstating Sunday bus links for residents in Woodthorpe, Bishopthorpe, and along Bishopthorpe Road.

This will be the only Sunday service for these communities, which have been without public transport since the previous route was withdrawn during the Covid pandemic.

Responding to Community Needs

The introduction of Service 15 follows growing calls for improved transport connections in York Outer. Local MP Luke Charters recently raised the issue in Parliament, highlighting the lack of Sunday services for Bishopthorpe residents.

He said:

“I’ve been working hard to secure a Sunday bus service for Bish, and I’m delighted to see East Yorkshire Buses responding so quickly to the needs of our community. For too long, residents have been left without a reliable way to get into York on Sundays—whether for work, shopping, worship, or to see family and friends.
This trial is a really positive step, and I urge residents to make full use of it so we can secure a lasting, sustainable Sunday service for the future.”
Cllr Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport at City of York Council, welcomed the new route, noting that residents have long campaigned for the return of a Sunday link.

“Together we can deliver the valued transport links our residents need that better help connect communities.”

Support from the York and North Yorkshire Mayor

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said:

“Time and time again, residents across York and North Yorkshire tell me that the lack of reliable bus services is a huge barrier—whether it’s getting to work, seeing family and friends, or simply going into town. That’s why restoring these vital Sunday links matters so much, especially for rural and suburban communities that risk being cut off.
I want to thank Luke Charters MP for his work in highlighting this gap for the Bishopthorpe community — just one of many rural villages without a Sunday service. This new trial service is a hugely positive step forward, and I’m delighted to see East Yorkshire Buses responding so quickly to local concerns.”

A Partnership Built Around Local Voices

Stuart Fillingham, Commercial Director at East Yorkshire Buses, added:

“This new Sunday service is a great example of what we can achieve when we stay close to the communities we serve. It’s been fantastic working with local stakeholders to bring this service forward and ensure it truly meets community needs.
Service 15 is a commercially funded trial that restores a vital link for local residents and complements our weekday and Saturday services on routes 12 and 14. We’re excited to see how it develops—if people use and support it, we’ll be in a strong position to consider expanding Sunday travel even further.”

I respect EY for trialing this, seeing as there have been attempts for a Sunday service linking these suburbs with York which no longer exist. First trialed a service 500 on Sundays, using Optare Versa EVs, with journeys being free of charge to encourage usage, and later a service 11S. I doubt many will use it from Woodthorpe through to York though, as it's much quicker to change on Tadcaster Road onto the 3 or Coastliner. Any win from this trial would be fantastic, whether this be the 15 continuing past Easter or City of York Council tendering for a Sunday service linking Woodthorpe and Bishopthorpe with York.

There are a total of 27 electric buses coming to Hull and if you add in Stagecoach 82 for the city. Good partnership working with the two local authorities supported by government.

It is a shame that the trial is only for effectively two months. Unless there is extensive marketing and publicising, the locals will not realise it is there and will be withdrawn asap. City of York also should be putting in a contribution however small. Such trials should be for a minimum of six months and arguably a year to gauge all year demand. February and March can be relatively quiet months as far as patronage is concerned.

Agree, when First trialed the 500 (which followed the same route), they offered free travel as an incentive for people to use the service. I believe that City of York Council funded a Sunday service in the form of the 11S. Given EY's unreliability at the moment, I hope this won't impact the service and its ridership numbers. A very reliable source at First told me they are in discussions with the Council regarding improving bus services for Bishopthorpe (as of March 2025, the information isn't publicly disclosed) so something is the works, making me think that EY has tried to jump the gun and get ahead with a commercial service before the Council has made a decision. I think January-March was chosen as past Easter, EY typically operates DalesBus, Moorsbus and the Wolds Explorer 200 so doesn't want to drain resources on a potentially unsuccessful service from services which have higher patronage. A trial this short doesn't give me too much hope though.

On the topic of Woodthorpe, I've used a few of the extra Y12 journeys EY has added (namely the 15:24 from York Station up Tadcaster Road to Tesco, Foxwood & Woodthorpe) and was pleased to see how busy it was, nearly two-thirds full and with no one alighting along Tadcaster Road or at Tesco (bar myself) showing people are using the section that is exclusively served by the Y12, hopefully it will be restored to half-hourly throughout in the near future.

If they are improving the 11 in March 2025 they are running a bit late... having read the article looks like EY have been working with the local MP after his parliamentary speech on the issue and have agreed a trial.

Would imagine they are caveating it as a trial as if does not take off they can withdraw without critisism.

City of York have in the past had a policy decision not to fund public service routes on a Sunday, the 11S was not funded. Hopefully they are rrvereing that with BSIP as they seem to be funding a lot of park and ride esrly and later journeys and all days on the 59 (inc. Sunday).

First & City of York Council were in discussions regarding improving Bishopthorpe services (not necessarily the 11) as of March 2025 according to the reliable source. No start date was agreed, it was purely discussions to improve services (not just on Sundays).

Noticed a Facebook post last night about X98/99 services finishing short and not running to Deighton Bar. One of the councillors for Wetherby said this had been agreed with other councillors but I can’t find anything on either WyMetro or East Yorkshire website to suggest this is a thing. Anyone heard anything?

What a sorry mess, it should be the other way with it finishing in Leeds Bus Station instead of City Square and maybe omit the Ainsty loop as well so everywhere still has a service. People can always change at the bus station or just walk to City Square. Considering this is a WYCA funded service, you'd think they'd know what's going on too but alas, as is usually the case nowadays in this daft country, they don't.

As a future plan, or something that is happening now? Because looking at the tracking for yesterday and today so far, there is not a single bus that has missed out the Deighton Bar loop that was timetabled to serve it (although one of the buses yesterday was sometimes changing from outbound to inbound journey at the bus station so if you don't check the whole day's tracking it might initially look as though they did).

Why omit the Ainsty loop? No other regular services and is a rather long way for someone to walk.

As I say - anecdotal from Facebook.

Perhaps there's a lesson in looking at the evidence before believing what you see on Facebook ... it's easy enough to look at bustimes and see what buses have actually been doing!
But considering this is a forum of enthusiasts, this is part of looking at the evidence, no?

If there is any truth in the Deighton Bar leg of the X98 being dropped hopefully it means the 8 to Knaresborough and Harrogate will be increased back to the hourly service that use to exist to Knaresborough rather than the handful of workings by minibus that exist today. The York and North Yorkshire combined authority have ben given £41m to inprobve bus services and that is one service that sticks out as currently being dreadful. The Knaresborough-Harrogate section once had a half hourly servcie and before that a hourly serrvice which was boosted by an additional half hourly service within the Harrogate conurbation.

Would the current operator (21Transport) be able to facilitate an hourly service on the 8?

The X98/X99 are WYCA funded so any changes presumably won't be happening before the next agreed timetable changes which is 21/22 February 2026.

Very unlikely. They run it as a fill in between school duties. If it got recast I would expect a new tender would be put out and no doubt bids lodged by Connexions, Go-Ahead and Transdev. Noticed today 21 were not using Harrogate bus station, instead stopping on road immediately to the south. Probably the best as the vehicles they use on it are not exactly compatiable with the stand length; you would thing that would be a tender requriement.not

Out of personal experience as somebody who travels with a wheelchair user, I've noticed two things recently:

A) That the drivers are more firm in telling people to clear out of the wheelchair space when one wants to board

B) Even when its kneeling, drivers seem to almost teleport out the cab in order to deploy/unfold the ramp

Has there been a bit of a policy update in this regard?
