The 1147 Leeds to Bradford Interchange via Dewsbury is showing on RTT as ‘This service was cancelled due to the planned train being replaced with a slower train (MS)’ (See attachment). In this context of a local stopping service, what does that mean in reality?

Looks like 158903, which was on the diagram including that train, has been moved to a Leeds - Morecambe service (the rest of that diagram this morning has been cancelled for the same reason).
I've been seeing lots of short forms recently, I wonder if there are some availability issues (not just the 769s)

MS in the Delay Attribution Guide is "Planned underpowered or shortformed service and or vehicle, incl. exam set swaps". RTT focuses on the underpowered in their description of the code for some reason. No unit(s) being available will usually come under this code as there aren't any other fleet causes which aren't for a fleet failure, in this case the short formation is all the vehicles in the formation.

The public facing cancellation reason in Darwin for this service is "more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time".

This is one of several industry codes where RTT have come up with their own interpretation and ignored feedback when corrected by industry professionals. It's a great service but a shame that they don't seem to listen to feedback on these things.

Does it mean the train can't keep to time unless it skips stops? Or possibly that it didn't arrive on the inward journey in time to start the outward one?

This might have been the case in years gone by, but modern stock doesn't usually have these issues. As per the post above, this reason is usually used for cancellations when the booked stock just isn't available.

Or possibly that it didn't arrive on the inward journey in time to start the outward one?
This would be a reactionary 'Y' code, 'YI' which is for delays due to the inward stock for that service arriving late.

158s are the only 90mph 15x units, I suspect the 'correct' use of this would be if Northern subbed a 150 or 156 onto a 90mph working and it couldn't keep time at 75mph.
However 0mph is also slower than 90mph  which seems to be what they're going for.

I think there is a misnomer about that 15mph differential, having had a 142 on a Transpennine service many, many years ago. Whilst the inside of the train resembled one of MTVs Jackass sketches... the key thing, between York and Liverpool, it only lost about nine minutes. On most shorter, short-stopping Northern services, it wouldn't make much if any difference.

You cannot take RTT verbatim for delay or cancellation reasons. It is often incorrect or tries to extrapolate in an incorrect manner. It is better to use Northern's own site or other journey planners linked to Darwin which shows "more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time"

Non-701D short formations will generally all sit under MS coding. RTT is simply wrong in this case because of over-simplification as it is a coding that covers a wide range of causes.

Delay attribution has plenty of nuances so trying to compress the exact meaning into one sentence frequently does not work.
