The longest train journey I have done myself if the Caledonian Sleeper from Euston to Aberdeen a couple of years ago. We had a couple of hours in Aberdeen then went down to London again on East Coast HST

In a couple of months we will be doing the sleeper again from Euston to Inverness which is a tad longer again timewise.

I'm fairly sure this service would be operated by a class 156, and many of the Middlesbrough-Carlisle trains in the past were operated by class 156's.

It's mainly 142s that do Hexham - Middlesbrough then about half 142s/half 156s that do Newcastle - Carlisle. Wouldn't be suprised if at least one of these trains from MBR - CAR and vice versa is a 142.

Did you have a cabin on the sleeper or just seats?

We had a cabin as we will be doing again in October. £60 each is a very good price and just had to be booked

Class 37 : Oban - Rugby behind 37114 (plus 37116 from Crianlarich) on a railtour in 1999.

Class 20 : Blackpool North - Bishops Lydeard behind 20308 + 20311 in 2000.

And I have endured Barrow - Carlisle on a pacer

Longest I've done on one service train is Inverness - Euston sleeper diverted via Manchester, Bescot, Stetchford, Northampton on Saturday night Sunday morning
