Wise words.

When I'm travelling on my own I want an airline seat every time - privacy and being able to stretch my legs out. When in a group of more than two I prefer a table.

So as you say there's a balance to be struck and it would be impossible to meet everyone's view of what that balance should be.
Same here. Our loading gauge doesn't help; with a broader train and broader seats with a decent leg pitch and large drop-down table, every seat becomes a viable table seat.

On LNER's 800/801s there's only two seats for couples in First; everything else is a single or table for four. The Mark IVs have a few more two-tables (including the 1+1 bit in the middle where things cross over). The Hitachi sets have been stymied by a lack of imagination, I think, but I suspect more people will be happier with airlines than full tables, because of who you might end up next to or opposite (and people with laptops are the worst).

I don't think "no tables" is the anathema some people feel it is. We used to run trains where every seat was a table seat and you had to sit facing strangers all the time.
The mid/late 1980s InterCity Mark 3 refurbishment got it about right. A proper mix of tables and airline seats. The only thing I would have been tempted to change would have been first class, to give some single seats.

Is there any significance in the fact that unit 010 is out for second day in a row and that unit 006 has not been seen since it was taken out of service on Wednesday?
Given the aim is to alternate day by day, I'd say so, perhaps just being very cautious.

It looks like 810010 was sadly caught up in [edit: disruption related to] a trackside casualty today, between Kettering and Leicester on 1D31. I was looking through the diagrams to see if it had taken the Melton Mowbray line, but given that it stopped at Market Harborough, I fear it may have been directly involved in the incident itself.

EDIT: although, given that it eventually continued on, it may have been one-behind the unfortunate train involved.

It wasn't involved in any way other than it needing to be diverted.

It travelled via Manton. The reporting at Market Harborough is just an issue on RTT and it didn't call there.

Thanks for the clarification. I know the booked route doesn't change on a diversion, but I thought the logged time at MHR meant it had passed the junction and called.

Embarrassingly cautious ?
It is just as well that only five of the 222s have been "rehomed" so far and the rest are living on borrowed time.
I thought only two 222's have been rehomed (005 and now 001) so far, with one stopped out of traffic (002) and 003 and 004 still in EMR service.

The logged time was a manual report, unfortunately just one of those things that happens in error, especially in disruption. The line code at Kettering North Junction however gives an indication of the route taken.

I note end of the electrified tracks is just after the 95 mile point. Pan down sign just after 90 miles northbound and pan up sign around 93 miles southbound. IS there a restricted zone where pan up must take place or the unit has to continue on diesel?

If anyone wants to discuss their experiences travelling on the EMR 810s, there’s a trip report thread here:

The Power Changeover boards have been sited at locations where there is sufficient overlap, but more importantly, where Driver workload is minimal.
As an example, the Up direction power changeover boards are sited at Kilby Bridge. In the Down direction however, restrictive signals are often encountered at this location, and a risk has been identified of the power changeover being missed due to reacting to the signal, or vice versa. It was thus decided to carry out the power changeover earlier, at Wistow.
Although it is theoretically safe to raise the pan at any speed, the requirement is, in the event of a missed changeover, to wait until the train is next at a stand, and carry the changeover out statically. This must also be reported to control, presumably as more fuel may have been consumed than expected.

The second diagram starts tomorrow (08/12/25) as 810010. 006 still isn't back out meaning the first diagram (the one that's been 810 for the past week) is 222

Also out, I believe for the first time on the MML, is 012 on the Etches Park driver training diagram. Also 09 swopping to 08 in the early afternoon on the Kettering driver training diagram.

Do you know if this second diagram will stay as a 810 all week (assuming no unit faults) or will they swap back to last week's diagram at some point?

Just checked RTT for the various departures and seen that 1D66 (the 1805 service to Nottingham) is scheduled to depart on diesel, whereas it arrives into STP under 1C68 on electric.

Is this an error on RTT or is there a specific reason why it would arrive on electric, only to leave on diesel?

They're both booked 810 so its pot luck as to which diagram it'll drop on. Hopefully we see them both covered with 810s very soon now that we have 810012

i hope it’s an error. I have just booked to take a Meriden to MH and then travel back on 810010 - at least I hoped a few mins of electric before Leicester!

Something being pathed as something on RTT doesn't mean it will be that thing, it just means the timings were worked out on that basis. I can't comment on why it's pathed on diesel, but it doesn't mean it won't run on electric.

What are the chances we get a SO/SU service by the end of January?
810010 was out on Saturday so there is already a Saturday diagram. Yesterday was all 222 but there was engineering meaning there was a reduced service.
