Don't know about why, but I'm just about to get caught up in it (on an already delayed Avanti currently at Stafford)
My train briefly said it was cancelled (maybe to be diverted, I didn't have time to check) and then was uncancelled.
I looked into it (says now fixed on journey check) and then there was a manual announcement (apparently there was also one before Birmingham too)
Everything out of Wigan Wallgate is cancelled, with acceptance on local buses so I might end up on thst

Yes, the route to Preston seems to be running now, but Wigan still not working.
The pubs of Wigan are certainly filling up !

Through services going via Sandbach, Man Picc, Bolton missing out Warrington Bank Quay and Wigan.

A problem with a signalling relay, initially thought to be a problem with the signallers panel like a stuck button, now restored.

I saw the displays say "cancelled" but fortunately it's just North of Preston we're cancelled (train manager has no clue why, control haven't contacted them)

Service to Southport from Wigan just arriving Bolton heading towards Wigan.

Sounds like I'll miss you by just a few minutes then.
RTT and Darwin are still disagreeing about which trains are cancelled, but I'd rather not get the bus if I can avoid it

The 'delayed' 13:14 is still on the boards at Wigan Wallgate
Just got met with a flood of passengers leaving Wigan, presumably from the Southport train
RTT says the 16:21 from Wigan via Atherton is cancelled, but here at the station it isn't
Edit: 16:15 just cancelled (and a loud groan from several people)

Supposedly there's a rail replacement bus about, but it hasn't shown up so I've just gone back to the platform to hope the 16:49 is real, since the RRB would take so long that it's quicker to wait half an hour

A 150 stated to pull into platform 2 and everyone started walking out from the shelter but it stopped at the 2 car reversing marker so I told everyone it's not going anywhere, so everyone (except me, I went to watch it go) went back under the shelter (and then it went back into the sidings)
