I guess any progress is good progress when it comes to the 701s. Thanks for the update: good to have finally hit the 50% mark for the ten car units.
Any progress is good progress ....
I see your point of view, but that does rather reflect the very low expectations nowadays, compared to half the 10 car units by Spring 2020 in the original published franchised delivery schedule.

Just 1650 days late to get half way, I suppose that is some sort of achievement.

agree 100% but for a while some members of this forum questioned whether they’d ever see service with SWR at all

So it is a case of small mercies!

The 701's are now delivering at a fairly regular rate. It's been an average of 9 days between introductions for the latest 15 units.

Considering that a lot of the units have been stored with limited maintenance for a couple of years, 9 days between units is a fairly good rate. A train stored could have a minor water leak, which could do some serious damage by the time it's found, whereas in service that leak would have been picked up on the regular visits to Wimbledon Park before the damage got so far.

Also Wimbledon is also having to maintain the increasingly worn out 455's (and to a certain extent 450's) which are taking more and more maintenance time to keep active. This eats into the manpower you can throw at releasing the 701's into service.

It was only a matter of time, but it seems that print advertising boards are now being installed on the 701s.

One either side of each door, one either side at the ends of each carriage, and several on the toilets.

These were installed a few months ago.

Fair enough, hadn't seen it mentioned here before. Seems to not be consistently installed as there are still some units without them - presumably units that have entered service more recently?

It's a shame they've gone for pretty cheap and nasty snap frames that look like they've just been stuck on.

Apart from being rectangular rather than square they look exactly as the same as on other units - snap frames which are stuck on.

No, no new diagram next week with the plan being two new diagrams in a few weeks time instead.
There are some changes next week though. A pair of 458/4s on a Windsor diagram becomes 701 with a Main Suburban 701 diagram becoming 455 instead. So the number of 455 diagrams increases next week with a reduction in 458/4 diagrams.

Well, that's a surprise - both the increase in 455 diagrams and no new 701 diagrams for a *few* (ie 3 or more) weeks!

Sorry, the plan is still a new 701 diagram the week after next. But then 2 the week after instead of one next week. So 3 new diagrams in 3 weeks, just not 1 a week.

Makes sense. So it will be 2 new diagrams alongside the start of the new timetable

A more integrated "slot in" frame design (such as the ones at either end of each carriage on the 701s, currently used for SWR maps etc, and on the outgoing 455s) would have looked a bit less like an ad board in a pub toilet - and been faster for staff to change advertising.

It just feels like a small detail that has cheapened the overall look of what is quite high quality rolling stock.

To provide some clarity, I’m pretty sure originally the idea was to display adverts on the small screens by the doors. Whether or not this is still planned is unknown so maybe these frame will only be temporary?

We have not had a delivery of a 701 for a while ?.
That was after two per week recently.
Is anything expected and from where (Long Marston, Marchwood or Derby) ?.

Speculation on my part but logic suggests that they concentrate on getting into service the 15 units they currently have in their possession. That is more than enough to complete the 455 retirements and get the lion’s share of the “borrowed” 450s back on longer mainline services.

Makes sense. It'll be interesting to see where all the 450s go as they've never been allocated entirely to the main line. Part of the total 127 ordered was always meant for and allocated to Windsor Lines services.

This is veering OT, but just to answer your question. Back in SWT days there were plans afoot for a number of additional services based around ABDO (automatic braking etc) in the suburban area, which involved new services using both 455 and 450, the latter for new services from the outer suburban area. The whole scheme involved new signalling AFAIR, and the whole thing was pushed in to the long grass in the end, and as a result there was subsequently a small surplus of units, both 455 and 450 at the time.
This was a benefit as it happened, as it permitted certain other modifications to be undertaken on the fleet(s) concerned without (in theory) compromising either planned passenger formations or planned maintenance regimes. At that time, the vast majority of main line services in and out of Waterloo in the peaks had been lengthened as far as possible in relation to the timetable and platform capacity at said station.

Back when there was actually some ambition to improve frequency and infrastructure…

These days it’s as if they want everything to stay the same.

I agree. There does seem to have been a build up of 701s awaiting final acceptance and into service.

There is still a steady stream of 455s departing despite the scrap industry losing capacity (Sims woes).
Which makes me think there must be siding space for more 701s (danger of me being ambitious there !). There certainly will be use for 701s (albeit indirectly via a cascade of 450s and/or 458s)

I still think they will keep both a 2C and 2S diagram as desiros for route retention purposes, yes the 5S and 5C services could be an option, but they result in relevant crew being unproductive.

SWR seem to be particularly extreme in this respect.
There's a full swr retimetable being worked on at the moment. As for when who knows. Getting all the 701s out and bedded in first, finding out their true potential is probably more important.

Yes. Getting the new fleet settled in first is enough ambition for now. Then real useful changes can be made based on the 701s true capabilities (and what other fleets get moved sideways).

The number of not in passenger service 701/0s at the London end has been relatively consistent. There's 3 at Farnham, unallocated shuffles make it hard to say which ones are there currently. That leaves 12 between Clapham and Wimbledon broadly similar to before, 4 have joined the in service pool this month roughly offsetting the arrivals.

Some have an operational use e.g. 701028 for PTI testing and there might be others. There's a few on the SWR network since at least this summer without seeing service including 701004, 701015, 701024 and 701054. The next 701s to arrive have a good chance of jumping most of those into service in my opinion.

Three out of four paths were published for a Marchwood to Wimbledon drag for Tuesday this week. Unclear what happened to the Marchwood to Wimbledon schedule to complete the set that didn't appear for whatever reason (light loco Leicester LIP to Eastleigh Yard, Eastleigh Yard to Marchwood and Wimbledon to Leicester LIP were published).
SWR seem to be particularly extreme in this respect.
SWR don't look to be in a position to make changes yet. Introducing additional services requires more crew when there are already plenty of crew availability related cancellations. The current operating model makes time savings on 701s at peak time disappear far more than any ADBO saving. As more 701s get introduced capacity can be increased at peak times across the network at relatively low cost.

Which main suburban diagram will become 455s instead of 701s? LIkely that one starting 5M03 off Wimbledon?

Is the Windsor diagram that goes from 458/4 to 701 the 2U09 diagram? This diagram used to be 701 until May, and was still shown as 701 in the May-July LTP diagrams, although it was STP to 458/4 in practice.

It is that one.
