Probably not the right thread to post this but is there a reason why Platform 3 at Marsden isn't used much if at all these days? I would have thought that if a stopper from Huddersfield is running late then it could be looped at Platform 3 to late another train pass it instead of having the train behind sit behind it while it calls at every Station to Stalybridge.

Strange you mentioned that but the stopper i was on was platformed there last week the day after the storm, everything was running late, think thats the first time its happened while i have been travelling to Manchester

Something i have noticed a lot of in Sarah Bell's videos is the amount of workers just stood around doing nothing, other than playing with there phones!!

Which reminds me of a (possibly apocryphal) story of a very upper-crust railway company director who demanded to know what the p-way gangs actually did - as every time he went past on a train they were just stood at the side of the track watching!

If everyone did everything they are there to do at the same time don't you think it would be a little chaotic? .

which triggers another memory: I heard a wise clerk-of-works reply to a project manager demanding quicker progress on a job:
"You can only get so many dogs round a bowl!" I have borne it in mind ever since.

More details have been released as to the upgrade of Marsden and Slaithwaite

Facebook post from Councillor Harry Mcarthy

"Great meeting last night discussing the upcoming upgrades to Marsden and Slaithwaite stations.
The plans for Marsden and Slaithwaite involve:
‍♀️‍‍➡️ Installing footbridges with lifts, making the stations accessible for everyone, including those with wheelchairs and pushchairs
Extending platforms so they accomodate longer trains with more seats
️ At Slaithwaite, more parking spaces for commuters
ℹ️ Upgraded lighting, CCTV and improved customer information screens
Faster, more reliable and more frequent train services
While the specifics may change, the government has committed to the TransPennine Route Upgrade, which will bring faster and more reliable train services and make Colne Valley train stations fully accessible.
This is the largest rail infrastructure project in the country, so unfortunately it will take a long time to deliver but we hope a public consultation will begin next year.
We have also worked withSlaithwaite & Marsden Action on Rail Transportt to take up commuters’ complaints regarding rail replacement services and push for a commitment to 2 stopping services per hour."

Of course some of the people 'playing' on their phones may be doing all sorts of necessary tasks like finding out when a delivery is due, logging an asset in the system or checking a design drawing so they can get the measurements correct.

Maybe all site personnel should be told to drop everything and grab the nearest spanner any time a camera comes into view? :D

i do not know current practice, but it used to be a requirement for 1 Machine Controller per Road railer to look after the safe working of each machine plus there may be a Tech Engineer monitoring the various Ballast Depths, Sleeper and rail placement or other Survey work.
While 1 group may be working they may block someone else temporarily.

Yes things do look a bit extravagant with much of the plant looking brand new, stacks of portacabins and spotless overalls.

Returned back to my commute to York recently and impressed by progress.

Piling on the Leeds bound line from cross gates to church Fenton appears to be complete. Minus the stations, which I assume will be completed during the big January closure.
Steelwork is probably around 60%, maybe more on the same line.
The 'smalls' are less, but certainly Church Fenton to Micklefield is further along with some wiring sections in place.
Will check the York bound line next week. Just how it's ended up I've been travelling on that side of train or in dark.

Bridge wise, Crossgates is progressing but hard to see. The cast iron bridge near Thorpe park has been removed and new abutments being constructed. The span is now enclosed in a big tent adjacent for refurbishment. The new bridleway at Nanny Goat Lane is in, with the approach pathways being created. And at Church Fenton, the highway is being surfaces and kerbs are installed. The barriers on the structure are now being installed with all the spans installed.

I read on local news (now can't find it) that the replacement pedestrian footbridge at rose lane has been cancelled.

It will make it a long walk from the houses to the station. The footbridge having to be removed to allow room for the extended loop past Rose Lane.

Just imagine ‘I used to walk to the station now I have to use my car’!

I was in Huddersfield on Tuesday.
they are working on removing the stonework to expose the ends of the last remaining old metal span. Over Fitzwilliam street. And the road is closed underneath.

I’m guessing this span will be lifted out soon.

Over on Bradford Road they are still pouring new concrete pillars to make new abutments. On the south side.

If true than that is very disappointing. So much for a government supposedly commited to Active Travel as part of a green agenda.

Q: Where is the joined-up thinking?
A: Destroyed/forbidden by the Treasury! (Who can't see past the ends of their noses.)

Piling for platform one and associated works have closed the current station car park.

Not just the car park but the footpath too, which was closed in advance due to 'structural issues' which made you think something was falling down! I don't know why but I always thought the lifts & bridge were going to be at the Leeds end so I never put two and two together.

Looking at the map I wonder how many people would have used it at all never mind to walk to the station

I believe the footpath was closed a couple of months ago due to concerns about a supporting wall adjacent to the path but outside of Network rail land.

The wall in question formed part of the station hotel that was destroyed in a fire in the 1930’s.

As for the foundation work, I suppose the station being on a sharp curve maybe decided the footbridge location as the platform extensions are built on the straight alignment towards Soothill overbridge.

To the right within this photo is the wall in question. The tall part of the wall (top right) formed a footbridge direct to the station building from the hotel.

Additionally, the platform 1 works are taking place in the half of the station building footprint and station house demolished in the 1960’s.

I’ve included a couple of historical pictures of the station building, station masters house and hotel.

Although the new platform extensions are good they don’t reach as far as the ones demolished in the 1960’s as seen in the picture below. This is viewed from Soothill overbridge and is looking across the destruction of what was once a busy multi platform station.

Apologise if I’ve gone slightly off topic.

the locals are upset. See https://www.yorkmix.com/residents-f...ng-footbridge-before-new-road-bridge-is-ready
and Network Rail's broken promise
Residents of Rose Lane in Church Fenton are urging Network Rail to halt plans to demolish the existing pedestrian footbridge before a new road bridge, that will replace it, is ready to use.

Network Rail says the “Arrangement is temporary“ It will last from November 21 to December 12. Provision is being made for 999 and delivery vehicles too.
The works form part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), a major infrastructure project designed to modernise and electrify the rail line between Manchester, Leeds and York.

Local residents, who have to cross the Leeds line, say they have been broadly supportive of the project and have cooperated with Network Rail throughout, despite the disruption caused by years of construction in and around the village and directly next to their homes.

However, they say they have now been informed by Network Rail staff that the footbridge, their only pedestrian link over the railway, is scheduled for demolition before the replacement road bridge is open.

This change would temporarily but significantly affect both pedestrian and vehicle access to Rose Lane, they say.
At present, access to the street is maintained via the staffed level crossing and the footbridge. Under the revised sequencing, once the footbridge is removed, all movement in and out of Rose Lane, they claimed, would depend entirely on the level crossing, where waiting times are expected to increase from three to five minutes per train movement.
Given that more than 100 trains pass through the section daily, this would, they argue, create long and unpredictable delays for homeowners, carers, delivery drivers and, most critically, emergency services.
Shaun Sandison, Rose Lane resident told YorkMix: “Removing the bridge before the new one opens will effectively isolate part of the community and create unnecessary risks for elderly and vulnerable residents.”
I'm not surprised they are upset that the new bridge has been abandoned.

East Garforth now has the steelwork up in the station itself. I didn't spot when the piling was done but it was done before this weekend and the steelwork was lying under the footbridge on Friday. I went back this morning and the steelwork is up.

Has there been any progress on the new platforms 4,5&6 at Huddersfield. It’s all gone quiet since the blockade ended

Don't apologise!
That picture brought back memories of travelling on early BR Derby Lightweight dmus from Bradford Exchange to Wakefield Westgate. Down the hill from Drighlington then weave under the LNWR to Dewsbury Central! Happy days!

Latest Sarah Bell video shows lots of activity at Huddersfield station.
Another super video taken on Sat when trains were running.
Anyone know what works happened Yesterday (Sun) when the station and line to Heaton lodge was closed?
Thanks

IIRC the Diggle loop is being decommissioned as part of the upgrade, don't know if it's already beyond use but your description suggests it might be. In which case, an alternative facility will be needed while Standedge is blocked.
Diggle signal box is being closed. I’m presuming the loop and crossover going too. I don‘t know why. There must be more reason that it isn’t being recontrolled from elsewhere.

See:
Quoting from much earlier this year (April).

According to Modern Railways Trackwatch December, the Diggle loop was resignalled to allow turnbacks as part of the works in September. Turnbacks there can use a new crossover at Uppermill.

Traksy says the loop is OOU.

I can't see anything that actually paused there in practice, today a 4Z51 was scheduled to but went straight through on the mainline.
