If someone is going to drop litter somewhere as lovely as that because walking to the nearest bin is just too much effort then they really are the lowest of the low.

So you don't mind people smoking on the Platform as long as they deposit the butt in a bin ?

A little surprise spot-check wouldn't harm anyone. :)

Is that what happens in Krakow ?

They'd be breaking the rules, but I'd rather people smoked at the far end of a platform than directly outside the door (so I guess I like DB's approach), and under no circumstances at all is littering ever acceptable, whether there are bins or not.

Neat swerve on the situation in Krakow :!:

Have you ever been to Crianlarich ? - Just who is going to fine anyone ? Are the staff going to fine themselves ?
"What if people break the law when there is no police officer about?" Who cares? Stations shouldn't be designed to encourage smoking either on or near them. Your pathological obsession with smoking is bizarre.

Agreed, you've just provided the solution.

Seriously astonishing that smoking is still a thing in 2025. Don't think I see it one month to the next.

But yes, absolutely vile behaviour.

You are a bit out of kilter with the people where you reside ?
Why is that relevant? The fact your opinion here is in a minority isn't what makes it bad or easily counterable.

I'm not sure why you are so obsessed with where I live, this is the third time bringing it up now? Bit weird mate...

Because I've been to Krakow which has a far more liberal approach to smoking than the UK unless it has changed fairly recently.

It's a false dichotomy though, when it's totally possible to just ban it in both places - then nobody has to suffer anywhere.

And?

Regarding smoking on platforms, I personally have no issues at all with someone going to the far end of a quiet platform for a cheeky fag, which ultimately harms nobody but themselves. Certainly preferable to immediately outside a station entrance, where the letter of the law is being followed but in practice exposes far more people to unpleasant cigarette smoke.

Arguably it might be reasonable to officially allow smoking at the end of some platforms, but perhaps it's better that it is unofficially 'tolerated' both to allow the relevant authorities more power to enforce these rules against anyone being inconsiderate with their smoking, and to encourage anyone who's going to do it to keep far away from everyone else.

Common sense ?

Are you as vociferous in your objections to smoking there ?
Funnily enough I hate the same thing everywhere. It's a nasty filthy thing, that makes the world less healthy and less clean.

Now what exactly is your point?

My point is I thought you may be a little more tolerant living in an area with more liberal smoking regulations as you would be more used to the exposure ?

I have a weird relationship with smoking. I absolutely love the taste of tobacco and enjoy smoking. However I don't want to become addicted to nicotine. So I smoke (cigars, cigarillos, not cigarettes) but only do so occasionally. I probably go through around 100 cigarillos and a couple of chunkier cigars throughout a year.

I understand why people don't want it indoors or in enclosed spaces, near entrances to stations etc though. Fully agree with the smoking ban etc.

Arguably I wouldn't disagree with designated smoking areas on larger outdoor platforms, towards the end of the platform. Plus for those passengers about to embark on a longer journey it might keep them calm if they can have their last smoke a bit closer to departure.

I see smoking every day still. It's obviously much less common than say 15 years ago when I could first legally buy tobacco. And vaping has basically taken over. But the pub I pass on the way to the station almost always has at least one smoker outside. Any large town or city people will be smoking. Nights out even more so as social smokers come out etc.

But I can't abide by littering, or chucking cigarettes butts down drains, or people extinguishing them on plastic bus shelters etc.

I do my utmost best to avoid exposure, because it's grim.

When I was in Berlin the smoking areas were really annoying, the prime trainspotting locations (ends of platforms) were filled with them.
Would've been tolerable if they just had one end of the platform, but both were given over to them.

Clearly butts has a weird obsession with smoking, given their Username and profile picture and from memory, regular postings about smoking related matters.

Most people don't want to be subjected to your secondhand smoke, so go and do it where you aren't bothering people.

Pure Gold from Benson & Hedges - there is nothing better :E

You have never experienced smoking on a Train, Aeroplane, Bus, Taxi or the Underground - can you conceive what it was like - nirvana !!

Like the far end of an open platform ?

Am I really obsessed with smoking (or the lack of it) probably.

I've been on 20 a day for over 45 years and have not had a day off sick for 38years ( had my tonsils out)

Am I the exception to the rule or is the grim reaper waiting to take me out in one ?

As a general observation I find that fag-ends tend to be discarded in the general vicinity of any bin supplied for the purpose, rather than actually in them.

I was smoking, working, socialising before the smoking ban came in. I never really like the stale smoke smell in parts of my workplace, or the music venues I was going to. I'm pretty sure I'd have disliked it on trains also, given they are just enclosed spaces on wheels.

It's derailing the thread a bit discussing the time before the smoking ban. The ban isn't going away and smoking on trains isn't coming back.

As for smoking on or near the railway, just away from non-smokers is the principle I'd go for. As much as I enjoy a smoke, I don't appreciate walking past a cloud of second hand smoke near the entrance to a building or passageway. Few people still smoke now so the overwhelming majority of people prefer clean air.

Separate smoking areas, in convenient but separate enough places, with cigarette bins. Shouldn't be hard to do at most stations.

Yes. From what I've see while in Japan over the last few weeks I'd be very keen to see that done here.

I'd be very keen to see it done in the majority of UK Airports that don't have any smoking facilities.

For many years, once the snow melted, the post ski season clear up in ski resorts typically revealed thousands of fag butts mostly dropped below ski lifts shortly before the arrival area. This required hundreds of hours work by local volunteers every year for every chairlift just to clear this unnecessary mess.

Eventually more and more ski resorts got fed up and rather than banning smoking they simply banned anyone dropping a cigarette butt anywhere within the ski area except at designated ashtrays mostly placed adjacent to lift arrivals areas. (Some seasonal workers smoke - a lot).

The counter part being smokers could obtain for a very modest price (less than €10) a pocket sealed ashtray which smokers could fill with cigarette butts and ideally take home with them - meaning only their waste bin ends up reeking of cigarettes.

Why cannot the same approach be adopted? Ban anyone dropping a cigarette butt anywhere in a public place in the UK and expect smokers to take their mess home or use a litter bin.
