First train you remember going on

What was the first train you remember going on? In my case it was a Cravens class 105 DMU.

It was on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch. If you don't count that, then it was 1938 Tube stock.

EDIT - actually, I've just checked and it was 1962 stock, not 1938.

A sleeper to Scotland, I seem to remember it was from Kings Cross though could be mistaken. Any sleepers from the Cross around 1989?

First I remember must have been going on an InterCity train to Carlisle to see Family, train taken from Edinburgh (I think), I think it may have been an InterCity 125.

Unlike the next generation 508s aged under 2, I could see out of the window on those. They vanished in the mid 80s.

A mark 2 in 1969 from Swansea to London and back. I don't know what the loco was, I wa sonly 3, but the reason I remember the journey is because I had a boiled egg and toast in the restaurant car!

Travelling to Euston from Rugby just after my sister was born in the Summer of 1969, behind an AC electric of some sort. I remember walking up the ramp at Euston and hearing that indescribable whining noise they used to make. Happy days.

Can't remember the first train I went on, though I recall going into Leeds with parents a few times so probably something like a Pacer.

What I can remember though is the first time I went on a train on my own - a (then) Virgin Voyager with horrific mobile signal from Stafford to Manchester...the first time I'd gone home from uni. I still remember arriving at Manchester wondering what the heck I needed to do next and where I needed to go. That was nearly 4 years ago and I didn't know much about railways back then...oh how things have changed since!!!

For me rather an Regional Railways 150/2 to weymouth or Bristol temple meads from Castle Cary Or an IC/ Great Western HST to Paddington from Cary as well.

First completely by myself an Wessex?/ ATW Class 158 from shrewsbury via Newport/ Westbury to Bruton in '04

Mark one non-corridor stock from Moorgate to Kings Cross via widened lines behind a blue class 31, otherwise Cravens units and Deltics. I also remember those R and COP(?) London Transport units with the flared sides, which seemed a lot noisier and rattlier then any other underground trains and prone to violent arcing which scared me as a child!

My first train journey was overnight from Derby to St. Ives in 1941.

I have this picture of the wartime train, packed tight with soldiers, sailors and airmen. I remember sitting on the floor of the toilet, the only spare space on the train, with Mum opposite me. My Dad who, with his artificial leg, couldn't stand for long periods, sat on the seat. I have the feeling someone took pity on us, for I can vaguely remember the three of us moving into a first class compartment, and of my looking in awe at all the officers in their uniforms.

My aunt met us at St. Ives station in her car. I remember because it had what was called a dickey seat which pulled out at the back for Mum and I to sit in.

Almost certainly a 317 going to either London or Cambridge in 1986. If it was Cambridge, it would have been followed by a 101 for the Royston-Cambridge section. I just remember them in blue and grey. There's a vague chance it might have been a 312. Unfortunately, I just missed the last Deltics by a few years.

A class 310 from Northampton to Euston on the way to see Spurs play Liverpool in 1982 - I was five. And like a previous poster, I remember walking up the ramp at Euston and seeing all the blue electrics sitting at the buffers.

Funnily enough, I remember almost-new Pacers in the old Provincial blue livery on my first family holiday, to the Yorkshire Dales. They were going to Skipton, and used to be called 'Bendy-buses' at the time. I also remember a trip to Appleby on an enormous rake of MkIs, probably with a pair of 31s hauling it. This was the summer of 1986.

Some sort of Southern Region EMU around 1964. I can remember sitting just inside the door and my mum having to stand. (At that age, I guess I was less trouble when sat down )

We used to go up to London on a Saturday and meet my dad "under the clock" at Charing Cross.

Famously, London was half-day closing on a Saturday in those days (unless that was just a tale I was told to stop me pestering to go to the toys department in Selfridges)

I also remember asking (on the Circle Line I assume) why the trains suddenly came out into daylight then back underground. I was told it was because they had run out of Tunnel

I went to the Liverpool-Spurs match at Anfield in 1982 - Liverpool won and clinched the championship - but Spurs scored first (great goal by Hoddle I think) before being rolled over in the 2nd half. I got there by Merseyrail from Southport!
