Hello all. I have been sent 2 emails from Greater Anglia.

Good morning,
We have not received any contact from you; you were previously contacted on ...

At this stage we would like to offer you an opportunity to explain these irregularities on your account, and based on your response the decision will be to either offer you the opportunity to repay any funds relating to these journeys (plus our administration fee), (b) to forward your case to our prosecutions department for processing or (c) or close your case (if sufficient evidence has been provided and proved)
If we do not hear from you within the next 5 working days, your case will be passed over to our Prosecutions team for processing.

Kind regards

Revenue Protection Fraud and Investigations Team

I have been getting the train into London and using the same card for my underground travel as my greater anglia travel.
I have also been what I have found out is 'dougnutting', thinking I could get away with it. I also used a 16/17 railcard to purchase this shorter ticket which I am not eligible for nor did I own (I now own a 16-25 which I am eligible for and have been buying correct tickets ever since the first fraud email sent). However, I have never been caught in person fare evading. I also on occasion buy tickets to the place I am doughnutting to go there genuinely (although the former is more common).
I am a broke student so would appreciate non judgement on my poor form. Have not responded but am growing increasingly concerned due to my dual fare evasion.
Would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks in advance!

If you haven't been stopped, no comment, do not reply. Nothing you say will aid you.

It seems - though it’s not completely clear to me - that you have stopped any form of fare evasion since their first mail. This is important, although I don’t disagree with the previous poster you are now on their radar, and it’s not impossible if you continue that they might look for you at a station that you use regularly.

If they didn't stop you at the time of use then they would find it harder to prove a case against you. It wouldn't be impossible to make a case against you, but it would be a lot more difficult.

Anything you do say may be used against you. Nothing you do say is likely to assist you.

Therefore the only advice really is to exercise your right to remain silent. You can expect them to send a few more increasingly-threatening emails.

Also, it goes without saying, stop doughnutting. It's not a clever wheeze, the railway knows fine well people are doing it and they know fine well which station pairs that people use to do it.

I'm curious and others may answer but if you have not been stopped then why are you in receipt of such emails ?

An automated system has flagged up their ticket purchasing history as suspicious and the TOC are hoping that by sending these emails they’ll scare people enough that they’ll own up to it and pay lots of money despite the TOC not actually having anywhere near enough evidence to take any action.

Greater Anglia seem to be using the same technique as WMR in trawling ticket buying accounts for suspect patterns of ticket purchase, then sending out batches of emails to try to reel the suspects in.

It's perhaps speculation as to what they look for. One possible search is for both 16-17 and 16-25 Railcards being used on the same account. Another is for tickets being puchased for A to B and C to D on the same day when A to D is a common journey. With contactless cards or Oyster, a touch in/out with no matching entrance or exit.

Greater Anglia, and others, conduct data trawls and write out to customers whose transaction history matches certain flags.

I speculate, but these are likely to include repeated purchases of tickets between [common short faring station pairs] and repeated purchases of tickets just before they are scanned on exit at Liverpool Street station.

I would suggest they are also hoping to scare the people doing obvious evasion in to actually paying for their fares too. Even if they don't get compensated for those that have previously been avoided, making sure the evasion stops is also a win for the fare box.
