Trivia: Strangest bus stop names.

There is the Cockit Hat stop in Oxgangs, Edinburgh, which sounds like it should be a pub, but is actually a triangular piece of woodland. The OS was using the name over 100 years ago.

A route near me stops at "King Edward's Sch" (abbreviated from School) but the audio announcement rendered it as "King Edward's Ess See Aitch". It was eventually fixed.

Indeed I remember it as a trolleybus destination, although I never went that far.

Is Summit between Todmorden and Rochdale silly enough? Of course there is a summit tram stop on the idle of man. But only half a point cos its tram not bus.

Summit village, Summit Tunnel on the railway, and it's at the summit of both the canal and the road between the two.

The New Forest Tour has a stop at Sandy Balls Holiday Park. The final run of the day continued here on request, meaning it is actually possible to ask a bus driver "Could I have Sandy Balls please" and not immediately get kicked off.

There used to be a similar case in Guildford where the stop Woodbridge Retail Park was getting abbreviated to "Woodbridge Ret Pk" on some buses, and being announced as "Woodbridge Ret Pee Kay".

An old SMT timetable I have gives the same name to a triangular junction with trees in the middle where the lane from Mellerstain meets the Kelso to Gordon road. NapTAN name is Mellerstain Road End East.

In Shelley near Huddersfield is a stop named "Oddfellows" after the adjacent pub. As far as I know the stop itself is still labelled as Oddfellows, but the pub is now called The Flying Ferret and announced as such on Team Pennine's on board announcements for the D1 Denby Darts route.

Just thought of another one, there’s a stop called Surprise View between Sheffield and Hathersage.

Another in the same area is just called "Access Track"

That's not that uncommon as a pub name/bus stop. We have a couple of them around this neck of the woods

At Caernarfon the next-bus indicator showed an hourly departure to "Australia". This is the name of a pub in Porthmadog (from where ships would set sail to Australia conveying slate from Blaenau Ffestiniog) and the bus stop outside the pub was the main one in Porthmadog. Bemused foreigners were forever asking the drivers where the bus was going as it clearly wasn't Australia!

Is Summit between Todmorden and Rochdale silly enough?

The village is called Summit and the tunnel which runs underneath it is called Summit Tunnel. It's at the summit of the road and the canal from Rochdale to Todmorden. It's also the name of the pub.

The Isle of Man has a few interesting stops, as you'd imagine. We have the Cat With No Tail, as well as a Fairy Bridge and a Fairy Cottage.

In addition to the Dangerous Corners from the Wigan area mentioned earlier, there was a Cunning Corner on the A672 just south of Rishworth; it was in fact a terminus of a service from Halifax pre-deregulation. The pub of that name is now known as the Booth Wood Inn, and the road is currently unserved .

A bit further west, on TLC's 596 above Heptonstall the road flattens out for a short while, with a stop at either end known as Heptonstall Slack Top and Heptonstall Slack Bottom. To spare blushes, the more genteel of the local residents (and drivers) usually referred to the latter as Bottom Slack!

Bustimes.org doesn't show one local example with that name but the bus announcement spells it C O E

You've just reminded me of the terminus stop up above Rishworth on the end of the back road from Booth Wood Inn called 'Commons'. In case anyone wants to visit the Booth Wood Inn, it's about a mile and a half or there abouts from the Commons terminus on the road that buses use to reverse and the road is fairly quiet although with some bends to be aware of. I recently walked it one Saturday lunch time and came across 5 cars in that mile and a half to give you an idea.

Near where I live in St. Leonards there is a stop called Eversfield Hospital. The building is still there, derelict and the hospital must have been closed for over 10 years.
