Berwick Upon Tweed instead of Edinburgh

I have tickets booked from Edinburgh to London and back next week. It being LNER, they're advance tickets (sigh). Unexpectedly, I'm going to be in the countryside a bit closer to Berwick Upon Tweed than Edinburgh that week. My train goes through Berwick and stops there both ways so I was wondering whether I'd cause myself any problems by just going to/from Berwick instead of Edinburgh, given it's all part of the journey I paid for?

Advance tickets are only valid as stated on them. Starting short at Berwick isn't allowed.

What a pain, but it is what it is. What about finishing short? Might be able to get picked up from there and it feels very odd to say you're not allowed to get off a train. Obviously it's not a break of journey because there's no intention to continue on.

Finishing short is not allowed either, but realistically at an ungated station the chance of you having a problem is small, particularly given that internal policy is to allow this where it's not being done to save money.

Although starting/finishing short with an Advance ticket is not strictly in accordance with the rules for Advance tickets, the policy of the Rail industry is that no additional fare should be charged (unless there is clear evidence of intent to try and avoid a higher fare).

I would contact LNER and ask them. A customer focussed organisation would allow this.

Yes I tweeted at them and they said it was no problem as long as it was the same train.

I'd take a screen grab of that in case you are challenged, as that would, presumably, constitute permission from an authorised person (or at least you could reasonably believe it to be so) and would thus be a defence if things were to get nasty.

I think that is appropriate for the return journey on the train but much less for the outward. The chances of anyone wanting to check a ticket on exiting Berwick station are vanishingly remote.

Yep that's what I've done. I'm pretty comfortable now.
