Trivia: Strangest bus stop names.

Goblin Ha in Gifford is a weird one. I think it's actually named after the castle at Yester and that's its nickname.

There is Swiss Cottage in Hull named after a pub of that name now a Papa's Fish And Chip place. A few others of a nautical nature such as Ark Royal and Cumberland raised a few chuckles...

The North York Moors has the delightfully English name of Florence Terrace

There's also a (three bus stops) "Dangerous Corner" in Westleigh (Manchester).

Anyone know why the locality is called that? (Looking at old newspapers it dates back to at least the 1840s. Maybe much longer than that!) Have seen it claimed it was something to do with a coffin that accidentally off the back of a horse-drawn hearse, the occupant of the coffin supposedly then springing back to life!

One that always made me laugh when I lived in London was ‘Dockhead’ in Bermondsey, which when announced on the iBus always sounds like an insult!

Slightly differently. The terminus for route 152 in New Malden was Fountain Roundabout, named after a pub. When that closed, the stop was renamed Police Station. Then the police station closed, so the stop is now again Fountain Roundabout, despite the pub having been demolished.

When LRT ran the 15/15A to Stoneybank there was a fare stage shown on the timetable as Mucklets Avenue (Pylon). The titular structure - now long gone - occupied a central island at the Stoneybank terminus.

There's a "Slag Lane Riding Stables" near Leigh but I don't know how the announcements deal with it.

"White Knobs", a well known locality in Caterham, Surrey.

There was an unofficial stop known locally as "Tips & Bottoms" on a route I used to drive, in East Surrey. Doubt it's used now, the two regulars are long gone. (It referred to local sandpits, nothing rude)

However "Priest & Sow Corner" in Tankerton, Kent, makes me titter. Apparently not named after a former pub either, so the mind boggles!

Swan & Sugarloaf in south Croydon. Named after a local pub which is now a Tesco, sadly, but the bus stop may still carry its name.

It does, and the building still carries the name prominently, so it will probably survive. The Leg of Mutton & Cauliflower in Ashtead, Surrey, is another very old pub name with its associated bus stop.

Arran has 'The String'.

North west of Dunoon, there are stops named 'Sandhaven Phase 1' and 'Sandhaven Phase 2'.

That's the Dangerous Corner at the other side of Wigan, near Wrightington Hospital. Having lived a stone's throw from the one at Westleigh, even I don't know how that one got its name!

There's one in Weymouth named after a pub, "The Famous Old Spa", the famous bit being because everyone knows where it is on Dorchester Road and as such the pub ended up being renamed from just "The Old Spa".

On the slightly tangential subject of destinations. I went to Dunoon and many buses showed “Toward” in their destination blind.

I did make a bad joke that they’re clearly going toward something, are there also buses “away from”

Not a bus, but I once asked the conductor on a Sheffield tram - when approaching the "Halfway" terminus - "Half way to where? And how do I get the rest of the way?
Met with a silent blank stare!!!

Eastern Counties were famous for often just showing "Service" as the destination. But "Toward" is certainly stranger.

My favourite destination in Eastern Counties land was "Hundredfoot Engine", on a very sparse service from Ely.

A little off topic, but on the way up to Dublin from Nenagh the other week, I noticed a road sign just outside of Dublin directing traffic to a place called Kill, I've researched it just now on Bus Times and some of the stops in the village are just called Kill.
