Random question. Does each bus stop have a unique code or are they paired i.e stops on both sides of the road have the same code?

Letter code in England for each stop. Number code in Scotland for each stop. Not sure about Wales.
Each stop (certainly in England) has two unique identifiers. There's the "Naptan" reference which is the random-looking assortment of letters (and you can send in an text message to receive next departures), and there's the "Atco" reference, which is numerical or alphanumeric and is the one seen more on websites and bus company data.

The letters were something to do with how you used to construct a text message on a phone keypad where button 2 was abc 3 was def and so on. The numbers 1 and 0 were not used and a number couldn’t be repeated so you could have 232 but not 223.

Unique code

Indeed.

And likewise within bus stations etc, or where there's a cluster of 2 or more stops together on the same side of the road for different routes / directions - each actual stop will have a unique code.

Even where there's an arrangement (not uncommon in rural areas) where there's a physical bus stop one side of the road that says 'and opposite' (or words to that effect) the 'unmarked' stop on the other side of the road will have its own number and SMS code.

Likewise unmarked stops where there's nothing on either side of the road, and hail and ride points (which in theory should be the middle of each bit of road, or repeated if there's more than X distance between them on the same road.)

Both! Besides every stop having a unique code, many clusters of 2+ stops also have a unique StopAreaCode. For example, Yate Shopping Centre is 017G0001, Billingford Post Office is 290G1225. Most bus stations have one, but whether smaller stop-pairs have one seems to depend on the whims of the local authority.
