Trivia: Strangest bus stop names.

What are the funniest or most unusual or strange bus stop names that you have come across. Any that have an unusual name.

These are the strangest bus stops that i can think of:

"Never Say Die"
(Jaywick, Essex)

"Who'd A Thought It"
(Grafty Green, Kent)

"Hope In The Valley"
(Lewes, Sussex)

"Maize Maze"
(Turners Hill, Sussex)

I would be curious to hear of any other examples. I am sure that there are probably dozens of other strangely named ones out there.

Swan & Sugarloaf in south Croydon. Named after a local pub which is now a Tesco, sadly, but the bus stop may still carry its name.

Sadly, the Titfield Thunderbolt stop near Bath was renamed after the pub of that name closed. However, Norton St Philip has a stop called Chatley Furlong which sounds like a posh character from Midsomer Murders!

Naturally, there are stops in Bell End on the Bromsgrove to Stourbridge service but perhaps we don't want to go down that train of thought!!

Sibson in Leicestershire has bus stops at "Cock Inn"

Carlton also in Leicestershire has stops named "Gate Hangs Well"

Hawick, Roxburghshire has ‘Horse’. This also once appeared on the destination blinds of buses.

The 2011 picture below shows the 'Middle of Nowhere' and 'Back of Beyond' stops along Military Road on the Isle of Wight, served by Southern Vectis' Island Coaster.

'Middle of Nowhere' was later renamed 'Morgans Lane', but was closed at some point between 2021 and 2024. It was located by Atherfield Bay.

'Back of Beyond' is now called 'Ridget Lane'.

Not a bus stop, but destination, "Bonkle" always raised a smile with me. (It's near Wishaw).

Trentbarton 9.1 route has Cumbersome Corner

There's also a (three bus stops) "Dangerous Corner" in Westleigh (Manchester). It looks vaguely threatening on the next stop displays.

The bus stop in Trentham (Stoke on Trent) with NaPTAN code 'stoajgmp' goes under the wonderful title 'adjacent to Man in Space' as in this link to BusTimes. (partial image below)

The bus stop in Harrogate, across the road from the war memorial, used to be known as 'Pier Head' (nowhere near the sea or a river), but is now called the War Memorial stop.

Some of the 555 services coming in to Lancaster have a recorded voice announcing the name of the next stop, and the stop just before Skerton Bridge is named as 'Red Cross', after the inn of the same name which was on the opposite side of the road. It was demolished in 1962.

De-restriction Sign on the Isle of Wight between Shanklin and Ventnor. Believe some databases have the stop renamed, but others still have it.

Hole in the waa' on A7 at Birkenside. Was only made a bus stop in the last decade I think as they realised it made sense to add.

Monkey Island here in Bournemouth.

The other one that's strange is Kilmarnock Road, but that requires some explanation - these are fairly new stops placed on St Swithun's Road and named for a tiny stub of road at the end of Cotlands Road which is labelled on Google Maps as Kilmarnock Road. Only one problem: that's not and has never been called Kilmarnock Road. Before the redevelopment of the area, it was Waverley Road and i can find no indication anyone bothered to change the name of this glorified turning space - I can only assume it's a copyright trap, making this stop quite possibly the only bus stop named after a road that's never existed.

"Dangerous Bend" was the name of a fare stage between Woodenbridge and Arklow on the former twice daily Wicklow-Avoca-Arklow variant of Bus Eireann Route 133.

As Route 133 offered online tickets, it was also one of the possible origins and destinations to choose from a very long drop-down list when buying a ticket online before they moved to a journey planner interface. You could buy a through ticket to "Dangerous Bend" from any point in Ireland where online tickets were offered.

Goblin Ha in Gifford is a weird one. I think it's actually named after the castle at Yester and that's its nickname.

I know of a stop called Cokayne Road in Leicester which always makes me smile!
