I give in.... Train cancelled then reinstated?

My 0003 train from Chorley to Bolton was cancelled when I looked earlier so all set to get the 2303. Now that's been cancelled but the 0003 reinstated - what are the chances of that turning up?

Can anyone reassure me that the 0003 will turn up?

Trying to follow on real-time but this is messing up a night out

My guess is that the 00:03 was initially the one cancelled rather than 23:03 service. But they probably then decided that it would be better to swap them around and cancel the 23:03 and used the train and crew from that to run the 00:03 service. It is much better to cancel the second to last train than to cancel the very last train. If you cancel the second to last train then passengers still have a way to get home by waiting an hour but if you cancel the last train then you could leave passengers stranded or the company would have to arrange last minute rail replacement or taxis. I have seen this happen before where they swapped around a cancelled service to ensure that the last train of the day still ran.

Yes, better to run the last train than not, although notice was given around 1800 that the 0003 was cancelled.
It's a shame that an evening out is spoiled by having to continually check the phone for changes and alterations. I don't think there's any way you can choose a service and then have alerts and notifications r/e that one service?

Chances are that by cancelling the 2303 to run the 0003 would put the Driver & Guard on enforced overtime and therefore requires their agreement.
The cancelled services were probably reversed as soon as the affected crews agreed to it.

"I will give you an extra X hours" normally does the trick in getting staff to work some extra hours to prevent the last train getting cancelled with taxis arranged
