What sort of fares are we talking for this? Is it as pricy as the nightjet?

Maybe the title ought to be changed to remove the "Rumour" bit?

I must have gotten really lucky then with my 62.- 4 berth couchette ticket and 95.- double sleeper ticket. Booked right at 14:00 when the tickets released.

Maybe in the off season and when booking far in advance such prices are still be possible.

Hi, I have checked Malmö-Basel for two passengers in a MUn sleeping car deluxe cabin.

Non-refundable fare for exactly the same train and date (checked at the same time):
sbb.ch -> CHF 623
oebb.ch -> EUR 419

I believe you, but this seems really strange and should technicaly be impossible.

They access the exact same backend. The sbb.ch ticket channel is basically just a front for the ÖBB night train ticketing system.

This price difference might be due to that someone has put something into the shopping basket and the current price bracket is the temporarily sold out. Or naybe just some kind uf bug.

I got the same prices each time when testing myself.

Interesting.

It wouldn't have surprised me because I've seen quite different fares (and even slightly different booking horizons) for the same overnight train with ÖBB and CFR.

But there they are presumably selling in a different way.

I have now tested it 4 times.
Fares are different between oebb.at and sbb.ch.

I assume they are just milking their pricing power in the Swiss market.

This is just not true! SBB are selling the same tickets at the same price. Again, ÖBB is providing the ticketing solution and is issuing all the tickets for this EN service.

Your methodology must be flawed in some way, sorry.

Plesse mention route (if not the entire length), date, comfort level and number of persons. There may be more factors at play. I have no idea which ones, but it would help if we could determine them, based on what you and others are seeing.

I don't have a subscription so I can't read the article, but Tagesanzeiger is reporting that some politicians already want to stop it due to a subsidy of over CHF 100 per ticket.

I've read the article, and politicians are politicians. I think this train will be subsidized because the money is not directly coming from the state's pocket and if not used would just indirectly subsidize air travel. But of course works amazing for a sensational headline and for some right wing propaganda.

This article in the Tagesanzeiger paints a bleak picture. Representatives of 3 Swiss parties have already hinted, that they will vote against this subsidee.

If the funding vote failed, this could become an expensive liability for the official train operator of the Basel-Malmo train: BTE BahnTouristikExpress GmbH of Nürnberg.

Do we know when the vote is?
From 1. till 19. December 2025, but this does not mean we will get a final result on the 19. December, could be earlier. The vote is not going to be "yes or no to night train" but more like do we approve the budget like this. In the end, this means representatives who are against this train might still vote yes because it benefits them in some other way. But this of course depends on how much the other parties are willing to move on other subjects.

Yes, the line item for the night train subsider could be cut from the budget bill. The Swiss parties are negotiating hard about other budget line items, as well.

SP and Greens may relent, if the discussion about the night train subsidee is jeopardizing the timely passage of the budget bill.

Anothet option is that the funding is only agreed on for the first year.

so whats going to happen to tickets already booked?
There's no final decision yet, but if the train is cancelled, normal passenger rights apply, which means a choice of 3 options. See EU regulation 2021/782 article 18.
The contracts of carriage remain in place, as long as passengers don't choose a refund.

So RDC now find themselves in charge of two international night trains from Sweden to continental Europe that are without subsidy.

The Swiss parliament still has to vote (until now it's just a proposal), but it's indeed a likely outcome.

This fact could become an expensive liability for the official train operator Malmö-Basel: BTE BahnTouristikExpress GmbH (Nürnberg, Germany)

Passengers can insist to travel on replacement trains. These tickets must be paid by the aforementioned train opetator.

The signs are bad for the future EN train Basel-Malmö.
The Ständerat (upper chamber of Swiss parliament) has rejected the funding proposal.
Apparently the Nationalrat (lower chamber) will deliberate about the funding proposal this Monday (December 8, 2025). This deliberations have been pushed back in the past.

It's now officially dead, thanks for nothing swiss parliament.
Amazing. Especially when you consider that the Climate Protection Act created the conditions for this. Switzerland's Climate Act (CO2 Act) promotes night trains as a climate-friendly alternative to flying in order to reduce emissions; up to CHF 30 million per year is earmarked for cross-border connections to replace intra-European flights. Parliament (yes, the same one...) has approved CHF 10 million for 2025. The Federal Council intends to maintain this level of subsidy until 2030. It seems that the lying parliamentarians on the far right have persuaded the populist fools in the centre.

Did the Swedish, Danish or German government consider subsidies at all?
