Hi, I’m colourblind on red and green using the Ishihara colour test. If I get to the medical is this a straight fail for the role of conductor Southeastern rail or will they give me another colour eyesight test. Thanks.
If its truly a red and green deficiency then I would believe thats an automatic medical fail, depends of SE have implemented any changes to include a second test, driver side they've been relatively slow to do so.

Thanks, and definitely red and green, can’t see anything.

Hi All, I have applied for a Train Manager role and have nearly completed the OPC online tests. If I get to the next stage at Swindon do you redo all four tests in person.

Hey. Does anyone know what bmi is acceptable to pass?
I read online that the max BMI allowed is 35 so I was expecting to fail my medical for trainee train driver role because my BMI is 38.1. But I passed the medical, they said it was within the acceptable range for a train driver and I had no other medical issues.

No more tests but they have reintroduced group role play/presentation where they assess you.

Hi all,

I recently failed the OPC stage 1 assessment paper tests for ARL. I passed the Group bordon test, the Tea-OC and the DFFT all to enhanced level, however I failed the M7 SJT test.

I felt I put the most logical, safety first and honest answers possible and I also felt I was being true to myself as well. I was just wondering, to anyone that has passed or has failed it and then passed it the next time, it is there anything I could learn/practice to better myself for next time?

Also, on the phone the guy was a bit wishy washy regarding the cooling off period of a year. Is it true that I can still go for enhanced jobs within that year because I passed 3 test to an enhanced level or do I have to wait a year still? Can I also still go for jobs that require the national standard ? Can anyone just clarify and explain that situation, it would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Hi,
it doesn’t matter what test you failed on you will have to wait a year before you can attempt any testing again.

As for what you failed on, the test is designed to gauge your thought processes and weather that is inline with what they are looking for and that is a closely guarded secret!

I passed mine and it felt like a unpressured chat, got prompted about my answers a bit but felt very pretty laid back.
Hi, well done on passing yours. Was this the MMI? If so, were the questions that were suggested to you on the forum the same as what you got asked at your MMI? I have my assessment centre soon and there is a chance the MMI will be on the same day.

Yeah that was my initial reaction/ thoughts but the guy on phone seemed adamant that I could still go for train operators that only require national standard within that cooling off period ie GWR.

On the second one, I called this morning just to check if I had passed the SJT to national standard and the women seems to believe that isn’t a national standard level for the SJT and it’s more company dependent ie ARL might want more than Southeasten etc, and that it’s up to the company to decide if my test that I took previously meets their level.

It’s my first time doing it so a bit new with the process etc… either way it is what it is.. I move on

There isn't a national standard for the SJT, it's an extra test that some companies use

Hi sorry if this has already been raised but, I previously applied with a TOC, passing the Group Bourdon, Trainability for Rules and Procedures Parts 1 & 2, and TEA-Occ at the national standard, but failed at the DMI stage.

I’ve now applied to another TOC with enhanced psychometric pass marks.

I understand I’ll need to retake the tests, but if I fail at the enhanced level, will that count as one of my lives—and would I need to resit the ones I already passed with the previous TOC even though I passed at the national standard if I were to apply with them in the future again?

Regarding Tea-Occ test, on the third part - ‘beeps and directory’, is there much of a gap in between each set of beeps, if so is the length of the gap uniform? eg 5 seconds every time? Or is it randomised? Is there opportunity to blast through the directory, ticking off answers, during said gap?

Also, does time allow to get through all columns of the directory? So expected to complete? Or is it like the dots in that there’s no way anyone would get to the bottom of the sheets with 100% accuracy?

I suppose my questions also apply to the ‘directory only’ part of the test as well.

Evening everyone, got my medical coming up with GWR and I’m wondering if anyone has passed it with a BMI over the maximum recommended limit? I know I’m over 33 but I’m mobile, go to the gym etc… Just wondering how far the doctors discretion stretches as I’d hate to have all my hard work for tests and interviews thrown away.

This was asked earlier on this page, under 35 and it’s a straight pass on the bmi, above 35 and if you don’t have any other issues you are usually good, if you have say high blood pressure and a bmi above 35 you can pretty much say goodbye

I seem to remember it was a uniform gap; it was maybe like 2-3 seconds max. Yes there is opportunity to go through the directory in the breaks, but you should also go through it at the same time as the beeps are happening.

There is, in my opinion, more than enough time to go through the whole directory with accuracy.

The one with no beeps, again, the think there is more than enough time to do the whole thing.

Ok thanks for that, it’s good to know. If it’s possible to get to the bottom of the directory in the allotted time, would you think we’re marked down for any not ticked ? Marked down more for any missed in the sequence, ie a missed one midway then carry on ticking the rest?

How long after doing the online assessment, does it take to hear how you did? For Thameslink and Elizabeth line. Thx

Could you elaborate? For which assessments? What roles?

From what I know you are marked on speed and accuracy, so any errors - false marks or missed marks would count against you.

I had my medical 3 weeks ago and my BMI was 38.1. My BP was around 140/99 but I also suffer from white coat syndrome (Google it) which I told the doctor. I had no other medical issues. He said they were both within the acceptable range and I passed the medical.

I have a questions regarding the Unity practice software. Levels of difficulty compared to the real thing.

Tea-Occ - Are there more tones than those on the real thing and are they closer together? I’ve sat and passed it before (having to redo as they’re soon to expire) I don’t remember it being so difficult. The number of beeps runs right into the 20’s on the software, on the beeps only part. It’s several pairs of symbols to look for on the practice, is the real thing still just one pair of symbols to look for? Will the actual test be the same as the one I did almost 5 years ago or will it likely be a new test, just thinking that Glop, for eg is no more?

ATAVT - is this more difficult on the software? The small level of detail on some of the pics is tiny. A tiny pedestrian in the background for eg. This is the only one I failed first time around so it’s the one I’m most concerned about. Will this test be exactly the same as the one I’ve already sat or will it be a new set of pics? Are they still set in Vienna?

Any help and advice gratefully received. Thanks.

GWR are a bit hit and miss with medicals. When I started as a trainee my BMI was about 37 but I was losing weight at the time (they still gave me a target of weight to lose). They didn't seem bothered by this, though. on the two subsequent medicals I had with them since, they gave me a bit of a hard time (I had put on weight), and even got me back in for one of them (she wanted me to lose weight, but I actually put some on :D). On the flip side, I'd seen people with very clearly higher BMI than me pass entrance medicals for trainee driver posts with GWR since. I think it's literally based on who you see at the time. BMI is a rubbish measure of one's general health anyway.

Yeah I agree with BMI being a bit useless as even with 0% body fat I’d still be over the target of 33 anyway. I’m just hoping everything is healthy enough for me to get through it. So when you say subsequent medicals did they push your start date back at all?

No, they passed me as "fit to drive trains" but had a little moan about too much meat, to few vegetables and too much beer. I've never failed a medical, by subsequent ones, I meant just the other periodic medicals (once every three years until you're 50(?), then it goes to yearly). Also, you'll have an ECG for your pre-employment medical, but only have these at periodic medicals thereafter if you're over 40.

Comparatively, SWR (I've now moved across to them) were a breath of fresh air and weren't bothered in the slightest about BMI.
