There's currently disruption between Newark and Retford due to a broken rail in the Tuxford area appearing to affect Northbound only. It seems like it might be quite a big job considering that disruption is now expected until the end of service. I suspect Joint Live diversions will be in operation very shortly for some services.

A broken rail between Newark Northgate and Retford means that the line towards Retford is blocked. As a result, trains may be delayed by up to 40 minutes, revised or cancelled.

Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Additional information:

Network Rail staff are aware of the issue and are sending a team to site to try and rectify the fault.

Hull Trains customer advice:

You should continue to travel as planned, however, your journey may be delayed.

LNER customer advice:

Due to the severity of today's disruption and the number of cancellations across our route, we're advising customers not to travel.

Tickets for travel on Monday 10 November will be valid for use on Tuesday 11 November.

If you are unable to defer your journey, we have arrangements in place to assist you to complete your journey.

You can use your ticket on the following train companies at no extra cost:

  • Avanti West Coast between London Euston, Manchester and Glasgow Central / Edinburgh
  • TransPennine Express between Manchester, Leeds and York / Newcastle
  • Northern between Carlisle and Newcastle
  • East Midlands Railway (EMR) between London St Pancras, Leicester and Sheffield
  • CrossCountry between Sheffield, Doncaster / Leeds, York and Newcastle / Edinburgh
  • Great Northern and Thameslink between London Kings Cross, Stevenage and Peterborough.
Please be aware that other operators services are also likely to be busy.

Rail replacement transport is being sourced from Newark Northgate to Doncaster in both directions, more information will be provided once this has been confirmed. Please see station staff for assistance.

The broken rail might be Northbound but - presumably partly for crewing reasons - nothing is departing south from York either, indeed they're spinning services back to Edinburgh.

EMR's 2K08 was diverted to Newark Castle to terminate, rather than Newark Northgate because of congestion caused by 1G04 and 1B80. Can't say I've seen that happen before.

I'm guessing broken rails like this get reported by train crews, unless there's some way of detecting them as you'd think the track circuit would still be fine

Yes, usually a report to the signaller of a rough ride or visual defect, then directed via Control for managing the issue.

Keeps a semblance of service going northbound and avoids adding to the saturation of platform occupancy at King's Cross and elsewhere.

Just spent 45 mins at Doncaster without a single LNER service, and two Hull Trains canvellations too. Think there was a bus being arranged to Peterborough, but no sign of any train diversions via Lincoln.

1D08 is diverting via Lincoln,
1W16 has left KGX and will presumably be diverting. Of the other ten 800/1s in service today, one is en route Lincoln to Doncaster empty, two are at KGX (one allocated to 1W20 Aberdeen), one is at Potter's Bar southbound, three are enroute to KGX from Aberdeen and Inverness, one is on 1W02 Leeds-Aberdeen, one is at Newcastle, and one is on 1D08.

There is also a pair of 800/2s on the 1315 Leeds-KGX.

The BBC has reported on this ECML disruption and illustrated it with..er... a picture of a MML train at Sheffield station.

A broken rail on a line in Nottinghamshire is causing "severe delays" to train services.

National Rail confirmed the issue between Newark Northgate and Retford has caused the line to be blocked, leading to delays of up to 60 minutes for some services between Grantham and Nottingham, while others have been revised, cancelled or diverted.

The transport body said staff were aware of the issue and a team was being sent to try and rectify the fault.

It looks a right mess at Kings Cross. All mainline platofrms full and Southbound trains queing on slow/releif lines around Finsbury Park. 1A18 (08:46 from Leeds) has already lost 80 minutes South of Potters Bar!

And equally looks like it is then impacting Moorgate as nothing can get past with where the trains are held now around Finsbury Park

Interestingly, 1S17 (1230 KGX-EDB) has left on time and is an 801/2. That suggests they believe the issue can be fixed in the next hour or so, unless they're just going to spin it back to King's Cross at Newark. 1S18 is also queued up to leave with another 801/2.

Edit: one line working, apparently. 1W16 has not diverted so that would appear to be the plan. 1S09 has also reactivated and is behind 1W16, running 188 late.

1S06 (the 07:30 from King's Cross to Edinburgh) has apparently made it to Retford. I would be surprised if this gets past York before being turned.

Was this the original train that got caught up in the disruption? It's 200 minutes (3 hours 20 mins) late.

1A63 10:29 Bradford to London is sitting in the up fast line at Retford, possibly waiting for 1E82, 1E08 and 1E09 (three separate Edinburgh to Londons all bunched up behind) to pass it on the slows.

Why are none of these continuing south? I thought the issue was on the down line.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

If nothing's going south either, will 1E08 and 1E09 reverse one-by-one to Ranskill crossover and head back up to Doncaster for replacement coaches?

Appears to be one line working on the Up Line between Carlton-on-Trent Loop and Grove Road Crossovers. 1S06 has just done that and is now on P2 at Retford.

1E10 has made it to the back of the queue on the up lines at Retford.

Presumably these are waiting for northbound trains on what is effectively a single-track section for now.

Looks like it may be fixed, 5S08 with 1D07 behind, are continuing North on the North (UP?) line and past the point of single line working.

There won't be any more to join the queue for a while. 1E11 has terminated at Newcastle to be spun back to Scotland, and 1E12 has only just left Darlington.

Now a points failure at Darlington affecting services through there.
Up trains are avoiding the station on the Up Main. Two XCs and a TPE have skipped Darlo so far. Last time this happened they put SSOs in for everything at Northallerton so that Darlo passengers could get off there and go back north.

Edit: but not this time, apparently, as 1V89 goes belting through Northallerton!

EMR services to and from St. Pancras are all reported as full and standing. There are also OLE issues in the Cricklewood area.

why is 1S06 still stationary at doncaster with the queue behind?
At a guess it would be around replacement crew. Given time out of London, would be a London crew, meaning I assume they are needing replacement crew at Doncaster and given the disruption - crew could be anywhere.

Well that's me decided to either fly or coach home for Christmas. Can't rely on ECML/WCML etc for anything important. One thing after another

Though the fact that 1W16 - which doesn't even stop at Doncaster - has been held outside for 25 minutes is a bit odd.

Edit: as I speak it's been dropped into Platform 8. Possibly 1S06 is being terminated and 1W16 is picking up the passengers, though why 1S09 (right behind) couldn't have done that job I don't know.
