It's just been reported by Reuters that there's been another collision of two trains in Slovakia this evening, between Bratislava (the capital) and Pezinok.

Not many details have emerged yet

Nov 9 (Reuters) - Two trains collided in Slovakia on Sunday evening, police said. Local media reported several injured in the collision.

Police said emergency services were headed to the site of the crash, which occurred in the train corridor between the capital Bratislava and Pezinok, 20 km (12.43 miles) northeast.

According to Local media, speculation is that one train ran a red signal.

Services involved were a fast train from Košice and a Regional Express from Nitra, both bound for Bratislava.

The collision of two trains occurred near Pezinok. In one case, it was a train heading from Košice to Bratislava. "We are somewhere near Pezinok. It was a terrible blow. They were already calling out that whoever is a doctor should go to the front of the train," a person who was traveling on the train told aktuality.sk . He added that the conductor asked if anyone had been hurt. "I have no idea what the extent of the damage was, it was a real "bang" when he suddenly braked," the passenger added.

The train collision occurred near Pezinok and was reported at 7:31 p.m.
The accident caused a disruption in traffic on the Pezinok-Svätý Jur section, but railway traffic has now been restored.
The trains Tatran 620 and Rex 1814 collided.
According to the head of ŽSR, one of the trains probably ran a red light .

The impression I've got is that they are replacing existing signalling with ETCS rather than using it as an overlay.

ETCS is in the process of being introduced and not all stock is currently fitted. The loco involved is reported to be 350006 which is fitted.

To expand on post #7.
1, the REx from Nitra was formed of a modern 861 DMU. This is booked to be overtaken by Ex620 at Trnava. For whatever reason (presumably late running of the Ex, not exactly unusal) it was looped at its booked stop at Pezinok for the Ex, but started prematurely (photos show it back on the main line) and was run into by the Ex.
2. Apparently ETCS is not a requirement on stock with a maximum of 120km/h (or less) so the unit was not fitted/retrofitted, and whatever safety systems it has can be overridden (like AWS).
