Railway Memorabilia/Items to move on

Hello all,

I have a number of items in need of getting rid of after the passing of a family member.

I am in possession of many railway books from Steam to present.

Signed picture frames

Photographs of various traction and rolling stock

Hats, Ties and jumpers from numerous TOCs through the 90s

Ticket clippers and some sort of ticket stamps

And many other types of collections. To many it may be nothing or worth much as holds little to no value, however Im not in a position to throw away or donate to a charity shop as I want them to go to good use and a railway home as they have been in for many years.

Advice I am looking for is what avenues can I go down to move on these items instead of donating them to the council tip. I am more than happy take pictures and discuss items privately if need be.

Books are pretty much worthless. Every Heritage Railway is awash with second hand books.

GWRA are a bit specialist. Whilst GCRA do have the usual auctions with nameplates, totems etc they also have their general auctions that cater for smaller value lots.

I second this, give them a bell.
I am unsure if they will appraise them, as I say, call them or email them.
You might have a hidden gem, and I think the clothing will definitely bring interest.

I suggest that you have a look at the catalogues from recent auctions mentioned here, to see which auction houses sell similar items.

I would have thought any heritage railway would be grateful for any donations.

The bottom has fallen out of the market for old books and magazines, with supply in excess of demand. Old books and magazines take up a lot of storage space, for a lot of heritage railways this is now more trouble than it is worth.

As a historical researcher, what bothers me about situations like this is the possible loss of information, from records and photographs, on railway operation in years gone by. This may not be of much monetary value but it is better if it ends up in an archive than in a skip.
