Hi,

Was supposed to be travelling GLC to Leeds today via WCML. Instead I travelled via the ECML. Train has been stopped 5 miles North of York and is being turned back to Darlington.

Anyone know what's happened, is there any prospect of getting to York and onwards to Leeds in next few hours or should I be planning on heading back to Glasgow?

LNER and Xc look to be spinning sets at York to head back south.

I presume you're on 1E22, I'm not sure where it's going to go when it arrives at Northallerton because 1E23 is in the northbound platform there ... unless that's going back to Darlington, in which case all the platforms will be full there as well.

Edit: looks like they're spinning trains at Darlo as well. I presume some road transport is being sought between Darlo/Northallerton and York. There are still 3 other southbound services stuck between Northallerton and Thirsk.

E23 looks like it's signalled onto the like towards Yarm strangley.

The 1448 Lumo Kings Cross to Edinburgh was already 155 down at York thanks to the issues earlier around Welwyn. And is now stuck going further north.

Never rains, but it pours

It's not going to get very far that way, it's an 801...
I know......looks like a glitch on maps. It's now showing on the up main north of Northallerton.

Edit 1943 looks like GC is going to head back north, and the 1E23 can drop back onto platform 1.

Buses being arranged at Darlington. Everything being turned around. Lots more people than buses obviously!

Thank you. Need to decide whether to try and press on to York then Leeds, or chuck it and go home....

I was wondering why it was going bang road to Darlo, especially when there are no platforms free there. Makes sense.

XC 1V70 has just passed Skelton Junction and is now approaching York (according to maps).

And LNER 1S23 has just departed heading north.

Is it actually a 5 car? Or just a set swap at Edinburgh?
803002 is on the 1448 Kings Cross to Edinburgh (stuck at York at present) so definitely just a set swap.

And then sat there for around ten minutes but is on the move agin with the road given into York.
And LNER 1S23 has just departed heading north.
And has been sat south of Skelton junction ever since!

Not looking good tonight for York at all.

I would hazard a guess that Emergency Special working has been implemented.

Looking like they've implemented something but must be extremely limited. 1E86 has now made it through but is sitting just south of Skelton junction. 1S23 hasn't moved yet...

Edit: It has just moved as I posted this! 1S23 has moved! It's a modern miracle

At one point it was in two places at once so suffice to say the signalling is still not behaving the way it should be...

That's because emergency spexial
Working is in place.
The driver will be told to pass the first signal at danger and continue past multiple signals, then from x single stop, notify signaller then proceed as normal from that point.
Signal maps will not show correct position of train until it passes the next workable signal.

Meanwhile the 14.48 Lumo service from King's Cross (1S97) is stuck at Skelton Jn and is a mere 5 hours and 10 minutes (and counting!).

To the ignorant mind ESW seems painfully slow....
It's a safe method of work.
The driver stops. And will be instructed by the signal which signal to pass at danger, and to then proceed passing multiple signals (all signal numbers need to be read out), they need to be told which signal to stop at and contact signaller, who will then authorise them to proceed and obey all future signal aspects.
Driver needs to repeat what they have just been instructed to do, to ensure a full clear understanding of the signallers instructions.
The train is also limited to a low speed (50mph I believe).
It takes time, but you don't not rush safety.

It isn't stuck, it is currently making its way through the ESR section.

Interestingly I'm now in York via a 75min bus journey, the screens here show trains departing to Edinburgh but nothing shows on the LNER website...

Lines have now reopened as of 22:16:

Lines have now reopened following a fault with the signalling system north of York station. Due to the duration the lines were closed, trains between York and Knaresborough / Darlington will be severely delayed by up to 130 minutes, cancelled or revised.

Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.
