Now services being delayed again, this time at York with 'major' signalling issues at Skelton Junction affecting all lines.
Not a good day for ECML.

Edit 1923 looks like LNER 1E22 is returning north, possibly to be platformed at Thirsk.

Quite incredibly, there is not one single down GTR service between London and Cambridge at this moment, and only two between London and Peterborough. Realise there’s been events beyond the industry’s control, but once again a near total evaporation of the GN outer-suburban service.

Looks like my 60 mins delay with IT42 (1512 Kings Cross to Kings Lynn, took the scenic route via Hertford, all stops between Letchworth and Cambridge, cancelled Cambridge due to disorder*) got off lightly in comparison to most of the rest of the afternoon and evening. Swapped to a Kings Lynn shuttle service at Cambridge to arrive 1723, rather than 1623. The 1442 arrived King's Lynn 157 mins late!
*Disorder being elsewhere rather than Cambridge.

I was extremely lucky and got a seat on what I think was the late running 1627 from Kings Cross to Welwyn North. From what I can see it was the only train stopping at Welwyn North or Knebworth for the next three hours or so. I felt bad for the throngs left on the platform at Finsbury Park. The driver said “please step away from the doors so another service can come in” but it doesn’t sound like much was coming.

Anyway it was a reminder that sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don’t, with these things

I was on the 1442 service from Kings Cross to Kings Lynn. It stopped at Hatfield for a very long time. Credit due to the driver who kept as informed with what little information he was getting and also got permission to open the doors. Fortunately the train was not very full. What I am wondering is why after we got off the ECML and onto the Cambridge branch did we continue to lose time? Not complaining, just curious.

You lost 9 minutes between Hitchin and Cambridge, but then lost 15 minutes sat at Littleport presumably waiting for the up from from Kings Lynn to clear the single line north.

Even though the problems were to the north, all Welwyn stoppers were cancelled, and with main line trains on the loop only the half-hourly 2Fxx Stevenage via Hertfords were running. Moorgate had the platforms blocked off because of overcrowding.

I imagine that the heightened anxiety about rail incidents of late will not help regarding what some passengers choose to do when heavy delays occur.
