I wonder how many people who quite rightly object to the tagging of tube trains are OK with thugs painting roundabouts and other public property.

Can't have it both ways.

I was pretty shocked.by the state of the Thameslink train I travelled on earlier this year. The inside of the train was covered in graffiti. The toilet was disgraceful - graffiti and vandalism.

Change in society? Fewer staff on trains? Little punishment for the crime? I don't know, but it makes travelling on such vehicles feel 'uncomfortable' - adding to a feeling of potential criminality and threats to personal safety.

Both are wrong. Mindless, selfish vandalism. People think they have the 'right' to do it. A sense of entitlement and lack of respect for their fellow citizens. Ramp up the punishment for all of it.

The people causing the damage know that the chances of being caught or even challenged are almost non existent.

Thameslink loos were being vandalised and graffitied before delivery I think… never seen one as the designer may have envisioned it. I certainly think with no guard there’s absolutely no sense of risk you may be caught.

Would a guard on board really make much of a difference to graffiti in train toilets? It can be very discreetly done.

I don’t think it would stop it, but the perceived chance of being caught (even if actually no higher than without a guard) would put off graffiti artists who are bored teenagers after a thrill, rather than the apparent professional middle aged taggers mentioned above.

It doesn't help that the drab livery and interior design of the 700s is like a blank canvas for vandals. There's a theory known as crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) which suggests that reducing attractive targets for vandals and improving the general aesthetics of an area can help reduce vandalism as a whole.

Wrapping the toilets with vinyl of something like locations along the line that is then given an anti-graffiti laminate for ease of cleaning might be a good start.

Bizarre they haven’t been wrapped yet with a design.

Thing is the vast majority of it is a handful of people. I suspect 10-30 people are responsible for the vast majority of it. It's a huge failing of the BTP to not arrest these 10 people; they know who they are (most of them have been to prison before for it).

Maybe Thameslink need to bring back those really annoying Virgin Trains toilet announcements, as they would be enough to put most people off from spending any longer in the toilets than necessary...

Totally agree. It is a very select group of people with the same tags everywhere which many have already been done for previously. No idea why BTP have not got to grips with it

Unless you catch them at it then you can't prove it is them. "Someone copied my tag."

Certainly. And I know there's always limited resources. I do think however given the huge costs and damage caused by these people, permenent in some cases, along with affecting things like the feeling of safety of passengers and staff moral, it would be worth persuing them harder. 10Foot was doing an exhibition on Picadilly Circus which featured a grafittied tube train for goodness sake!

And if you want some evidence of him doing this stuff here you go

I was on the Bakerloo line yesterday and the train had been tagged so much that you could not see out of the windows of the carriage that I was in! Inside wasn't much better either tbh.

Your comments about the interior are concerning, the last few Bakerloo trains I've been on have been fine inside, the clean-up over the last few months seems to have worked, I hope we're not seeing the start of the graffiti returning.

that's a theory that I find to have a lot of merit. In my country the Hyundai Rotem E32000's used in Marmaray usually have their exteriors full of graffiti. However, because the trains are normally completely devoid of any colour besides grey (they did have more colorful livery when it first opened but they got rid of it because of reasons) the graffiti doesn't look bad and the trains do seem more a part of the city with it. I can publish photos but I don't want to derail the topic

Because BTP are a joke of a "police" force with little or no enforcement action.

And because train companies and TfL don't want to secure the depots concerned due to it costing so much to do so.

credit where it’s due, there’s been a massive improvement in the Central Line interiors in the last month or so.

I agree, I used the Central Line on Saturday for the first time in a couple of months and was surprised to see how little graffiti there was in comparison.

Externally, there is still a lot though.

It’s getting there just makes you wonder why the big slip in cleaning took place in the first place on both the Bakerloo & Central . TFL have never given a credible response to this.

I also saw many tags left for days/weeks so was definitely against TFL official policy. The mind boggles but judging by the shambolic Central line refurbishment I just don’t think the current management are fit for purpose

After being in Singapore and Hong Kong for a while, it was certainly a shock to have to use the London Underground again. Dirty, scruffy, run-down hole. Pity we have no pride here.

Completely this. A few months back someone attacked me quite forcefully on this threat saying that so many hundreds of tags were being removed every week, but they clearly weren’t and had been there for months or not had a proper attempt at cleaning them so ended up still there but with this horrible smear. After the clean ups of the Bakerloo and Central, maybe we can turn our attention to the Thameslink loos next

I would argue that the fact that people are now saying the situation has got noticeably better is proof that what they said was true. Situations like this don't disappear overnight, clearly for whatever reason (Frequency of it being cleaned decreasing, or frequency of tagging increasing) the taggers were overwhelming the cleaning. That has clearly now reversed and they are back to being able to remove it quicker than it is done, but for there to now be such a notifiable difference there has to have been a long period of it slowly getting better.

I think the pressure from many directions and social media has successfully escalated this up the Tfl management awareness and action list.
