TVMs fitted with both Oyster and ITSO readers

Until yesterday all the Ticket Vending Machines I've seen that can interact with smartcards have either an Oyster reader or an ITSO reader, not both.

Passed through Clapham Junction and spotted a bunch with both, though the ITSO readers were all inactive. Thoughts?

Validating tickets / PAYG / etc at a gateline and retailing those products are two separate things. To my knowledge TVM ITSO readers can't do anything with Oyster cards and TVM Oyster readers can't do anything with ITSO cards besides display limited information (if that).

I've seen those as well; within the zones they're a rarity. I can only assume there is a technical reason for the lack of dual-capability, and I can't remember the last time I've seen someone buy an ITSO-fulfilled ticket from a TVM.

The Chiltern TVMs at Marylebone, Wembley Stadium, Northolt Park, South Ruislip and West Ruislip (and possibly LNER TVMs at Kings Cross) all handle both ITSO and Oyster. The remaining Chiltern machines have a blanking plate over the hole in the casing where the Pearl (Oyster reader) would be fitted.

Interesting. So it can be done after all (if the relevant TOC / DfT believe it is to their commercial advantage).

Thanks for the reminder, I knew those particular Oyster readers had a name but couldn't remember what it was.

Are all the TVM Oyster readers labelled Pearl / Pearl 2 or is it just the bulky models fitted to the Scheidt & Bachmann TVMs?

I am sure that they do not handle Oyster.

They don't LNER are not part of Oyster or cPay. Although the Arrive TVMs are capable and Northern's had to go through Oyster accreditation for the PRT roll out.

SWR yellow smartcard readers on gatelines in zones 1-6 can read Oyster, contactless bank cards and ITSO smartcards. From that I would assume that all their TVMs in zones 1-6 can read Oyster and ITSO smartcards, using the yellow Clapham Junction reader illustrated by the OP. I don't know what the plain black reader is for.

Wasn't sure, given Kings Cross is in Zone 1. Thanks for the clarification.

It's been a while since I visited a Chiltern station that's not on the Met so upon entering Marylebone I was surprised to see Arrive (Flowbird) TVMs inside.

Sure enough, both smartcard readers work though the ITSO readers I tried out only successfully read my card half the time (if that).

BTW, what's the purpose of the barcode reader near the bottom-right corner of the touchscreen?

Read that and initially thought it was a typo for Arriva!

The barcode reader isn’t currently used but may well be in the future
