Good to see the news on the other 2 visiting locos for the Gala next month. With Ivatt 41313 and Standard 4 80078 (will be renumbered to former Whitby loco 80119) coming to the railway. This on top of the other 2 visiting locos Standard 2mt 78019 and Battle of Britain Class 34072 257 Squadron. Looking forward to seeing a Standard 4 double header. Also seeing the 9f back in action after the prolonged Maintenance. Interesting to see the Q6 wont be back in time to operate.
The 9F made a fleeting appearance at back end of last week when it briefly visited platform 4 at Grosmont.

I was just thinking about this the other day, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it was one of their steam engines. Hopefully not however.

Apparently the fire has been getting quite close to raf flyingdales and closing roads, but I’m not sure if it will affect the traffic to the NYMR for the foreseeable
The fire started nowhere near the railway. They are suspending steam so they don't start another one and deplete resources.

The area the NYMR need to be careful about is Fen Bog, which is a nationally important site for adders, butterflies, mosses, and several ground-nesting birds including stonechats, curlews, and capercaillies (the latter two of which are on the red endangered list)

Black Grouse. Capercaillie don't sign south of the border.

I cannot believe my luck that 80078 will be renumbered to 80119. I specifically bought that loco in N for my Guisborough Station project as that loco used to run to and from Guisborough when it was a Whitby based engine. What are the chances!

9f was on a steam test just before they pulled steam services because of the moors fire.
Tornado is back in action today alongside fleet of diesels

NYMR will also be affected by access difficulties due to the fire, especially from the Whitby to Scarborough Road which is closed.

A friend has a caravan on a permanent site off the road and whilst he is currently overseas they have been advised the site can't be accessed.

Unfortunately its not an area I'd consider visiting at the moment.

The local news tonight reported that the fire is now under control. This, combined with the exoected heavy rain, is very good news for the area.

not yet out - i have some friends up that way and they have been really imapcted by this fire. They said it was the worst one for years. Luckily for us it wasn't caused by the NYMR but I think they have done the right thing in trying to help the stretched fire services by not adding to thier burden.

In any event: unexpected 37 in haulage area!

I saw it when I was at NYMR - it chuffed into the station and then back to the shed

Seems that the up coming gala is a BR 1950/60's themed event with 8 locos and all coaching stock in appropriate liveries

That sounds like a nice event!

I’ve just booked on the Flying Scotsman in November. They’re running just FS on the NYMR itself starting at Grosmont, running non-stop to Pickering. A separate NYMR shuttle is operating between Grosmont and Whitby only. Seems like a good day out for the price considering you get a long, scenic ride on FS, a trip to Whitby and a catering voucher too :)

I’ve just seen Repton and tender heading Northwards on the A1 on a low-loader presumably heading back to the NYMR.

It was my first visit to the NYMR railway last Saturday, and it's fair to say I didn't leave the line disappointed  .

The double header train with the BR standard 2mt and the Ivatt 2mt was a highlight for me, it sounded excellent along the valley, and the scenery was certainly great from the train.

The Whitby section was certainly interesting, and I am with those who wish that the Grosmont to Whitby section was redoubled and separated so that the NYMR can run more steam/Diesel services along to Whitby.

I suppose the blessing/curse of the limited Northern rail service along the Esk valley meant that when i saw the 9F at Grosmont in the morning it was atmospheric watching the 9f stationary amongst the mist.

Whilst I am more of a steam enthusiast, one thing that surprised me was how the first-gen DMU's are in a bit of a poor state currently. You would think it would be a rolling stock priority to get these restored and operational for steam bans and for running out to Whitby.

There is a plan to restore/overhaul the three car set. I believe one of the driving car is already away for work. I don't think there are any plans (from the NYMR) for grotty 2 car set.

When the Flying Scotsman visits from the end of October, a NYMR Whitby-Grosmont shuttle is also running, does anyone know whether this is likely to be steam or diesel please?

Okay, that is encouraging then. I think another thing that would be great for the line is if they could convince Hosking to send up the LNER Coronation observation coach from Margate. The views from the coach would be spectacular and would generate extra revenue for the railway.

The grotty 2 car set is considered beyond restoration - having been dumped rotting in a siding for years - and robbed of parts to keep the 3 car unit in traffic. It is said to have been sold to someone who plans to turn them into glamping accommodation. It has been moved to Pickering - presumably to await the low loaders.
As I understand it - Class 101 units are not likely to be re-registered for use on the National Network - not crash worthy enough for current standards ??
The two driving cars of the 3 car set are privately owned - and one IS away for overhaul.

The logic for its mainline ban does check out which is a shame, as I can see them being appropriate for the Grosmont to Whitby section. Glad to hear the 2-car won't be outright scrapped, but unfortunately, as you say, it's beyond restoration.

A 3-car set would be perfect for the NYMR, and I can imagine dibs on the seat behind the driver's cab would be hotly contested .

NYMR visitors leaving cars in stupid places caused a nuisance in Grosmont recently:
BBC News - Illegal parking 'gridlocks' Grosmont during event -

The affected buses were on the 21Transport route 96 (Whitby to Lealholm)

As much as the motorists are responsible, the NYMR must also take responsibility for a very poorly managed series of events. Grosmont does not have the capacity, infrastructure, public transport or hotels that Pickering does, so focusing Flying Scotsman trains from there was always a poor idea.

One of the many reasons why rail enthusiasts get bad reputation
There’s no evidence they were rail enthusiasts. They could easily have been locals whose usual legitimate parking spots were taken by rail enthusiasts.

Possibly. But given that the train will run to Grosmont anyway, people will still drive there to see it.

I suspect that a lot of the issue is, as usual, tightwad entitled car drivers not wanting to pay to use the very large National Park car park adjacent to the station, but instead parking on the main road: the road is always jammed with parked cars even when there are lots of spaces in the car park.

Yeah it's locals but if railways involved certain news outlets portray it as us,for example people trespassing on the ECML all those years ago was just the general public

I believe the capacity of that car park is 100 cars, with a further 40 spaces in the station car park. At 4 people per car (almost certainly an over-estimate), that's 580 people. O believe the Flying Scotsman services run at 8 carriages. Assuming 7 TSOs and a brake, that's 480 seats per working. With two round trip loads (one returning, one departing), that implies a shortfall of 100 parking spaces if everyone came by car. And then there are staff & volunteers, plus on some days those associated with the diner.

I'm sure there are some tightwads who insist on street parking, but I very much doubt that's the whole story.
