Going from Dalston to Windsor via South Western. It gives me the option to purchase one complete ticket for the whole journey. Will that be valid on the Overground for the first leg to Richmond? - never heard of someone using a paper ticket and travelling on the overground.

Ah, that's because of the way TfL brands it. But yes, you absolutely can buy a paper ticket and use it on London Overground. It is part of the National Rail network.

And, for completeness, it is worth mentioning that you can generally also buy a through ticket if your journey starts on the Underground - although it will likely have to be a paper ticket.

There are ticket machines at every London Overground station that will spew out paper tickets on demand!
