Of course Deltics did regularly run to Grimsby and Cleethorpes towards THE END, though by then the East Lincs had long gone and they traversed Midland metals via Newark and Lincoln.
Immingham had 70035-041, though I've read that the London turns were mainly worked by 70038-041.I seem to remember seeing Alfred the Great (70009?) and Robin Hood (70038?) on those trains in the summer of 62. Probably just normal Immingham locos, I suppose.
Drivers might also return north on one of the Class 114 dmus working from Peterborough to Grimsby/Cleethorpes services. In those days it was the fixed eight-hour day. The eight hours included signing on, reading notices, walking to the loco, preparing it to the extent necessary, a twenty-minute PNB in the middle, etc. As it took three and a half hours from Grimsby to Kings Cross it would not be possible to do a return trip within the eight. Changing drivers at Peterborough would be the best solution: remember that it was all one company so no no problem about doing one leg on an express and the other on a partially-braked freight.
I expect that one of the morning up trains would have been a Peterborough crew from Grimsby going home after working the Peterborough-Grimsby News.Drivers might also return north on one of the Class 114 dmus working from Peterborough to Grimsby/Cleethorpes services.
The only Britannia I saw on these trains was 70036 Boadicea, which I photographed on a morning arrival at Kings Cross on Saturday 1st September 1962. Darnall Brush type 2s took over the workings two months later (Nov 5th), but there were numerous steam substitutes over the next six months, mainly LNER Pacifics and V2s. A Pacific arriving at Kings Cross on these Cleethorpes trains, would likely have been attached at Peterborough, and replaced there on the return working! There are also reports in the Railway Observer over this period, of Britannias substituting (for diesel failures prior to departure) and working the daily diagram to KX and back.Immingham had 70035-041, though I've read that the London turns were mainly worked by 70038-041.
