I'll be walking from Lewes to Brighton. If I buy a return London Lewes will I be able to return from Brighton, please?
Thank you Watershed. Do you mean by vice versa that a return London Brighton would be valid for Lewes? I'd rather buy a London Brighton to make sure I won't have any problem getting in at BrightonYes, that would be fine. London to Lewes is valid via Brighton, and vice versa.
Yes, London to Brighton is valid via Lewes, provided the ticket is not restricted to a specific operator.Thank you Watershed. Thank you jfollows. How do you know this, please? If I learn, I won't have to ask again.Yes, London to Brighton is valid via Lewes, provided the ticket is not restricted to a specific operator.
Many thanks jfollows. Mmm not so simple...The routeing guide at https://rgpp.iblocks.co.uk/reference-data
However it’s a lot to take in.
For London-Brighton, valid routes are shown on maps LB and VB at https://rgpp.iblocks.co.uk/maps
The process of coming up with lists of valid maps can be quite involved, although London-Brighton is a relatively simple case.
Alternatively, you can use a ticket purchase site and if it comes up with an itinerary then it’s a valid route.
In this particular case it’s been asked a few times before so I knew already that it was valid.
Thank you Hophead. My problem is that I haven't found a way of adding a via point. I use 3 apps: TrainPal, TrainSplit and NationalRail. In neither of them I can see where I can add a via pointOr: get a quote for a ticket from London to Lewes (or London to Brighton). Then, amend it to add a via point (either Brighton or Lewes in this case). Is the cost the same? Then your route is probably valid.
My preference in these circumstances is to get the ticket to the point I want to return from. In the event of a conversation at the barrier, I'd prefer to delay my arrival than my departure (unless a tight connection or rendez-vous is involved).
TrainSplit website allows up to 5 via points, I believe. Same on the Android app. iOS doesn't have the functionality yet.Thank you Hophead. Many thanks MrJeeves. I found the via points in Advanced options on the Android app.TrainSplit website allows up to 5 via points, I believe. Same on the Android app. iOS doesn't have the functionality yet.
It might let you add more than that, but I think it ignores them after a certain amount.

Thanks Hophead. Found it. To buy a ticket, you can select a retailer. On the National Rail website (mobile version) you need to select Preferred Route - not at all obvious. National Rail won't sell you a ticket, but will show you the fares.
