You would have imagined such an easement would still be needed to cater for those London trains which call at Hampden Park heading into Eastbourne but skip it heading towards Polegate (and vice versa).

701405 (Fare route) During engineering works between 30th August and 29th September 2025, passengers from Slaithwaite travelling to Dewsbury with tickets on route (00092) VIA HUDDERSFIELD may use the direct replacement bus between Slaithwaite and Brighouse. This fare route easement applies in both directions.
These were all temporary easements for which the dates have now passed.

Added:

701413 (Local) During engineering works in the Gloucester area until 5 October, passengers travelling between Yate and Stroud may travel via either Bristol Parkway or Cheltenham Spa. This local easement applies in both directions.

No trains are running through Gloucester for the next few days but there are a variety of replacement buses. This easement is intended to help with trains which would normally reverse in Gloucester but currently miss it out instad. This means that the quickest route between Stroud and Yate typically involves a change in Cheltenham.

Gloucester and Cheltenham are common routeing points for both Yate and Stroud, so the standard rules permit direct trains to and from Cheltenham. If travelling via Bristol Parkway, the fastest route usually involves changes there and in Swindon. This is much further than the shortest route and is not normally permitted with a through ticket.

Retailers don't normlly show travel via Cheltenham or Bristol Parkway as being permitted. nre.co.uk doesn't show either route as valid even with this easement, although gwr.com allows the route via Bristol Parkway and Swindon.

Looking more into this, there are two pairs of rules in the data for this easement. The "Cheltenham" rules have Cheltenham as a via point but not as an applicable location (they use Stonehouse, Gloucester and Cam & Dursley instead). The "Bristol" rules have Gloucester as an applicable location even though the route doesn't go near Gloucester, and both rules apply to journeys to Stroud and not ones to Yate.

I'm not sure what the data for this easement should include, but I can understand why the implementation of the data doesn't match the text at the moment.

As well as the above changes, the data for easement 701401 has changed. It now includes Cross Gates as an applicable location, which means that nre.co.uk now shows tickets between Edinburgh and Cross Gates, Garforth or East Garforth as being valid on itineraries which involve a doubleback from Leeds.

It doesn't show this for Micklefield as (like Cross Gates) that is a "mandatory timing point". Retailers treat a train which goes non-stop through Garforth or East Garforth in the same way as one which doesn't go there at all. They don't do this for Cross Gates or Micklefield, so an easement is needed to double back through either of those stations. The text remains:

701401 (Doubleback) Passengers from Edinburgh travelling to Cross Gates, Garforth, East Garforth and Micklefield may doubleback via Leeds. This easement applies in both directions.

Some changes were published in the routeing guide yesterday.
Changes from 01 Oct 2025 (599) to 08 Oct 2025 (600).

Easement changes:

Added:

701414 (Fare route) Passengers travelling from Swanwick to Stations between Peterborough and Alnmouth inclusive may travel via Southampton. This routeing point easement overcomes NFM64 fares checking and operates in both directions.
The routeing guide says nothing about the route codes in the NFM64 data, but retailers use them to restrict the routes they treat as being valid. For example, they consider Southampton Group to pass the fare check for a "not via London" ticket but not for an "any permitted one. This easement is intended to allow tickets with either route code to be used that way.

The data doesn't actually apply it to York, or to Chester-le-Street, Manors, Cramlngton, Pegswood, Widdrington or Acklington, although it does apply it to Wakefield Westgate and Leeds.

A bigger issue is that it is a "fare route" easement (which overrides a restrictive route code) rather than a "routeing point" one (which allows an routeing point to be used even when the fare check fails).

701415 (Doubleback) Passengers travelling from Swanwick to Stations between Peterborough and Alnmouth inclusive may double back via St. Denys and Southampton. This easement applies in both directions.
This is a doubleback easement for the same journeys as 701414. It is intended to let you double back through St. Denys, but my understanding is that, as it's part of the Southampton routeing group, a double back through the station is valid under the standard rules.

This doesn't really matter given the problems with 701414, though.

A change to the routeing guide was published yesterday.
Changes from 08 Oct 2025 (600) to 10 Oct 2025 (601).
Easement changes:
Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):
701414 (Fare route) (Routeing Point) Passengers travelling from Swanwick to Stations between Peterborough and Alnmouth inclusive may travel via Southampton. This routeing point easement overcomes NFM64 fares checking and operates in both directions.
This is now a routeing point easement. The data already included Southampton Central as an applicable location, and now also includes St. Denys as one.

As a result, nre.co.uk now shows journeys between Swanwick and Doncaster as being valid via Southampton and London. The same applies for every journey in the easement data.

The following post was made on 16th October 2025.

A change to the routeing guide was published yesterday.
Changes from 10 Oct 2025 (601) to 15 Oct 2025 (602).

The data for easement 701414 was changed so it only takes effect if you travel via Southampton Central. It previously let you change in St. Denys instead. The flexible tickets for the affected journeys all use 1L, 2V and 9D restriction codes, none of which bar break of journey.

The text remains:

701414 (Routeing Point) Passengers travelling from Swanwick to Stations between Peterborough and Alnmouth inclusive may travel via Southampton. This routeing point easement overcomes NFM64 fares checking and operates in both directions.

Some changes to the routeing guide were published on Friday.
Changes from 15 Oct 2025 (602) to 17 Oct 2025 (603).

Easement changes:

Added:

701416 (Doubleback) Passengers travelling from Stations between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton to Bescot Stadium can travel via Tame Bridge Parkway and may double back via Bescot Stadium. This double back easement applies in both directions.
Trains between Wolverhampton and Birmingham via Tame Bridge Parkway run non-stop through Bescot Stadium. so the standard rules don't permit a change between the lines towards Wolverhampton and Walsall at Tame Bridge Parkway.

The text of this easement permits that route for a small group of journeys. nre.co.uk doesn't allow even this. This may be because the easement data allows a doubleback through Tame Bridge Parkway rather than Bescot Stadium.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701413 (Local) During engineering works in the Gloucester area until 5 October, passengers travelling between Yate and Stroud may travel via either Bristol Parkway or Cheltenham Spa. This local easement applies in both directions.
The end date has been removed from the text here. The data for the easement didn't have one as it was, but it has changed in other ways.

Specifically, the "via Bristol" rules had Gloucester as an applicable location, but now also include Cheltenham. Extra rules have been added which say journeys between Yate and Stroud or Kemble via Swindon can travel via Bristol Parkway.

This easement was originally created for dates when the line through Gloucester station was closed, and I don't know if that's scheduled to happen again. nre.co.uk doesn't show tickets between Stroud and Yate as being valid via Cheltenham or Bristol Parkway on a date without engineering works, but I don't know if that means anything.

This has been a long-needed easement but will need changing again when Willenhall and Darlaston open, and also needs to extend to Walsall otherwise journeys to Walsall still have to go the long way round.

Some changes have been published in the routeing guide over the last week or so. Sorry about the delay.

On 22nd October, the following was published:
Changes from 17 Oct 2025 (603) to 22 Oct 2025 (604).

Easement changes:

Added:

701428 (Fare route) During engineering works in the York area on the weekends of 25/26 October and 1/2 November 2025, passengers travelling with tickets on route (00095) via York may use services that do not pass through York.
No trains are serving Thirsk on those dates, and York only has trains to Scarborough. There are various buses, includes one between Darlington and Leeds. Flexible Darlington-Leeds tickets use the "via York" route, so this easement lets you use it on the bus. It also means that there is a flexible London-Edinburgh ticket which would let you use TPE between Carlisle and Edinburgh, if only on those dates.

nre.co.uk doesn't show this, possibly because the data has York (and only York) as an applicable location, which I think just lets you go via York with a "via York" ticket.

I don't know if there is a way to change a route to "any permitted", but a fare route easement with every other station as an applicable location may come close.

701417 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 4 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester to Edinburgh can travel via Doncaster, this map easement applies in both directions.
There are no trains between Micklefield and York then, none through Preston and none between Carlisle and Lockerbie. Trains between Leeds and Selby only run on the 4th. As a result, the quickest route between Liverpool and Edinburgh will often be via Doncaster, hence this easement.

The data has it as a map route which applies to journeys via Doncaster which are between Edinburgh and some of the stations between Liverpool and Manchester, or Stockport. The applicable locations are Carlisle, Doncaster and Hazel Grove.

nre.co.uk shows Liverpool-Edinburgh as being permitted on this route, but not Edinburgh-Liverpool. This may be because Edinburgh-Liverpool (as an example) has one map combination (YA+VN) which permits travel via York, but neither map includes Doncaster.

701422 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1to 4 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester to Edinburgh and Glasgow Central/Queen Street can travel via Sheffield and Doncaster, this routeing easement applies in both directions.
This is a similar to easement 701417. Both are map easements and each affects the same stations between Liverpool and Manchester. This one also permits travel to Glasgow Stations but requires travel via Sheffield.

The data is quite similar. It applies to journeys to Glasgow which go via Hazel Grove, Sheffield and Doncaster, and has Sheffield as extra applicable location. Glasgow-Liverpool is again permitted on one map combination (YG+VN) which doesn't include Doncaster.

nre.co.uk doesn't show any of these routes as valid either. The only possible difference is that no Earlestown-Glasgow route goes east of Hellifield, but none of the stations in the data is association with Earlestown Group.

701423 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 4 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Preston to Edinburgh and Glasgow Central/Queen Street can travel via Manchester, Sheffield and Doncaster, this routeing easement applies in both directions.
This easement is the same as 701422 except it covers a different list of stations in England. The text refers to Preston; the data also includes Buckshaw Parkway (as Preston is closed then, this is where trains to Manchester start). As it happens, the "fare check" means tickets between Buckshaw Parkway and Edinburgh or Glasgow only have mapped routes via Preston.

As with Liverpool and Manchester, there are mapped routes via York but not via Doncaster, and this easement has no effect.

701419 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 4 January 2026, Passengers with tickets routed via Lancaster can travel via BBN and WGN, this map easement applies in both directions.
This is another wap easement for the same dates, but it's intended for different tickets. No trains are calling in Preston on those dates, and there are a few trains each day which run non-stop between Wigan and Carlisle via Blackburn and Settle. These follow a route between Blackburn and Wigan which none of the routeing maps permit, so an easement is needed for anyone who needs to change trains.

The data is different. It only tries to cover tickets between Warrington Bank Quay and Carlisle. It requires an itinerary via Wigan and Blackburn (which is the way the diverted trains go) and has Blackburn, Bolton, Lancaster and Wigan Group as applicable locations.

nre.co.uk can't find any flexible tickets as they still have a "via Lancaster" route restriction. It doesn't find any advance tickets if I specify "change in Wigan". I don't know why this is, or if it is connected with this easement.

701424 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1to 6 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Carlisle and Edinburgh can travel via Newcastle, this map easement applies in both directions.
I read the text as saying that someone with a ticket from one of the stations between Carlisle and Edinburgh to anywhere else can go via Newcastle.

The data is different, as it only affects journeys between Edinburgh and one of the stations between Carlisle and Haydon Bridge inclusive. Travel to Edinburgh via Newcastle is normally permitted from most of the stations between Carlisle and Newcastle; the only exceptions are Wetheral and Brampton.

This easement works fine for Carlisle. For Wetheral and Brampton, it only works for itineraries which double back via Carlisle; if you don't then the fare check bars travel via Newcastle and this easement is irrelevant.

701418 (Map) During engineering work taking place 1 to 14 January 2026 Passengers travelling from Lancaster and Carnforth to Stations between Settle and Carlisle, this map easement applies in both directions.
The text seems to be incompelete. The data is a map easement for tickets between Lancaster or Carnforth and one of the stations betwneen Settle and Carlisle inclusive except for Lazonby and Kirkoswald. It applies for itineraries via Penrith and has Long Preston, Penrith and Skipton as applicable locations.

Penrith is only served by buses between Carlisle and Oxenholme during this period, so I don't know what route the traveller is expected to take.

701425 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 14 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Lancaster and Carlisle can travel via Skipton, this map easement applies in both directions.
The text means that any ticket to or from a station between Lancaster and Carlisle (where "between" means either via Oxenholme or via Barrow, I suppose) is valid via Skipton.

The data, instead, applies to tickets from Carlisle to one of the stations between Lancaster and Giggleswick inclusive with Skipton as an applicable location. Both Lancaster and Carlisle have direct trains to Skipton, but nre.co.uk doesn't allow one ticket to be used to travel from Lancaster or Clapham to Carlisle via Skipton, possibly because it involves doubling back through Long Preston, Hellifield and Gargrave.

701426 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 14 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Birmingham and Carlisle can travel via Leeds and Settle, this map easement applies in both directions.
This is another map easement where the text doesn't match the data. The data applies to journeys between Carlisle and any of Birmingham, Wilnecote or Tamworth which go via Appleby and Settle. It has Lancaster, Leeds and Settle as applicable locations.

nre.co.uk doesn't show travel between Birmingham and Carlisle via Leeds as being valid with a through ticket, with no more joy for Nuneaton or Willington. I can think of two things which may be relevant. The flexible tickets between Birmingham and Carlisle have a "via Lancaster" route code and nothing gives permission to avoid Lancaster with these. And none of the maps for journeys between Birmingham and Carlisle (BE, BP and WS) include a route between Birmingham and Lancaster, Leeds or Settle.

701427 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 14 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Birmingham and Carlisle can travel via York and Newcastle, this map easement applies in both directions.
This is another map easement for which the data differs from the text.

The data for this map easement affects journeys between Carlisle and Birmingham, Wilnecote, Tamworth, Burton-on-Trent, Willington, Chesterfield, Derby or Sheffield, and has Lancaster, Newcastle and York as applicable locations.

nre.co.uk doesn't show any of the routes in the data as being valid via Newcastle.

None of the maps for journeys between Birmingham and Carlisle include Newcastle or York, and the flexible tickets have a "via Lancaster" route code.

There are "any permitted" tickets between Tamworth and Carlisle, but the maps for the route (BE, WM and WS) don't include Newcastle or York.

Tickets between Burton or Willington and Carlisle have Derby as an associated routeing point. "Any permitted" tickets are valid via Leeds under the standard rules, but none of the maps for the route include York or Newcastle.

701420 (Map) During engineering works taking place between 5 January to 14 January Passengers with tickets routed via Lancaster can travel via BBN and WGN, this map easement applies in both directions.
The text is identical to 701419 except for the dates. On these dates the line through Penrith is closed. As with 701419 the data includes from and to stations rather than a route code.

The data affects journeys from Carlisle to Deansgate, Manchester Oxford Road or Manchester Picadilly, but not Manchester Victoria. It has Wigan Group, Bolton, Blackburn and Lancaster as applicable locations.

As with 701419, this doesn't find routes for flexible tickets as they have the "via Lancaster" route code. If it wasn't for that, the diverted route would be valid for those tickets based on the MG map.

701421 (Map) During engineering works taking place between 5 January to 14 January, Passengers travelling between Carlisle and Liverpool Stations with tickets routed via Lancaster can travel via Blackburn and Wigan, this map easement applies in both directions.
This is similar to 701420 but for Liverpool, and also has data which differs from the text.

The data covers all tickets between Carlisle and any station between Liverpool Lime Street, Huyton and Bryn inclusive. It has Wigan North western, Blackburn and Lancaster as applicable locations.

As with 701420, the thing which stops nre.co.uk from showing through tickets as being allowed for these journeys is the "via Lancaster" route code rather than the map combinations.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):
701416 (Doubleback) (Map) Passengers travelling from Stations between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton to Bescot Stadium can travel via Tame Bridge Parkway and may double back via Bescot Stadium. This double back easement applies in both directions.
This is now a "map" easement rather than a "doubleback" one. The data has both Bescot Stadium and Tame Bridge Parkway as applicable locations.

On the 23rd, the following change was made:
Changes from 22 Oct 2025 (604) to 23 Oct 2025 (605).

Easement changes:

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701416 (Map) Passengers travelling from Stations between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton to Bescot Stadium can travel via Tame Bridge Parkway and may double back via Bescot Stadium. This double back map easement applies in both directions.
This just fixes something which was missed out the day before.

On the 24th, the following changes were made:
Changes from 23 Oct 2025 (605) to 24 Oct 2025 (606).

Easement changes:

Added:

701429 (Fare route) Customers holding tickets routed NOT DARLINGTON 00099 may travel via Darlington on 3 and 9 November 2026. This route easement applies in both directions but is not valid on LNER services.
The line through Yarm is shut then with replacement buses between Middlesbrough and Northallerton. This easement lets a "not via Darlington" ticket be used via Darlington on those dates, and so avoiding the buses.

The data restricts it to a list of ticket codes, but every "not via Darlington" ticket is on the list.

In addition, the wording was changed for several easements:

Easements 701417, 701418, 701421, 701422, 701424, 701425, 701426 and 701427 had ", this " change to ". This " in the text.

Easements 701419 and 701420 also had "BBN and WGN" replace with "Blackburn and Wigan".

Easement 701423 also had "routeing easement" changed to "map easement".

ON the 27th, the following changes were made:
Changes from 24 Oct 2025 (606) to 27 Oct 2025 (607).

Easement changes:

Added:
701430 (Local) Passengers from Cheltenham travelling to Worcestershire Parkway may travel via Worcester Shrub Hill. This local easement applies in both directions.
This lets a ticket between Cheltenham and Worcestershire Parkway be used via Worcester, which I imagine is sometimes useful.

701431 (Fare route) During engineering works between 27 December 2025 and 1 January 2026 tickets routed AP Greater Anglia Only (00428) are valid on connecting Elizabeth Line Services at Stratford London to London Liverpool Street. This fare route easement will apply in both directions.
The bay platforms are closed then at London Liverpool Street with Greater Anglia only running as far as Stratford.

I wasn't offered any advance tickets between Colchester and London on one of those dates. I wasn't offered many between Colchester and Stratford, so that may be a coincidence.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701428 (Fare route) During engineering works in the York area on the weekends of 25/26 October and 1/2 1 and 2 November 2025, passengers travelling with tickets on route (00095) via York may use services that do not pass through York. This routeing easement applies in both directions.
This just changes the wording.

On the 29th, the following changes were made:
Changes from 27 Oct 2025 (607) to 29 Oct 2025 (608).

Easement changes:

Removed:

700221 (Doubleback) Customers travelling from, to or via Truro to St Ives, Carbis Bay, Lelant and Lelant Saltings may double back between St Erth and Penzance. This easement applies in both directions.
This easement dated from before there were any routeing points in Cornwall. The ordinary rules let you double back within Penzance Group, so this easement was redundant.

Added:

701432 (Doubleback) Passengers travelling from Stations between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton to Bescot Stadium can travel via Tame Bridge Parkway and may double back via Bescot Stadium. This double back easement applies in both directions.
This is a "doubleback" version of 701416. With both there, nre.co.uk offers itineraries for a ticket between Shrewsbury and Bescot Stadium. It doesn't for Wolverhampton or any intermediate station, I suspect because it counts as a local journey.

On the 30th the following changes were made:
Changes from 29 Oct 2025 (608) to 30 Oct 2025 (609).

Easement changes:

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701428 (Fare route) During engineering works in the York area on the weekends of 1 and 2 November 2025, passengers travelling with tickets on route (00095) via York may use services that do not pass through York. This routeing fare route easement applies in both directions.
This just puts the correct type of easement in the text.

701429 (Fare route) Customers holding tickets routed NOT DARLINGTON 00099 may travel via Darlington on 3 and 9 November 2026, 2025 using specific train UIDs (K41579, K41580, K41581, K41582, K41583, K41584, K41585, K41586, K41587, K41588, K41589, K41590, K41591, K41592, K41593, K41594, K41595, K41596, K41597, K41598, K41599, K41600, K41601, K41602, K41603, K41604, K41605, K41606, K41607, K41608, K41609, K41610, K41611, K41612, K41613, K41614, K41615, K41616, K41617, K41618, K41619, K41620, K41621, K41622, K41623, K41624, K41625, K41626, K41627, K41628, K41629, K41630, K41631, K41632, K41633, K41634, K41635, N00469, N00470, N00471, N00472, N00473, N00474, N00475, N00476, N00477, N00478, N00479, N00480, N00481, N00482, N00483, N00484, N00485, N00486, N00487, N00488, N00489, N00490, N00491, N00492, N00493, N00494, N00495, N00496, N00497, N00498, N00499, N00500, N00501, N00502, N00503, N00504, N00505, N00506, N00507, N00508, N00509, N00510, N00511, N00512, N00513, N00514, N00575, N00576, N00577, N00578, N00579, N00580, N00581, N00582, N00583, N00584, N00585, N00586, N00587, N00588, N00589, N00590, N00591, N00592, N00593, N00594, N00595, N00596, N00597, N00598, N00599, N00600, N00601, N00602, N00603, N00604, N00605, N00606, N00607, N00608, N00609, N00610, N02075, N02076, N02077, N02078, N02079, N02080, N02081, N02082, N02083, N02084, N02085, N02086, N02087, N02088, N02089, N02090, N02091, N02092, N02093, N02094, N02095, N02096, N02097, N02098, N02099, N02100, N02101, N02102, N02103, N02104, N02105, N02106, N02365, N02366, N02367, N02368, N02369, N02370, N02371, N02372, N02373, N02374, N02375, N02376, N02377, N02378, N02379, N02380, N02381, N02382, N02383, N02384, N02385, N02386, N02387, N02388, N02389, N02390, N10663). This route easement applies in both directions but is not valid on LNER services.
This corrects the dates and also adds a list of almost 200 train UIDs to the text. None of the UIDs are scheduled to be used on the specified dates. The data is unchanged.

701424 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1to 6 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Carlisle and Edinburgh can travel via Newcastle, this map easement applies in both directions.
As written this means someone with a Carstairs to Edinburgh ticket can travel via Newcastle - very good value.

Similar good value with tickets such as Oxenholme to Penrith or Wolverhampton to Penkridge with these:
701425 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 14 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Lancaster and Carlisle can travel via Skipton, this map easement applies in both directions.

701426 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 14 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Birmingham and Carlisle can travel via Leeds and Settle, this map easement applies in both directions.

701427 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 14 January 2026, Passengers travelling from Stations between Birmingham and Carlisle can travel via York and Newcastle, this map easement applies in both directions.
Pity the Routeing Guide is seemingly not part of the contract by January.

The following changes to the routeing guide were published on Wednesday.
Changes from 30 Oct 2025 (609) to 05 Nov 2025 (610).

Easement changes:

Added:

701433 (Routeing Point) Passengers travelling from Llandrindod to Cardiff Central with tickets on route (07789) TFW ONLY VIA HOW may travel via Craven Arms. This Routeing Point easement overcomes the Fare Check rule and applies in both directions.
The "TFW only via HOW" route code is used for advance tickets to or from the Heart of Wales line between Llanelli and Craven Arms. Travel between Cardiff and Llandrindod is usually quicker via Craven Arms, but nre.co.uk only offered advance tickets via Llanelli before this easement was published. It now shows both routes as being permitted.

701434 (Circuitous Route) Passengers travelling from Stations between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton to Bescot Stadium can travel via Tame Bridge Parkway and may double back via Bescot Stadium. This circuitous easement applies in both directions.
This is a positive "circuitous route" easement, and I do not know what effect they have. The data has Bescot Stadium and Tame Bridge Parkway as applicable locations, and applies to journeys via Tame Bridge Parkway between Bescot Parkway and the stations between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton inclusive except for Codsall.

Between this and easements 701416, 701432 and 701434, nre.co.uk shows tickets between Shrewsbury and Bescot Stadium as being valid with one change in Tame Bridge Parkway. It accepts journeys from Bescot Stadium to one of the stations on the list east of Shrewsbury, but not ones to Bescot Stadium.

At a guess, I'd say that this situation would improve if the map easement (701416) had Wolverhampton as an applicable location. It should also work if CA was a valid map for journeys between Walsall Group and Wolverhampton, but perhaps there's a reason to avoid that.

701436 (Doubleback) During engineering work taking place 1 to 14 January 2026 Passengers travelling from Lancaster and Carnforth to Stations between Settle and Carlisle can travel via Skipton. This double back easement applies in both directions.
This is a doubleback easement which has the same dates and from, to, via and applicable locations as easement 701418. nre.co.uk doesn't show travel via Skipton as being permitted, possibly because neither easements permits a doubleback through Gargrave and both easements require travel via Penrith.

701437 (Circuitous Route) During engineering work taking place 1 to 14 January 2026 Passengers travelling from Lancaster and Carnforth to Stations between Settle and Carlisle can travel via Skipton. This circuitous route easement applies in both directions.
This is another positive "circuitous route" easement. The first sentence is identical to 701436 (along with the from, to, via and applicable locations) so I don't know what it was intended to do differently.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701418 (Map) During engineering work taking place 1 to 14 January 2026 Passengers travelling from Lancaster and Carnforth to Stations between Settle and Carlisle can travel via Skipton. This map easement applies in both directions.
This adds a missing clause to the easement text. The data is unchanged.

701429 (Fare route) Customers holding tickets routed NOT DARLINGTON 00099 may travel via Darlington on 3 and 9 November 2025 using specific train UIDs (K41579, K41580, K41581, K41582, K41583, K41584, K41585, K41586, K41587, K41588, K41589, K41590, K41591, K41592, K41593, K41594, K41595, K41596, K41597, K41598, K41599, K41600, K41601, K41602, K41603, K41604, K41605, K41606, K41607, K41608, K41609, K41610, K41611, K41612, K41613, K41614, K41615, K41616, K41617, K41618, K41619, K41620, K41621, K41622, K41623, K41624, K41625, K41626, K41627, K41628, K41629, K41630, K41631, K41632, K41633, K41634, K41635, N00469, N00470, N00471, N00472, N00473, N00474, N00475, N00476, N00477, N00478, N00479, N00480, N00481, N00482, N00483, N00484, N00485, N00486, N00487, N00488, N00489, N00490, N00491, N00492, N00493, N00494, N00495, N00496, N00497, N00498, N00499, N00500, N00501, N00502, N00503, N00504, N00505, N00506, N00507, N00508, N00509, N00510, N00511, N00512, N00513, N00514, N00575, N00576, N00577, N00578, N00579, N00580, N00581, N00582, N00583, N00584, N00585, N00586, N00587, N00588, N00589, N00590, N00591, N00592, N00593, N00594, N00595, N00596, N00597, N00598, N00599, N00600, N00601, N00602, N00603, N00604, N00605, N00606, N00607, N00608, N00609, N00610, N02075, N02076, N02077, N02078, N02079, N02080, N02081, N02082, N02083, N02084, N02085, N02086, N02087, N02088, N02089, N02090, N02091, N02092, N02093, N02094, N02095, N02096, N02097, N02098, N02099, N02100, N02101, N02102, N02103, N02104, N02105, N02106, N02365, N02366, N02367, N02368, N02369, N02370, N02371, N02372, N02373, N02374, N02375, N02376, N02377, N02378, N02379, N02380, N02381, N02382, N02383, N02384, N02385, N02386, N02387, N02388, N02389, N02390, N10663). except on LNER Services between Darlington and Northallerton. This route easement applies in both directions but is not valid on LNER services.
This replaces the long list of UIDs with a second statement of the LNER restriction. The data remains unchanged, and does not refer to LNER.

GWR need to extract a digit to sort out the wildly inaccurate fares currently showing on NRE when inputting journeys from North Downs Line stations to Gatwick during the weekend blockades in January 2026.

Itineraries that include rail replacement buses from Guildford to Gatwick that don't call at Gomshall are returning ✠ANY PERMITTED prices when the far cheaper VIA GOMSHALL tickets should be offered.

Example:

Blackwater - Gatwick Airport off peak return prices
£53.80 - ✠ANY PERMITTED
£35.60 - VIA GOMSHALL

The routeing guide was amended twice last week.

The following changes to the routeing guide were published on Wednesday:
Changes from 05 Nov 2025 (610) to 12 Nov 2025 (611).

Easement changes:

Removed:

701390 (Fare route) During engineering works between Bristol and Bath from 27 to 30 October 2025, passengers on Great Western services travelling between Chippenham/Melksham and the Bristol area with tickets routed (00831) VIA BATH SPA may travel via Swindon. This fare route easement applies in both directions.

701395 (Map) During engineering works between Bristol and Bath from 27 to 30 October 2025, passengers travelling between Chippenham/Melksham and the Bristol area may travel via Swindon. This map easement applies in both directions.

701410 (Doubleback) During engineering works on 19 October 2025, passengers travelling Shelford (Cambs), Whittlesford Parkway, Great Chesterford, Audley End, Newport (Essex), Elsenham (Essex), Stansted Mountfitchet and Stansted Airport to or via London may travel via Cambridge, doubling back through Cambridge South. This doubleback easement applies in both directions.

701412 (Map) During engineering works on 19 October 2025, customers travelling from Shelford (Cambs), Whittlesford Parkway, Great Chesterford, Audley End, Newport (Essex), Elsenham (Essex), Stansted Mountfitchet and Stansted Airport to or via London may travel via Cambridge. This map easement applies in both directions

701428 (Fare route) During engineering works in the York area on the weekends of 1 and 2 November 2025, passengers travelling with tickets on route (00095) via York may use services that do not pass through York. This fare route easement applies in both directions.
The dates for these temporary easements have all passed.

Added:

701438 (Map) Passengers travelling on LNER Services South of Edinburgh between 17 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 to Leuchars may travel via Dundee. This map easement is applicable in both directions.
There are no trains over the Forth Bridge then, with some trains being diverted via Stirling between Edinburgh and Dundee. This is intended to let travellers to Leuchars avoid the buses.

nre.co.uk doesn't show (as an example) Newcastle–Leuchars as being valid via Dundee. I think this is because Dundee isn't a valid routeing point for Leuchars for this ticket.

701439 (Doubleback) Passengers travelling from Penistone, Silkstone Common, Dodworth, Barnsley, Wombwell, Elsecar and Chapletown to or via Newcastle may double back between Meadowhall and Sheffield. This double back easement applies in both directions.
It's sometimes quickest to catch a train from Newcastle to Sheffield and then get the next one towards Huddersfield. The text of this easement permits journeys from or to a station between Chapeltown, Barnsley and Penistone inclusive to, from or via Newcastle.

For journeys between Newcastle and Wombwell, Elsecar or Chapeltown, it only allows journeys via Leeds with a doubleback through the origin. Going between Newcastle and Barnsley or a station west of there, it allows journeys via Doncaster but not via Leeds.

It doesn't allow journeys via Newcastle (such as Barnsley–Morpeth) to go via Sheffield at all. Easement 700507 does permit travel from Barnsley, Wombwell, Elsecar or Chapeltown via Sheffield, Doncaster and Newcastle, but only if the maps permit it (as an example, it allows Barnsley–Morpeth tickets to be used that way, but not Chapeltown–Morpeth ones).

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701433 (Routeing Point) Passengers travelling from stations between Ffairfach and Llandrindod (inclusive) to Cardiff Central with tickets on route (07789) TFW ONLY VIA HOW may travel via Craven Arms. This Routeing Point easement overcomes the Fare Check rule and applies in both directions.
This extends permission to travel via Craven Arms to most of the stations on the Heart of Wales line. Advance tickets from stations at the south end of the line use a different route code.

In addition, the data for easement 701200 has changed. It was already restricted to journeys from or to the 10 stations named in the easement, but it now also specifies that the other end needs to be on the Liskeard–Looe branch or west of Liskeard. The text remains:

701200 (Doubleback) Customers travelling from or via Liskeard to Saltash, St Budeaux Ferry Road, Keyham, Dockyard (Devonport), Devonport (Devon), St Budeaux Victoria Road, Bere Ferrers, Bere Alston, Calstock and Gunnislake, may travel to Plymouth and doubleback through Devonprt (Devon) station. This doubleback easement applies in both directions.

The original version of the data was already quite restrictive in terms of what it allowed. I don't know what difference this change has made.

The following changes were published in the routeing guide yesderday.
Changes from 12 Nov 2025 (611) to 14 Nov 2025 (612).

Easement changes:

Added:

701440 (Fare route) During engineering works on 22 & 23 November, normally travelling via Woking will be valid for travel via Guildford. This fare route easement applies in both directions.

701441 (Routeing Point) During engineering works on 22 & 23 November, normally travelling via Woking will be valid for travel via Guildford. This fare route easement applies in both directions.
No trains are scheduled to stop in Woking next weekend, so these are intended to let people go via Guildford anyway.

The data for 701440 is a "fare route" easement (so would normally allow tickets with a specific route code be used via another station entirely), but doesn't specify which route code it should affect. If it does anything, it lets some tickets between Basingstoke and Twickenham be used via Reading. nre.co.uk does let tickets between Basingstoke and Twickenham be used via Reading with "not via London" or "London not Underground" tickets, so it does seem to work.

The data for 701441 is a "routeing point" easement. It it does anything, it lets Weymouth, Brockenhurst, Basingstoke, Twickenham, Richmond, Barnes and Clapham Junction be valid routeing point for journeys to and from any stations associated with them.

I'm not sure how either easement helps with travel via Guildford, though. As an example, nre.co.uk doesn't show a Surbiton–Fareham tickets as being valid that way.

The following post was made on 22nd November 2025.

Two sets of changes were published in the routeing guide in the last week.

The following was published on Wednesday:
Changes from 14 Nov 2025 (612) to 19 Nov 2025 (613).

Easement changes:

Removed:

701407 (Fare route) Journeys priced on routes (00267) VIA BANBURY, (00305) VIA HIGH WYCOMBE, (00362) VIA HIGH WYC&SHR, (00363) VIA HWYC & BHM, (00364) CH & TFW ONLY, (00402) AP HIGH WYCOMBE, (00432) AP H WYC & SHREW and (00435) AP CH AND TFW ONLY may travel via Aylesbury during engineering work closures on 8th and 9th November 2025. This Fare route easement will apply in both directions.

701429 (Fare route) Customers holding tickets routed NOT DARLINGTON 00099 may travel via Darlington on 3 and 9 November 2025 except on LNER Services between Darlington and Northallerton. This route easement applies in both directions but is not valid on LNER services.
The dates for these temporary easement have now passed.

Added:

701442 (Fare route) Passengers with tickets routed Taunton may travel via Yeovil Junction and Castle Cary between 8 and 14 December. This easement applies in both directions.
Nothing is running between Castle Cary and Taunton that week. Trains are being diverted via Bristol rather than Yeovil, so someone with (say) a "via Taunton" Gatwick-Newquay ticket wouldn't need a easement to use the diverted trains. This easement permits a different route, but it's not an especially fast one.

701443 (Fare route) Passengers travelling from Crewe to Carlisle with tickets routed via Preston (00317) may travel via Blackburn between 01 and 04 January 2026. This easement applies in both directions.
This affects the same dates as easements such as 701417. No trains are going through Preston then and a few trains are being diverted between Carlisle and Wigan via Settle and Blackburn.

This easement lets someone use a flexible ticket between Carlisle and Crewe on the diverted trains. nre.co.uk doesn't show this if you change train along the way, even if the entire journey involves advertised through trains, because there's nothing to tell it this is a valid route for any ticket.

I'm beginning to wonder if a couple of easements for journeys from/to/via Carlisle and Wigan North Western would be more useful than the various easements for these dates to let people with specific tickets avoid Preston.

The following changes were published yesterday.
Changes from 19 Nov 2025 (613) to 21 Nov 2025 (614).

Easement changes:

Added:

701444 (Circuitous Route) Passengers holding tickets routed ANY PERMITTED from St Germans to London Paddington between 23 February 2026 and 6 March 2026 may travel via Liskeard using specific train UIDs (P22962, V55440) only. This easement applies in the outward direction only.
This has been planned well in advance and I don't have details of what is planned for that period. From what I can see, the line between Plymouth and Totnes is closed between 21/2 and 8/3, with the closure extended to Exeter on 28/2 and 1/3.

This is a positive "circuitous route" easement. Here, I think, it's intended to negate easement 300385 (which bars travel via Parr) for the first journey opportunity to Plymouth on weekdays. The listed UIDs don't exist at the weekend.

gwr.com doesn't show this as being a permitted route, and some of the alternatives refuse to plan a journey 3 months in advance.

In addition, the data for easement 701438 has changed. It now has records added to it which give a list of UIDs for LNER trains. The text remains:

701438 (Map) Passengers travelling on LNER Services South of Edinburgh between 17 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 to Leuchars may travel via Dundee. This map easement is applicable in both directions.

nre.co.uk continues to show journeys between Leuchars and Newcastle via Dundee as not being permitted, even for itineraries which involve a train on the list.

And the data for the "via Salisbury" (00618) and "AP Salisbury" (00438) route codes has changed. It no longer permits the use of these tickets on ferries, so gwr.com will only offer a more expensive "not via London" ticket to someone booking a ticket from Bristol to Cowes.

I am confused by the concept of a “positive Circuitous Route” easement. The Guide itself says:-
An easement which extends permission is a positive easement. An easement which narrows permission is a negative easement. Map, double-back and fare route easements are always positive.

Circuitous route easements are always negative.

Other kinds of easements can be positive or negative. A journey which follows a route otherwise permitted by the Routeing Guide may be forbidden by a negative easement.

Should 701444 be a map easement?

The routeing guide data has been amended three times (so far) this week.

On Tuesday, the following changes were published:
Changes from 21 Nov 2025 (614) to 25 Nov 2025 (615).

The data for easement 701438 has changed. Perth has now been added as an applicable location. It already contained Dundee and Stirling. The text remains:

701438 (Map) Passengers travelling on LNER Services South of Edinburgh between 17 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 to Leuchars may travel via Dundee. This map easement is applicable in both directions.

nre.co.uk still doesn't show tickets from Leuchars to Newcastle as being valid via if you start with a train from Leuchars to Dundee (although it does accept tickets between Leuchars and Retford on that route).

It does (and, I think, already did) accept a route which involves taking a train from Leuchars to Ladybank, then one back through Leuchars to Dundee and others on to Edinburgh and Newcastle. Most off peak tickets to or from Leuchars permit a break of journey, so someone with one of those could skip the Leuchars-Ladybank-Leuchars section.

In addition, the data for some route codes changed.

The data for "via Honiton" (00840) tickets now includes requirements to avoid Bridgewater and Tiverton Parkway (it already had one for Castle Cary), and also to avoid GWR services. The last of these could make planning a journey between Salisbury and Barnstaple more awkward.

The data for "AP Salisbury" (00438) and "via Salisbury" (00618) tickets were changed to require travel by hovercraft.

On Wednesday, the following changes were published:
Changes from 25 Nov 2025 (615) to 26 Nov 2025 (616).

Easement changes:

Added:

701445 (Doubleback) Passengers travelling from Oxford to Fishguard Harbour for Rosslare Europort may doubleback through Didcot Parkway. This doubleback easement applies in both directions.
While the text doesn't make it clear, this easement may be intended to permit a doubleback between Didcot and Reading. Easement 82 permits this for "not via London" tickets, but the Rosslare ones have a "Fishguard Stena" route instead.

nre.co.uk doesn't let me plan a journey to Rosslare, and neither does gwr.com. tfw.wales does, but it doesn't show journeys via Reading as being valid. While I can't confirm which itineraries it considered but rejected, this may be because the data doesn't permit a double back through Goring & Streatley with this ticket.

In addition, the data for easement 701443 has changed. It had a term which just contained the "via Preston" route code. This has been altered so that it now specifies that you can go via Preston with a "via Preston" ticket. I don't know what effect this has. The text remains:

701443 (Fare route) Passengers travelling from Crewe to Carlisle with tickets routed via Preston (00317) may travel via Blackburn between 01 and 04 January 2026. This easement applies in both directions.

Yesterday (that is, on Thursday), the following changes were published:
Changes from 26 Nov 2025 (616) to 27 Nov 2025 (617).

The ferry and hovercraft restrictions in the data for "AP Salisbury" (00438) and "via Salisbury" (00618) tickets have been removed.

The following post was made on 1st December 2025.

Some changes to the routeing guide were published on Saturday.
Changes from 27 Nov 2025 (617) to 29 Nov 2025 (618).

Easement changes:

Removed:

300385 (Circuitous Route) Customers traveling from St Germans via Plymouth may not travel via Liskeard. This easement applies in both directions.
The removal of this is, I imagine, connected with easement 701444. nre.co.uk now says that you can use a ticket between St Germans and (say) London via Liskeard, although gwr.com does not.

701307 (Map) During engineering closure of the line between Swindon and Chippenham on weekends of 22/23 and 29/30 March 2025. Customers from Didcot to Chippenham will be valid via Bath Spa or Westbury. Customers from Chippenham to Bath Spa and Bristol may travel via Trowbridge This map easement applies in both directions
The dates for this easement have passed.

Added:

701446 (Fare route) Passengers travelling to Leuchars on LNER and connecting services can travel via Dundee between 17 January and 25 January. This Fares easement overcomes NFM64 fares checking. This easement applies in both directions.
This is intended to be a "fare route" version of easement 701438. It affects journeys between Leuchars and some of the stations in England which LNER serve.

As a fare route easement, it overrides restrictions caused by the route printed on the ticket. The tickets LNER price between Leuchars and Newcastle have "any permitted", "LNER only" or "LNER & connection" routes, so don't benefit from this.

701447 (Map) Passengers travelling from Streatham Hill to Bexhill on Tickets Routed AP SOUTHERN (07777) and NOT LONDON (00700) can travel via Norwood Junction. This map easement applies in both directions.
This easement is intended to compensate for the fact that the only map combination for journeys between Streatham group and Eastbourne group is VB, and that doesn't include a link between Streatham and Crystal Palace. Other maps are available if you go via St Leonards, but this may be slower.

nre.co.uk shows journeys from Streatham Hill via Norwood Juction and Gatwick as being valid, but not ones in the other direction. This may be because the data only has Streatham Hill and Norwood Junction as applicable locations, and Norwood Junction doesn't appear on the VB map.

The following changes to the routeing guide were published on Wednesday.
Changes from 29 Nov 2025 (618) to 03 Dec 2025 (619).

Easement changes:

Removed:

701441 (Routeing Point) During engineering works on 22 & 23 November, normally travelling via Woking will be valid for travel via Guildford. This fare route easement applies in both directions.
This was a temporary easement, although the data didn't include an end date.

Added:

701448 (Local) Passengers travelling from Gloucester towards Oxford on Any Permitted routed Super Off-Peak tickets can travel via Worcestershire Parkway. This Local easement applies in both directions.
The shortest route between Gloucester and Oxford is via Swindon and Didcot, so I did wonder about someone going from Gloucester to Didcot via Worcestershire Parkway and Evesham.

The data doesn't allow this, but instead affects travel between the stations between Oxford and Pershore inclusive on the one hand, and between Ashchurch and Gloucester on the other. As far as I can tell, nre.co.uk already showed these journeys as being valid without this easement.

Gloucester-Oxford tickets are available with a "via Evesham" route, meaning the more expensive "any permitted" tickets are available that way. There are advance tickets defined for the route, but I don't know if any are actually sold.

For every other station pair listed in the data, travel via Evesham is permitted by the shortest route rule.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701416 (Map) (Local) Passengers travelling from Stations between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton to Bescot Stadium can travel via Tame Bridge Parkway and may double back via Bescot Stadium. This map local easement applies in both directions.
This has been changed from a map easement to a local one. The data is otherwise unchanged. As before, 701432 is a double back easement and 701434 a positive circuitous route one for the same purpose.

With this change, nre.co.uk allows tickets between Shrewsbury and Bescot Stadium to be used with a double back from Tame Bridge Parkway, but doesn't allow this for any other ticket the easement should affect.

701442 (Fare route) Passengers with tickets routed Taunton may travel via Yeovil Junction and Castle Cary between 8 and 14 December. This fare route easement applies in both directions.
The text has been reworded slightly. The data contained two odd-looking conditions, and these have been merged into one more ordinary-looking one. nre.co.uk continues to permit some journeys which make use of this easement.

701444 (Circuitous Route) Passengers holding tickets routed ANY PERMITTED from St Germans to London Paddington between 23 February 2026 and 6 March 2026 may travel via Liskeard using specific train UIDs (P22962, V55440) only. This circuitous route easement applies in the outward direction only.
As with 701442, the text has been reworded and two odd-looking conditions have been merged together.

nre.co.uk shows tickets from St Germans to London as being valid via Par on the 23rd, but only if I select the bus to Totnes rather than the one to Tiverton Parkway. This is, I think, because the latter bus doesn't go through Newton Abbot or Exeter, meaning that it doesn't consider the itinerary to follow a mapped route. The shortest route rule doesn't help as the journey involves doubling back through St Germans.

It really needs to be between Bescot Stadium and Walsall, or beyond.

Some changes to the routeing guide were published on Saturday.
Changes from 03 Dec 2025 (619) to 06 Dec 2025 (620).

Easement changes:

Removed:

701440 (Fare route) During engineering works on 22 & 23 November, normally travelling via Woking will be valid for travel via Guildford. This fare route easement applies in both directions.
This was a temporary easement, although the data for it didn't include an end date.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701438 (Map) (Fare route) Passengers travelling on LNER Services South of Edinburgh and connecting services via London Kings Cross between 17 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 to Leuchars may travel via Dundee. This map This positive Routeing Point easement will override the Fares Check using NFM64 fares which would otherwise prevent journey planers showing this option. The easement is applicable applies in both directions.
The text of this easement now calls it a "routeing point" easement, but the data calls it a "fare route" one. As a fare route easement, I doubt this does anything. It only affects journeys via London but, according to the data, the most southerly station a ticket can be from or to is Peterborough.

In addition, the data for some other easements has changed.

Easement 701443 has had Wigan North Western added as an applicable location. The text remains:

701443 (Fare route) Passengers travelling from Crewe to Carlisle with tickets routed via Preston (00317) may travel via Blackburn between 01 and 04 January 2026. This easement applies in both directions.

nre.co.uk allows a journey between Crewe and Carlisle on a through train with a "via Preston" ticket, but not with a change in Warrington. I think you'd also need a map easement to allow that.

Easement 701447 has had Crystal Palace added as an applicable location. The text remains:

701447 (Map) Passengers travelling from Streatham Hill to Bexhill on Tickets Routed AP SOUTHERN (07777) and NOT LONDON (00700) can travel via Norwood. This map easement applies in both directions.

nre.co.uk now shows journeys which go via Norwood Junction and Gatwick as being valid with "not via London" tickets.

Avanti's website still refuses to sell tickets for Birmingham to Carlisle on those dates. TrainSplit will though (as a through advance ticket, not split), which is interesting...

Is that on the direct service runninng on 3 Jan? That would be expected as it's valid due to the direct train rule, which Pico seems to just completely ignore(!)

Any other journey seems to sell me a split, but with no share of saving because there's no through ticket to compare against. If I disable splits, then:

Screenshot 2025-12-08 at 09.48.01.png

For the others to be valid, I think there needs to be a map easement for the dates with applicable locations of Wigan North Western and Blackburn as the trains are timetabled to travel directly between these two routeing points where there is no link on the relevant maps.

Ah, ok. It's a few weeks since I looked in detail so can't remember if TrainSplit was offering through tickets on all trains or not. I only had a brief look yesterday to see if this change would affect Avanti's site

Some changes to the routeing guide were published on Tuesday.
Changes from 06 Dec 2025 (620) to 09 Dec 2025 (621).
Easement changes:
Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):
701438 (Fare route) (Routeing Point) Passengers travelling on LNER Services South of Edinburgh and connecting services via London Kings Cross between 17 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 to Leuchars may travel via Dundee. This positive Routeing Point easement will override the Fares Check using NFM64 fares which would otherwise prevent journey planers showing this option. The easement applies in both directions.
Other than the easement type, the data is unchanged.

701446 (Fare route) Passengers travelling to Leuchars on LNER and connecting services can travel via Dundee between 17 January and 25 January. This Fares easement overcomes NFM64 fares checking. This easement applies in both directions.Passengers travelling on LNER Services South of Edinburgh and connecting services via London Kings Cross between 17 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 to Leuchars may travel via Dundee. This positive Fare route easement will override the Fares Check using NFM64 fares which would otherwise prevent journey planers showing this option. The easement applies in both directions.
This has been reworded, but the only substantive change to the text is a requirement to travel "South of Edinburgh via London Kings Cross". Similarly, the data has had a "via Kings Cross" restriction added to it.

nre.co.uk still doesn't show a journey from Leuchars via Dundee as being permitted then with any of the destinations I checked. I think this was, at least in part, because both easements only apply to journeys via London which don't go as far as London.

The data has changed for a few other easements:

Easement 701399 had had Leeds, Pontefract Monkhill and Pontefract Tanshelf as applicable locations. It now also has Wakefield Westgate as one. The text remains:

701399 (Local) Customers travelling from Woodlesford, Castleford, Pontefract Monkhill or Tanshelf and Normanton to Sandal & Agbrigg, Fitzwilliam, South Elmsall and Adwick may travel via Leeds. This local easement applies in both directions.

nre.co.uk shows a journey with one change in Leeds as being valid for someone going between one of the stations between Wakefield and Doncaster and Castleford, Pontefract Monkhill or Pontefract Tanshelf (all in Pontefract Group), but not Normanton or Woodlesford.

Easement 701401 had let people double back through Crossgates. It now also lets them double back through Leeds, but requires an itinerary via Leeds. The text remins:

701401 (Doubleback) Passengers from Edinburgh travelling to Cross Gates, Garforth, East Garforth and Micklefield may doubleback via Leeds. This easement applies in both directions.

Easement 701409 had also had Crossgates an an applicable location and now has Leeds both an an applicable location and one itineraries need to go through to be affected. The text remains:

701409 (Circuitous route) Passengers from Edinburgh travelling to Cross Gates, Garforth, East Garforth and Micklefield may travel via Leeds. This Circuitous Route easement applies in both directions.

nre.co.uk shows tickets between Edinburgh and Cross Gates, Garforth or East Garforth as being valid via Leeds, but not ones to Micklefield. I think making Micklefield an applicable location for easement 701401 would change this, but I don't know what easement 701409 actually does.

The data for easement 701418 had had Long Preston, Penrith and Skipton as applicable locations, and required travel via Penrith. It now also has Blackburn and Wigan North Western as applicable locations, and also requires travel via Appleby and Carlisle and not via Entwistle. The text remains:

701418 (Map) During engineering work taking place 1 to 14 January 2026 Passengers travelling from Lancaster and Carnforth to Stations between Settle and Carlisle can travel via Skipton. This map easement applies in both directions.

You could, I suppose, go between Lancaster and Settle via Penrith, Carlisle and Appleby, but you wouldn't go anywhere near Skipton. nre.co.uk doesn't consider travel via Carlisle or via Skipton to be valid in any case.

As well as this, the data for "via Honiton" (00840) tickets no longer prevents use of GWR trains. It still denies travel via Bridgwater, Castle Cary or Tiverton Parkway.

The following post was made on 13th December.

The data for an easement was changed in the routeing guide yesterday.
Changes from 09 Dec 2025 (621) to 12 Dec 2025 (622).
Easement changes:
Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

The text hasn't changed for any easement, but the data has for some of them.

Easement 700287 now affects journeys to or from City Thameslink or London St Pancras. It already covered most of the southern London Terminals (London Bridge, Blackfriars, Cannon Street, Charing Cross, Waterloo East, Waterloo and Victoria). The text remains:

700287 (Circuitous route) Customers travelling from Cuxton, Halling, Snodland, New Hythe or Aylesford to London Terminals Stations in possession of tickets routed (00130) Not Valid on HS1 Or (00131) Plus HS1 may not travel via Paddock Wood. This easement applies in both directions.

The routeing guide was amended four times last week.

These changes were published on Monday:

Changes from 12 Dec 2025 (622) to 15 Dec 2025 (623).

Easement changes:

Added:

701449 (Circuitous Route) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark North Gate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) can travel via Doncaster. This Circuitous Route easement applies in both directions.

701450 (Doubleback) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark North Gate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) can travel via Doncaster. This Doubleback easement applies in both directions.

There's a roughly hourly service from Retford to Doncaster, but only one train stops in Newark and then Retford on a weekday. LNER replaced "any permitted" fares with "not via Doncaster" ones on the 7th, and added dearer "via Doncaster" ones alongside.

These easements are intended to let "LNER only" tickets be used on the indirect route. No tickets between Newark and Retford use that specific route code at present. Some "rail sale" tickets planned for January are due to, but they're not on sale yet.

The following was published on Tuesday:

Changes from 15 Dec 2025 (623) to 16 Dec 2025 (624).

Easement changes:

Added:

701451 (Routeing Point) During Engineering works on 2 January 2026 to 3 January 2026, 10 January 2026 to 11 January 2026, 17 January 2026 to 18 January 2026 and 24 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 Passengers travelling between Chippenham and Reading or London Paddington can travel via Bath Spa. This routeing easement applies in both directions.

There are no trains between Didcot and Swindon on the 2nd, or Didcot and Chippenham on the other dates. Some trains between Bath and Reading are diverted via Newbury.

This easement is intended to let tickets between Chippenham and Reading or London Paddington be used via Bath. It's a "routeing point" easement (used to let a traveller use a routeing point which fails the "fare check"), but no fare check is carried out for journeys between Chippenham and Reading or London Paddington. All three are routeing points, so no fare check is carried out for these tickets.

Fortunately, Chippenham–Reading and Chippenham–London tickets are valid via Bath and Newbury anyway, as the journeys are shown on the LA map. You would need an easement to use the trains between Chippenham and Reading West, but this one doesn't claim to help with that.

701452 (Routeing Point) During Engineering works on 2 January 2026 to 3 January 2026, 10 January 2026 to 11 January 2026, 17 January 2026 to 18 January 2026 and 24 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 Passengers travelling between Didcot Parkway and Bath Spa and Bristol stations can travel via Reading. This routeing easement applies in both directions.

This easement is intended to let tickets from Didcot be used via Reading and Newbury.

It actually does nothing as it's a "routeing point" easement which only applies to journeys from one routeing point to another. I think both "fare route" and "map" easements would be needed here as the flexible tickets use the "via Swindon" route, and none of the maps for the journey show a route via Newbury.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

030048 (Circuitous Route) Journeys from Kings Cross, Peterborough, Grantham, Newark North Gate Northgate and Retford to Selby, Wressle, Howden and Eastrington may not travel via York on tickets routed via Doncaster. This easement applies in both directions.

701449 (Circuitous Route) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark North Gate Northgate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) can travel via Doncaster. This Circuitous Route easement applies in both directions.

701450 (Doubleback) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark North Gate Northgate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) can travel via Doncaster. This Doubleback easement applies in both directions.

The name of a station has been spelt differently. There are no other changes.

The following changes were published on Wednesday:

Changes from 16 Dec 2025 (624) to 17 Dec 2025 (625).

Someone has removed all of the positive circuitous route easements.

Easement changes:

Removed:

701371 (Circuitous Route) Passengers travelling from Plumpton to Cooksbridge may travel via either Lewes or Wivelsfield. This Circuitous Route easement applies in both directions.

This contained almost the same text as 701370 and 701372. nre.co.uk continues to show tickets between Plumpton and Cooksbridge as being valid via Lewes but not Wivelsfield.

701409 (Circuitous Route) Passengers from Edinburgh travelling to Cross Gates, Garforth, East Garforth and Micklefield may travel via Leeds. This Circuitous Route easement applies in both directions.

This contained largely the same text as 701401. nre.co.uk continues to show tickets between and Edinburgh and Cross Gates, Garforth or East Garforth as being valid via Leeds, but not ones to Micklefield.

701434 (Circuitous Route) Passengers travelling from Stations between Shrewsbury and Wolverhampton to Bescot Stadium can travel via Tame Bridge Parkway and may double back via Bescot Stadium. This circuitous easement applies in both directions.

This contained almost the same text as 701416 and 701432. nre.co.uk continues to show tickets between Shrewsbury and Bescot as being valid via Tame Bridge Parkway but not ones for any of the shorter journeys these easements permit.

701437 (Circuitous Route) During engineering work taking place 1 to 14 January 2026 Passengers travelling from Lancaster and Carnforth to Stations between Settle and Carlisle can travel via Skipton. This circuitous route easement applies in both directions.

This contained almost the same text as 701418 and 701436. nre.co.uk continues to show tickets between Lancaster or Carnforth and a station between Settle and Carlisle as not being valid via Skipton on those dates.

701449 (Circuitous Route) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark Northgate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) can travel via Doncaster. This Circuitous Route easement applies in both directions.

This contained almost the same text as 701450. As far as I know, there was no way to book a ticket which was within the scope of this easement during the two days of its existence.

Changed (added sections in red, removed ones in green):

701363 (Circuitous Route) (Doubleback) Passengers from or via Glasgow Central to Hamilton West may doubleback from Hamilton Central. This circuitous doubleback route easement applies in both directions.

This changes the easement from a positive circuitous route easement to a doubleback one. nre.co.uk continues to show journeys between Hamilton West and Anderston as not being valid with a doubleback at Hamilton Central.

Other than the journey type, the details are identical to the local easement 701362. Local and doubleback easements expect different things from the fields, and I don't think the fields for this one are right for the text.

701431 (Fare route) During engineering works between 27 December 2025 and 1 January 2026 tickets routed AP Greater Anglia Only (00428) and Greater Anglia Only (00427) are valid on connecting Elizabeth Line Services at Stratford London to London Liverpool Street. This fare route easement will apply in both directions.

This adds the 00427 route code (used for "London evening/night out tickets", which I think have a quota) to the easement. I wasn't offered any of these tickets for journeys between Colchester and London on those dates, but I may be looking in the wrong place.

The data is (and was) a bit odd as it seems to only apply to journeys via Stratford International. This seems like an odd place to go if you are travelling from somewhere like Colchester to London Liverpool Street using Elizabeth Line services.

701444 (Circuitous Route) (Doubleback) Passengers holding tickets routed ANY PERMITTED from St Germans to London Paddington between 23 February 2026 and 6 March 2026 may travel via Liskeard using specific train UIDs (P22962, V55440) only. This circuitous double back route easement applies in the outward direction only.

This changes the easement from a positive circuitous route easement to a doubleback one. As easement 300385 has been deleted, no easement is needed to let someone travel via Liskeard. One would be needed to do that and then catch the bus from Plymouth to Tiverton Parkway, but this isn't that easement.

In addition, the data for some other easements has changed.

The data for easements 701419 and 701421 now affects journeys betwen Carlisle and Wigan North Western, but only affects "via Lancaster" (00307) tickets. The text remains:

701419 (Map) During engineering work taking place between 1 to 4 January 2026, Passengers with tickets routed via Lancaster can travel via Blackburn and Wigan. This map easement applies in both directions.

701421 (Map) During engineering works taking place between 5 January to 14 January, Passengers travelling between Carlisle and Liverpool Stations with tickets routed via Lancaster can travel via Blackburn and Wigan. This map easement applies in both directions.

nre.co.uk can still only find advance tickets between Wigan and Carlisle, and can't find any through tickets for a journey between Warrington and Carlisle with a change in Wigan.

The data for easement 701446 now includes Perth as an applicable location. The text remains:

701446 (Fare route) Passengers travelling on LNER Services South of Edinburgh and connecting services via London Kings Cross between 17 January 2026 to 25 January 2026 to Leuchars may travel via Dundee. This positive Fare route easement will override the Fares Check using NFM64 fares which would otherwise prevent journey planers showing this option. The easement applies in both directions.

It remains a fare route easement which doesn't specify which route code it affects, and an easement for which the data only applies to journeys via London but doesn't apply to any tickets which are normally valid via London.

The data for easement 701450 now allows a double back through Retford for tickets between Retford and Newark Northgate which use the 00027 route code. As mentioned before, none do at present. The text remains:

701450 (Doubleback) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark Northgate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) can travel via Doncaster. This Doubleback easement applies in both directions.

The following changes were published on Friday:

Changes from 17 Dec 2025 (625) to 19 Dec 2025 (626).

Easement changes:

Added:

701453 (Map) During engineering works on 1 March 2026, tickets routed VIA STAINES (00735) are valid via Weybridge. This map easement applies in both directions.

No trains stop in Staines then, and some trains between Reading and London are diverted via Chertsey and Weybridge. This easement lets you travel via Weybridge with a "via Staines" ticket which wouldn't otherwise allow it, although you still need to travel via Staines.

As a result, nre.co.uk lets you use an Egham–Hampton single via Staines, Virginia Water, Weybridge and London.

701454 (Map) During engineering works between 27 December 2025 and 1 January 2026 tickets routed AP Greater Anglia Only (00428) and Greater Anglia Only (00427) are valid on connecting Elizabeth Line Services at Stratford London to London Liverpool Street. This Map easement will apply in both directions.

This is a "map" version of easement 701431 (for dates when Greater Anglia trains don't go to Liverpool Street).

As with easement 701431, the data only applies to journeys via Stratford International. I don't know what this is intended to do, and, as the tickets it affects are all quota-controlled, I can't easily test it.

701455 (Map) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark Northgate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) can travel via Doncaster. This Map easement applies in both directions.

701456 (Routeing Point) Passengers travelling between Retford and Newark Northgate with tickets routed LNER Only (00027) can travel via Doncaster. This Routeing Point easement applies in both directions.

These are "Map" and "Routeing Point" versions of easement 701450. They all have Retford as an applicable location and apply to journeys between Newark Northgate and Retford.

There aren't currently any tickets between the two stations which use this route code.

701457 (Doubleback) Passengers travelling from Leicester to Tamworth can travel via Birmingham. This Double back easement applies in both directions.

The fastest route between Leicester and Tamworth is normally via Birmingham, Derby or Nuneaton. There are two map combinations. EM allows travel via Nuneaton. XB+BP includes Nuneaton–Birmingham and Birmingham–Tamworth links, but allows nothing as both links go through Water Orton.

This easement allows a doubleback through Water Orton with a ticket between Leicester and Tamworth.

701458 (Fare route) Passengers travelling from Stratford-upon-Avon to West Brompton can travel via Dorridge and High Wycombe to London Marylebone and onwards. This Routeing easement will apply in both directions.

I'm not too sure what this is intended to allow as an "any permitted" ticket was already valid via Dorridge, High Wycombe and London Marylebone. The data also refers to "AP High Wycombe" tickets, but they're also valid on that route.

The data includes no applicable locations, so I don't think it would affect how nre.co.uk, say, evaluates any routes.

701459 (Routeing Point) Passengers travelling from Stratford-upon-Avon to West Brompton can travel via Leamington Spa, Coventry and Watford Junction Wycombe to West Brompton. This Routeing easement will apply in both directions.

This is intended to let you go via Rugby with a ticket between Stratford-upon-Avon and West Brompton. The destination routeing point (if going to West Brompton) would be Willesden Junction, which passes the fare check without an easement. Stratford-upon-Avon is part of a routeing point group, so doesn't use a fare check.

As with 701458, the data includes no applicable locations.

There are difficulties with planning a journey via Rugby, however. The only valid map combination for a ticket between Stratford-upon-Avon and Willesden Junction is LONDON (requiring travel via London) and the only map combination for the first section of this which allows travel via Rugby (SM+EN) forbids travel via Birmingham.

The shortest route between Stratford-upon-Avon and West Brompton is via Leamington, Coventry and Watford Junction (without the doubleback to London Euston), but the data nre.co.uk uses includes an unusable link, and so that route isn't shown as being valid.

Presumably they have searched through the list of route codes and mistakenly chosen the first "LNER only" entry they came across (00027) rather than checking they had chosen the correct one (00481)... Elementary stuff, you'd have thought!

So not only have the people of Newark and Retford lost nearly all direct trains they have had a large price hike if they want to travel via Doncaster...

Indeed. LNER's response is that they are making Advance tickets valid via Doncaster, but that's a fat lot of use to commuters/daytrippers who - understandably - won't want to be at the mercy of unpredictable Advance pricing.

They are really pushing things here; they've priced the via Doncaster fares higher than a ticket from Newark to Doncaster. Now yes, there's more travel involved so you can just about understand it for a single - though given the circumstances it's rather unreasonable.

But pricing the seasons and Flexi Seasons that way is frankly outrageous. They are clearly relying on people not checking or understanding that a Newark-Doncaster season is cheaper and obviously valid for the double-back. They're treating those passengers as mugs.

I suspect thats an error by someone that doesnt understand how seasons work and hopefully will get fixed, now its been highlighted. However doesn't excuse the walk up fare hike.

I''m waiting for GWR to realise LNER got away with it and do the same with Pilning. Albeit that would affect far fewer people.

I dunno, you'd sort of hope that someone setting fares would know how season tickets work.
