Remember website development takes ages, and costs a fortune.
I'll keep that in mind next time I send an invoice!!

Be kind people.

To be clear, I definitely don't think any employees at any TOCs deserve abuse over this, but I also think it's fair to say that this has really been long overdue.

You're right that in the UK we've been lucky to benefit from some of the data having been opened up. I don't think that means we should rest on our laurels and avoid doing things to further improve the passenger experience and enable further revenue growth. We should be building on the foundations that have been laid, and not reducing transparency and data accessibility (which is what's happening in some areas, namely fares).

Obviously still working on it as there's no way back to train times from this page
Your browser has a back button, doesn't it?

I just tried to register, having been using RTT for years, and got this...!!!

At least in my case it does have a back button...

I'm tempted. In addition the historical data is being extended to 6 months from January 2026 as it says at the bottom of the page. Ooh..
Unofficially, more likely going to be the end of this month for the 6 months.

RTT shows 5Q00 as running throughout from Nuneaton to Euston, but it also carries a banner heading stating that the service was cancelled! I've not seen that before.

I daresay it's something to do with incoming data, rather than RTT itself, but I'm intrigued to know how that particular combinatuon can come about, if anyone knows, please?
There is a long standing issue where a cancellation is correctly reversed when it comes in (hence the locations aren't marked with cancelled or dashed out) but the original cancellation data that caused it still hangs around ... even if we manually delete it out of the schedule.

Obviously still working on it as there's no way back to train times from this page
As was said previously, all browsers have a back button.

There's potentially some weirdness in the registration flow but that means that there is already an account with the email address. Obviously early teething issues with a rollout like this so can happen. If you do forgot password you should be able to get to the account that way.

What are the benefits of RTT+ ?
All details are available at https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/plus/. There are some unannounced features as well which currently are:
  • System will show last date schedule was updated for that train service on detailed pages
  • Set numbers are visible in KYT diagrams and are searchable in quick search.
  • When searching for an item of rolling stock, it'll show everything it's running with.,
  • You can click the numbers in KYT diagrams to get to the all day search

I got an e-mail with a six digit code a few minutes later which allowed me to re-set and log in, so I presume I must have registered before ( albeit with a different password ) and forgotten that I had done so...?

Just had a look on my phone and it let me straight in without even asking for a password or anything, so I assume that's exactly what I've done...??

Needless to say, the Transport for Wales MK4s look a bit funny with the new set allocations!

Overall I'm quite happy with the features offered, giving it a one month try for £5 before I commit any more money into it, see how it goes!

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

And now just as I'm looking through, the RealTime data jumps up to 6 months.
Great work at the team for getting it done so quickly, I'm quite happy with my money spent!

Some operators have different procedures in how they handle cancellations, and also it can be an artefact of the systems they use to do that. It's even worse when a service restarts, as some operators put the allocation on the original service (then cancelled!)...
Thanks, I figured it would be something like that but it's nice to know :)

You don't get those with the budget version:

Yes, one of the features that was mentioned by Tom in post #2736, set allocations are visible as part of the subscription.

Speaking of TfW's MK4s, it would be nice if the illustrations could include GCs sets considering that even when it is allocated HD04-07, an LNER illustration shows up when it does. Obviously, I understand that this shouldn't be prioritised over the backlog of them to get done but it would be a nice touch in the long term future.

Just one comment for Tom, I've come across on another forum - food for thought especially in this day and age.

"Given RTTs large user base I'm quite surprised SSO hasn't been used for the login mechanism, eg Google signin with 2 factor authentication. A basic login system like what it appears to have, suggests anyone could share logins to avoid paying. Freight locate used to have that trouble".

The auth system is many things, but "basic" is not really accurate. It does support social auth (login with Google, Apple, etc etc) which can easily be enabled if @Tom was to choose to do so. It also natively supports its own app-based 2FA, and is future-proofed for e.g. U2F tokens if that was ever something considered useful.

The real aim behind it though was to produce something that could power an integrated ecosystem of internal (and potentially even external one day) products and services that benefit from the same single-sign on experience. Most of the work invested there has been to deliver that in a scalable way, given the sort of traffic that RTT receives every day.

Credential sharing is a fair risk to raise, but again - login sessions and information about them are recorded and I suspect misuse could be uncovered quite quickly if strange behaviour (beyond what you'd expect from a normal person using the service on-the-go, travelling etc) was observed against a specific account.

It's entirely possible to share 2fa tokens, or even email addresses. Requiring a social media or Google login would alienate a substantial proportion of the larger user base before you even start.

I'd guess that freight locate has a rather smaller user base who are perhaps more likely to share logins than the wider population.

I've replied to this on the forum the quote came from and others have replied in my place but I shall repeat it here for transparency (although I don't really understand why they didn't post it here as they've posted on this very thread!...)

I'm quite surprised SSO hasn't been used for the login mechanism
SSO is exactly what we have used and we have built out a centralised authentication system that can act as a unified single sign on for a whole suite of future RTT products. We've used a lot of industry standards to build it out including OAuth, which are the same things that underpin ...

eg Google signin with 2 factor authentication.
... social auth which is what is referred to here. We have the option to support social auth in the future but this is not something we're currently looking at as, frankly, I don't trust other companies to look after your personal data. We do everything in-house and all data is fully in our control in our UK based servers. Also... 2 factor authentication is supported within our authentication service.

I don't really have anything to add other than what @Adam Williams has stated who led on building out the auth system - which the first code was written for 5 months ago on our side. We have a lot of things that we're working on: bringing RailMiles into unified auth as already stated is the first one we're able to talk about currently. There's various other things in the wings that we're thinking about how to do well too.

Unofficially, more likely going to be the end of this month for the 6 months.
Thanks for you and your team's hard work on this.

I do have one pretty big concern I'd like to raise though, if you don't mind. I noticed you said 6 months of history should hopefully be live by the end of the month, but I think you've overshot this by about 1000 days or so?

Will you be retrospectively charging your subscribers 5.5x the original cost to account for the extra history now available?

I apologise for your concern, I just wanted everyone to be able to re-live the last GWR services to Brighton: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/se...3/0200-0159?stp=WVS&show=all&order=wtt&toc=GW

(No, free bonus feature. At least 4 years history, included in the subscription.)

Do the allocations from 2021 (of the limited TOCs which had it at the time) still remain? If they do that may push me to get it

Yes you can relive long past experiences of being lovely and snug on trains such as these!

Quite impressed to see the reach of the search - now I can reflect on my regrettable decisions to not get out and see more of the 175s during their final days with Transport for Wales!

Seriously though, it's quite impressive. Well done!

Some good functionality here. Probably not quite enough to persuade me to cough up, but certainly almost there. If there were more options for multi-TOC and multi-origin/destination filtering, I think I'd use it.

5Q00 was cancelled at Nuneaton at 10:24, and then reinstated at 10:37. It looks like RTT didn't process the reinstating.
I saw two green 769s at Nuneaton at 15:20! I don't know if it would be the same ones as i was too far away to catch the numbers

There are only 2 green 769s loose on the system at the moment so yes they would be the same ones!

Also Hi from a fellow Nuneatonian!

RTT+ data history now extends five years and will stay as this. We are looking at the possibility of extending further back towards 2012 (albeit with some patchy date ranges due to system issues), this would be subject to a further subscription fee.

And it would be nice if Tfw’s active travel 153s could show too
The active travel 153s are complicated. I have now looked into this in quite some detail. Without doing quite a lot of work we wouldn't be able to show their 153 numbers. When they are put into the sets, the carriage number is retained but the unit number is not - effectively the unit number is deregistered.

We will put the graphics up soon but I don't think we're going to be able to do anything around the vehicle numbers (i.e. the 52/55/57/58xxx or whatever they are) for some time as it's a lot of effort for little gain.

Some good functionality here. Probably not quite enough to persuade me to cough up, but certainly almost there. If there were more options for multi-TOC and multi-origin/destination filtering, I think I'd use it.
I posted this elsewhere as I think it's relevant.

Enthusiasts are not the primary target audience and are, from experience, a fairly price-sensitive group anyway if it doesn't meet their own full needs. However, the pricing has been developed to balance the enthusiast and broader market that RTT serves. Ultimately if I'm not going to persuade you that £25 (£2.10 a month, cheaper than a coffee at a coffee shop!) to (primarily) remove adverts and get a better user experience is a price worth apying then I'm never going to - and that's fine with me - I have to balance the revenue from advertising with the revenue gained from subscriptions.

Other services charge more than this to just remove adverts, and a lot of media companies charge a lot more and don't even remove adverts at all.
