The train I get into work in the morning is usually on it's first run in.

Something that often surprises me is to see water coming out of the top of the train just above the driver's cab and running down the front of the train as it comes into the platform.

Now the weather of late is very dry and sunny so it's not rain and it's too much for condensation. It happens almost every day with different sets so I'm sure it is not a fault either. It is always a class 156 I see this happening on.

So my question is where is the water coming from and why?

The only thought I can put towards it is that the water tanks have been filled up to the point of overflowing so water is escaping from them prior to any water being used

Toilet overflow outlet, not dirty water but fresh water in the storage tank, I see it all day long on 319's, but obviously this only happens because it's ac2 car dmu.

It seems to happen on just about any Northern 156 in the morning and is noticeable when they are joined up with corridor linkers.

I was at Norwich on a 156 on saturday, and some staff connected a water hose to the tanks on it, and pretty soon water sprayed out the top of the train and ran down the windows. It is a case of the water tanks being overfilled as far as i can tell :)

I've noticed 153s occasionally leaking water out of an overflow near the toilet - presumably this is also the fresh water tank?

Having watched them fill the tanks at Penzance many a time, I think standard practice seems to be to fill them until water comes out the overflow.

Edit: Obviously not 156s at PNZ, but 150s, 153 and Mk 3 stock.

It is the overflow from the roof mounted toilet water tank on the 52 car. It can also be seen flowing out of the fill point just after the hose is removed. No gauges are fitted so the only way to guarantee a full tank is to overfill them.

I have seen the hoses in a Mk4 set before (I think it was at Kings Cross) with water pouring out of all the overflows. Watched the fitter going down turning them off and pulling the pipes out...must lose a hell of a lot of water in the process though

On a 378 we get a lot of water trickling down the cab side windows. At first I was a bit concerned by it (haven't been driving long) especially after coming through the Thames Tunnel, however it's just the cab HVAC outflow!

And I would prefer that than the toilets running low on water by St. Erth on a London bound train ;)

Seriously though, does the more modern stock have gauges so you can see how full the tanks are?

Roy

I have a feeling the majority of new stock will use less water generally as the toilets have cleaning fluid in them. As for water the taps, I'm afraid I'm not too sure

Is it possible that the train was washed on exiting the depot, im not sure if they do that there?

When I'm watering Mk1s I wait until the water starts overflowing

By the time I get t he train it is already 40 mins into it's journey - so on a warm sunny day any residual moisture would have dried off.

In any case what I am describing is a substantial amount of water coming from a very localised point on the train. The overflowing toilet tank certainly fits with my observation.

It is interesting that it is still overflowing after 40mins (+ whatever time to get from depot to departure), I guess is it the train's braking causing the water to slosh about that makes it overflow?

Ive noticed on occasion that inner carriage connections on 158s and 170s drip water from underneath, presumably a leak/overflow in the water system as well.

220/1s have a red light on the outside of each toilet-fitted coach which, if water runs low or retention tank reaches a certain level, will illuminate.

Mk2's are the same, I tank until overflow. No way to tell the tanks are full otherwise.
