Audio/visual "next stop" announcements on buses

On Kinchbus's service 5 in Loughborough, there are a whole series of bus stops with generic or straight-up incorrect names:
I've just checked these, and these are the names that are in Naptan and have been set by Leicestershire County Council. For details on why the stops are named this way or to ask for stop name changes, you are best contacting them. Kinchbus is arguably just making it so that the announcements and next stop displays, match what is on the bus stop flag and that flag matches what Leicestershire County Council have called the stop.

Only the last stops I mentioned (Registry Office) are normally used by buses with audio-video announcements. Kinchbus have yet to implement audio-video announcements on the service 5 (usually run by a pair of 09-plate Optare Solos), and I imagine they won't bother until their new electric buses turn up this winter.

It’s not a case of ‘not bothering’. Theres a huge capital cost involved, and in particular, for the October 2026 deadline many buses will have to be fitted which will then be withdrawn over the next 6-18 months. Most of the costs will end up totally wasted - the cabling, labour, speakers, induction loops will all go to Barnsley. The screens and controller might just be re-usable.

I doubt most of the equipment will end up at the scrap yards. The companies will try and salvage as much as possible to avoid unnecessary repeat purchases.

First buses in Leicester will announce local amenities e.g "the next stop is Tower Street alight here for Leicester Royal Infirmary and Welford Road Stadium"

Has anyone else encountered this sort of thing recently?

Yes, I've noticed it on the Stagecoach East Midlands buses that have audio visuals enabled.

Further to my previous observations, I rode on one of the Sapphire-liveried Wright Pulsar 2s on the X3 yesterday: it has had its previously-installed audiovisual announcement system reactivated.

Later on, I rode on one of the older 17-plate E200MMCs, retrofitted with the two-line LED display, on the 58. Not long after leaving the city centre the announcements got stuck and remained this way for the rest of my journey to Hamilton.

Just out of interest, what type of display did the sapphire buses have?

There is a stop on First Aberdeen's route 18 which is announced as "Shops".

The corresponding stop directly across the road for the opposite direction is announced (correctly) as "Kincorth Shops".

There is a stop on route 11A which is announced as "Church" rather than "Craigiebuckler Church".

Cities tend to have more than one group of shops and more than one church.

I expect they have removed the locality part of the location and ended up with generic locations.

I heard an announcement on route 17A the other day: "The next stop is for Windmill Brae". To my knowledge, there has never been a stop called Windmill Brae.
Similar with the buses I use in Cheshire (Warrington's Own Buses), various stops are just announced as 'Post Office', even where the said Post Offices are long gone which includes my village. I even once had a driver ask where the Post Office was when he was driving the route. It's also an issue with stops being named after pubs, long since the pubs have closed.

trentbarton do this. Typically for schools or certain Supermerkets and points of interest.
Quite common on Trentbarton routes.
I believe all of the E200's are working again along with the two branded B8RLE's.

Or changed names. A former stop on Arriva's service 127 in Rothley towards Leicester is named "The Red Lion" despite the pub having been renamed to "Miller & Carter".

The service was recently unceremoniously rerouted to leave Rothley via Loughborough Road instead of Cossington Lane, but the announcements have yet to be amended.

Photo attached. These were installed when these buses were refurbished to Sapphire specification for the service 158.

EM still needs to get Lincoln Depot's announcements rolled out. The only ones that do it here are the 53 and 56.

The operators locally that i work with have found that Hanover simply aren't interested in supplying small fleets with Next Stop kit. McKenna Bros are better at being able to supply the Mobitec kit, but the controller is insanely complicated. Even as somebody who has worked with Mobitec kit for twenty years, it doesn't look like any real world usability testing has been carried out on it.
But that can be mitigated easily with a link to the ticketer, like Centrebus and Transdev have done. You log on, and the ticketer sends the command to the ICU602. Not to mention on the 1 to Alma park, when the bus gets to Grantham bus station, it automatically displays "This bus terminates here" on the outside.

Getting a little technical, the ‘terminates here’ displays aren’t driven by the ticket machine per se - the displays dynamically change as the bus proceeds along the route - which usually means the via points disappear one by one, but in the case of the 1, it being a circular, means the whole display changes from ‘Alma Park’ to ‘Bus Station’, and then finally to ‘terminates here’ at various points along the way.

That functionality is all part of the overall route code selected, which as you say, in the case of Centrebus is selected automatically by the ticket machine. It’s great when it all works (I say when, because of course as with any technology, there are always those occasions when things don’t work as they should!), and not only eases the drivers workload a little, but also prevents inaccurate information being presented to passengers as a result of a driver entering the wrong code, which is very easily done on a route which has multiple variations.

That automatic connection can also drive ‘departs in X mins’ displays on vehicles, as Transdev do. Centrebus don’t do it at the moment due to the Hanover conversions having difficulties supporting it, but it is hoped to include this functionality in future providing that can be resolved.

Hanover have told me they do also support the automatic setup from the ticket machine, and Aesys do too.

Definitely seen aesys do it on Trentbarton. Every time we reached swallow drive on the mainline, the driver just entered the Nottingham trip on the ticketer and boom, does not need to touch the TC430 at all. IDK if it does it on the Eg4s on Skylink Derby and Red Arrow, one thing the Hanover eg4 kept looping James Davidson's "This is red arrow to Nottingham" a couple of times when we got to Derby.

Stagecoach Hull are mostly still just showing the date and time on their new displays. On the ones that do work, the 11/111 are not reflecting the route changes at the start of September and announce 'Kingswood Leisure Park' as the next stop even though they no longer serve it.
East Yorkshire still have plenty of non-compliant vehicles including the 'coaching' buses which are regularly used in service. The 700/756 Hull Fair specials that I've used this week showed the destination on the screen but didn't announce or display any other stops.

Grimsby have definitely uploaded their data to the buses. It either shows the next stop or does the welcome aboard scrolling message. You would think someone would go around plugging the USB into the HTCs to upload the data.

The naming convention of the bus stop would need to be changed by the local authority, Arriva's next stop announcements will go with the stop name in Naptan. As an aside, this example stop would likely be named 'Loughborough Road' as Leicestershire's nomenclature uses the nearest adjacent side road. They have gone away from pub names, shop names etc for exactly the reason you give in your example.

There should be a bus stop being sighted somewhere on Loughborough Road as an alternative to the now unnerved one on Cossington Lane, although I gather its still not there yet despite being in the pipeline for over a year.

There is a temporary stop opposite the outbound but they may be waiting on getting a new permanent stop erected before uploading to the system to ensure it is correctly located.

In my experience with Leicestershire they will usually add into Naptan, but it depends if the stop has been authorised even if not sighted. I guess it depends who has put the temporary stop there but that's probably going off topic for this thread.

Well if they are like the so called real time bus stop displays they will not be very good

Its only on a few First Leicester stops, Nottingham City Transport had them previously on some but I don't know if they still do since their recent changes.

I've also noticed that when they use a bus with the audio visuals enabled on the 350 to Scunthorpe, it just shows the scrolling welcome aboard message, I'd have thought they'd have it programmed for that route by now, Grimsby have their equipped buses programmed for their equivalent, the 250.

I've noticed the Arriva routes 251 and 310 now have next stop announcements, so much more useful than I thought, even in familiar areas, very useful! Presumably other Arriva Herts routes have them too. The 907 to Stevenage, ran by Centre Bus also gained these announcements recently.

Stagecoach East Scotland is a mixed bag of nothing really, almost all the buses just show the clock, 1 or 2 of them also have a 'Remain seated until the bus stops' announcement (which no one follows anyway, infact I suspect if you didn't stand up before it stops some bus drivers would assume it was a miss press and drive on) when someone presses the bell, a few others also show 'Stop requested' on the screen, but none are showing stops or announcing them.

The existing stop opposite is referred to as Woodcock Farm, so that's what I would imagine a new stop for Leicester-bound buses would also be called, especially because it's on that side of the road that the said Woodcock Farm is situated.

Nottingham City Transport have them - alight here for Trent Bridge and the City Ground / alight here for the Lace Market National Ice Centre (can't remember if the Trent FM are a is part of that one!).

They've had screens so long the first buses I recall having them on the Green Line services (c.11 plate Solos) have since been replaced!

Old style screen, 16:9 (TV display) showing stopping on the left hand side, on the right side it's showing the next three stops, counterintuitively with the next one at the bottom, and current time.
MVIMG_20181214_075533.jpg

New style display, very wide screen, with NCT advertising on the left hand side, and the next three stops with the current one still at the bottom

Hopefully the new ones are a lot more reliable than the old ones!

I think the idea is that it's in perspective, i.e. looking along the road with the next stop closest to you.

Hopefully the new ones are a lot more reliable than the old ones!

Windows XP rebooting were not too infrequent.
In Sheffield some of them run Debian Linux and it's far more common to see them failed than working!
Not to say there's anything wrong with Debian of course, it's a perfectly good operating system used successfully in many different applications, but it does seem to suggest the will isn't there to maintain the system properly.

I've also seen a couple that just sit showing "FERROGRAPH OVD" - not sure what that means, can only assume it's the name of the manufacturer or something.

Blackpool Transport are quite good on this and even when their buses are away from Depot on various Rail Replacements jobs that they do despite where they are they will have the Rail Replacement route programmed in and appropriate announcements will be be made at every station stop by the on board system.

I was actually quite surprised once to be on a Blackpool Trnasport bus on a Rail Replacement job in Manchester and the announcements were working perfectly, I know they worked on normal service work but wasn't expecting them to be working on Rail Replacement jobs.
