Stansted Express Website Booking - No Railcard option

The frequent flyer website Head for Points highlights the fact that if you try and book tickets on the dedicated website of Stansted Express then it doesn't give you an option to add a railcard to the booking.

Surely any accredited booking site should enable railcard purchases as a matter of course?

Yes, you can use a railcard on Stansted Express trains

.... just not on the official Stansted Express website

If you are trying to book tickets on the official Stansted Express website here, you would probably think that you can’t. After all, there is no option to add a railcard.

That's shocking, LNER will apply the railcard discount.

Wording on the Stansted Express reads as follows,

Railcards​

Can I use a Railcard for booking Stansted Express tickets?
Railcards can’t be used for booking Stansted Express tickets online. If you wish to use a railcard, please purchase your tickets at a Stansted Express ticket office.

Something for the about to be nationalised bosses at Greater Anglia to immediately sort out? Absurd when we remember that the very private enterprise Heathrow Express has always made Railcard discounts easy to obtain.


Having just looked, I see that the Stansted Express website provides a link to the Greater Anglia website if you want to use a Railcard online.

Talk about bizarre limitations!

This isn't new and has been the case going back years (which doesn't make it any misleading I appreciate!) - definitely one to push on once it enters public ownership.

It is exactly the same on the Luton Express website. No option to select a railcard. But yet if you go directly to the EMR website then you can.

At least that just passes through to the normal EMR booking engine which prominently lets you add a railcard.

An additional frustration is that you can't use a railcard with Stansted Express 'advance' tickets.

I don't think the Luton Express / Stansted Express sites actually have to be accredited do they? The Gatwick Express website also didn't used to. It now does. Non-Lennon sales e.g. Ryanair you usually don't have the option to get a railcard discount.

Presumably that's actually partly why they don't offer an option to add a railcard. Not that it would be particularly difficult to set up the ticket types so they don't take railcards, but that's by the by.

I didn't even know Ryanair (or any other airline) sold rail tickets for travel to and from airports via its website.

On the other hand, Stansted Express Advance tickets only seem to be available via the Stansted Express website, not via the Greater Anglia site or that of any other operator.
