Could build them some new lines to play on. You are right that the plan does not consider all those gloating passengers from Shrewsbury who disembark at Snow Hill and laugh at the poor trams confined to shuttling to the New Street shopping centre.

Too many speculative threads fail to take into account the feelings of old stock. It is great we have the DfT to protect the rights of the old stock to keep going.
:D well done sir!

On the serious note, the line almost certainly offers an overall better service to the public as a local tram route than it would as a secondary heavy rail route, especially now the trams actually get through Birmingham city centre.

From Wednesday's Shropshire Star:

Direct Shropshire rail link with London could be back on track as plans for service to be resubmitted

An application for a direct rail link between Shropshire and London is set to be resubmitted, an MP has revealed.

The Wrexham Shropshire & Midlands Railway's (WSMR) application for an open-access service between Wrexham and London, via Shropshire, was rejected by the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) in July.

However, following the latest meeting of the Shrewsbury Transport Integration Group - which WSMR representatives attended - the meeting's chair, Shrewsbury MP Julia Buckley, announced on social media that the company intends to resubmit plans soon.

I hope they've got a plan to address the ORR's concerns beyond testing the definition of madness.

Will this be from London Euston or a different London Terminus?

I imagine if it's remotely credible then details will emerge in due course.

Not sure how adding extra trains in which had performance implications in the original proposal can possibly alter this time.

I suppose it is feasible to alter the old WSR route to use Paddington via Oxford?

The regulator is unlikely to accept an application on a second attempt with only changes to the stopping pattern.

Without wishing to take this off topic what is the fascination in some quarters with having direct train services to London? I’ve not been on this site that long but the seeming desire to have a glossy express service to London taking priority over local and regional services to mainline hubs and regional centres is quite frankly bizarre. Is it any wonder we have sub optimal services in this country when people seem to think the only way to run the railway is having a service to London.

<sarcasm> still at least the local MP won’t have to change trains</sarcasm>

It would be less of an obsession if regional trains were more frequent and timed to connect with mainline trains but unfortunately it's become normal to mostly disregard connectivity - e.g. GWR cutting up a service in 2 and making a 55 minute gap between the two halves. In that aspect Telford / Shrewsbury is not doing that badly, there's normally a 7 minute connection at Birmingham International from TFW to AWC, but when there are numerous places across the country where the mainline train arrives 5-10 minutes after the hourly (or worse) branch line train departs, or when the branch line train is not held for even 2 minutes if the main line service is delayed, the mentality against connections spreads throughout the country. Hence why a large proportion of travellers would rather have the french/spanish solution of a few direct trains per day compared to an hourly (or more frequent) 1-change journey.

Thanks for that reply. It does seem to be borne out in practice as you identify. I suppose the question will be will it change under GBR who can maybe be a voice of reason for a balanced and coordinated local/regional/express timetable?

The definition of madness is met by expecting a different outcome to the previous 3/4* failures of through Shrewsbury-London services.

* Unsure whether BR withdrew them once or twice??

Still surprising that nobody has tried to push a direct service to Manchester or Crewe which don’t need the crowded WCML and have frequent services already from Chester that could be extended a little.

That Crewe-London service could always be extended to Chester which would remove the need for the shuttle and bring down the Avanti fares somewhat

Where would LNR get bimodes for a small portion of an hourly route, or how quickly would Crewe – Chester be electrified?

Quickest option would probably be to fit up a loco to do a Crewe-Chester drag. Chester electrification has been talked about from lots of angles, so maybe it's a case of piling enough on to tip the balance? It would still take quite a while to deliver OLE though even if funding was agreed tomorrow.

I think the suggestion is to run Chester - Crewe - Shrewsbury - London.

Extending LNR Crewe terminators to Chester is another matter entirely, but probably for it's own thread in another corner of the forum.

What about the Wrexham part?

Maybe they could merge the Shrewsbury service with Lumo's approved Stirling service at Nuneaton, to avoid needing a new path on the WCML.
That would need a company merger too I suppose.

And years & years of meetings with the DfT as it would be dealt with as a totally new OA application.

That's practically going round in a circle from Wrexham to Shrewsbury! From Wrexham, it would probably be far quicker to just get an existing train to Shrewsbury via Gobowen and change at Shrewsbury!

Did I dream it or did Neil Kinnock visit Chester General (as it was) to mark the plans for electrification to Chester? This was, of course, many, many years ago. There was even an electric locomotive there for the occasion.

Because services like that lose lots of money.

Virgin had an excellent proposal to run to Stafford via Oxley chord and combine there. It would have finally achieved the desperately needed journey time improvement and reduced railheading car usage from Shropshire to Stafford. However, it too failed performance tests.

I agree. But with Wrexham being the first part of the company name, they either have to ditch the Wrexham name or make it a longer more winded route

Presumably on the split/ join basis? It's clearly the optimal journey timewise on existing infrastructure.

If there are enough units it might make sense to revisit the idea combining with the Chester trains. Don't know if Stafford is signalled for such moves, though.

The West Coast Mainline has been declared full so there would no point in another application to use the West Coast Mainline to Euston, it would just be rejected again. I cannot see an application for services to Paddington working either. The only route that may be worth trying is the Chiltern Line to Marylebone. We shall have to see what they decide to apply for if and when a new application is submitted.

There will be available capacity on the West Coast Mainline when HS2 London Euston to Birmingham Curzon Street eventually opens and HS2 services start operating. However, with three 400m long trains an hour each way, each with over one thousand seats, I expect everyone in the West Midlands Region West of Birmingham, including Shrewsbury, will then just go to Birmingham Curzon Street to travel to London on the HS2 train services.

Marylebone failed once already though, what might have changed to make that work?

A leisurely trundle via the backwaters of the west midlands is going to make any such service uncompetitive on journey times.
