Not always up to date as fleet status very fluid. Depends when @TT-ONR-NRN has time to update it. It's showing 5708 off-lease but it was in service over the weekend. Not unless it is out of miles or off-lease this very morning
I do always date at the top when the most recent update was done.
People keep reporting certain 455s as “stopped,” but then they appear in service again, which is why from time to time some might show wrongfully as Off Lease/Stopped.

PTSO or platform depending on the weather

I didn't know that so that's good to know

I will only rely on info of "stopped" units from those in the know when this is confirmed

They'll be stopped for repairs most likely.
They won't be off lease until they are taken to Newport

455 849, incidentally, has some minor significance in that it was the final 455/8 to enter service back in the 1980s...
It was distinctive for a while, because it carried the unit number in the traditional Southern position above the cab windows. These appeared to be on plates fixed to the cab front. After they were removed the fixing points were still visible for some years afterwards.

Yes, I have a photo of it like that ( and also a few of the Southern units later had the same, also briefly ); it made the front end look a lot better than having the numbers cluttered below the windscreens.

Can you send it here if possible, just took a quick google, can't seem to find any photos (maybe i'm blind.)

Oh very nice, I prefer that to the numbers near the gangway, do you know why they didnt do that for any other units?

SWR adopted that traditional position for all its other gangwayed units, except the 458s as originally built, so I don't know why they didn't for the refurbished 455s.

The only other exceptiosn were the (non-gangwayed) 707s, and 456s . The 707s had the number centrally below the windscreen, and the 456s had them either side low down on the bufferbeam (well, there weren't any buffers, but where they would have been).

A few people have asked about 5711 recently and it's back out in service today according to RTT, currently on 2H27 to Shepperton.

Probably because the plates with the numbers on and fitting them to the train cost rather more than just sticking the numbers on under the windscreens?

When the Selhurst units started getting the same treatment a while later on, it was very short lived and only a small number of units were thus treated; they also fairly quickly reverted to under the windscreens.

Presumably, again, it would have cost more.

It's also a pity that unlike Southern they didn't put the full six digit numbers on during refurbishment.

That area above the destination blinds is a combination of several panels, the window surround, the destination window surround and the roof panel, all fixed together. Any additional platework (just to carry a number) would have had to be fixed atop the rest, providing an ideal source for moisture ingress and corrosion.
Back in BR (possibly into SWT days, although my memory is now vague on the dates) some 455's suffered water ingress at the point above the cab rear bulkhead, ie above and behind the drivers head, where the main Mk3 style roof panel was attached to the cab roof panel.
This became another job that one particular chap became involved in at Wimbledon as I recall, who spent most of his time on top of 455 cabs rectifying same.

Why did they use plates, rather than stickers?

And, at least on the 455/8s, there was a convenient place to put the number above the gangway. (I believe that was originally intended, on those classes that had that cab shape (210, 317/0, 455/8) to be a headcode display)

The box above the gangway housed the AWS equipment.
