According to the Period 3 allocations, the MANs are stood down or will be very shortly.

27160-74 are being cascaded from Stockton to Carlisle and Morecambe, freed up by the Yutong E12s entering service there. They will see off the last MANs and presumably the last Versas, too.

All of those E300s have now moved from the North East to Cumbria - 27161 and 27164 having been repainted at Sunderland prior to cascade.

Hope this is the correct thread - I'm a Japanophile so I follow a few Japanese travel vloggers and one called Yuuka has posted a video of ex-Stagecoach Cumbria Olympian 14253 in use as an Airbnb in Ishikawa, Japan:

It's called the London Bus Hotel but AFAICS from its history it spent most of its time based in Kendal! The video is about 29 minutes long and has English closed caption subtitles. Electronic translation of the video description:
I stayed in a double-decker London bus that was turned into a full 3-bedroom house?! From the outside it looks like a normal bus, but inside it feels just like a real home. A must-watch if you love unique hotels, camper vibes, or crazy travel experiences!

Hope this is of interest to anyone tracking down vehicles which used to be in service with the company. :)

Bit of a random one, and wasn’t sure where to ask this…

Is Stagecoach facing competition in Morecambe from Lonsdale Buses? On BusTimes there seems to be a new 85 route by Lonsdale running 5 minutes in front of the existing Stagecoach 5 (from Morecambe up to Carnforth).

If anyone knows a little more (unless of course I’ve completely mis-read BusTimes!)

The only thing you've got wrong, it hasn't actually started yet. The start date is given as 26 October - but that's a Sunday, and there's no Sunday service! So the effective start date is Monday 27 October.

Doesn't seem like a good route to compete on so I'd assume the same, if Lonsdale were to compete somewhere it would be on the University routes rather than a something less busy like the 5. Edit, according to a member of the Lancaster Bus Users Group, it seems this is a commercial route competing with Stagecoach as it's going to be linked onto another commercial route in the Morecambe area that Lonsdale are starting (83 Brookhouse to Morecambe) which replaces a similar link withdrawn Stagecoach years ago.

Yes an interesting decision to compete on the route. The Bus Users Group speculate that it has been prompted by them losing the contract for the 88 and 89, so they're looking for something profitable (and operationally convenient) to run.

Both services are commercial operations and receive no subsidy from the county council or anyone else. Their success therefore very much depends on how much use local people make of them. Lonsdale Buses says on its website that the new services have been made possible by the arrival of four new buses in its fleet, although the Bus Users’ Group feels that the loss of the contract to operate services 88 and 89 between Lancaster and Knott End from the same date may also have been a factor.

That would be unwise at the end of October. Most Uni students will have season or longer term tickets, it will be relatively uncommon for people to pay £3 singles per journey. You would also need a lot of buses to reasonably compete with Stagecoach.

I don't think there is much promise in either of those two new routes. They'll be carting round fresh air I think.

That said, I don't think there is much you can compete with in the Lancaster area. A lot of it is very marginal and rural. Maybe you could hypothetically launch an express bus to Blackpool via the motorways to compete with the 42, perhaps, with 2-3 well timed journeys per day just in time for the Illuminations season.

A more direct Lancaster - Preston or Lancaster - Blackpool could work in affect but I think Lonsdale would have planned what they are doing

If I were Lonsdale, I'd be doing a deal with Stagecoach to buy the route instead of competing on it as I can't see there being enough demand for 2 operators running within 5 minutes of each other on an hourly service. This is going to be a big risk if it is commercial as I can see Stagecoach hitting back, all Stagecoach have to do is re-time by 10 minutes and that's Lonsdale without passengers for a while until it can change the 85, but then again Lonsdale have the headache of having to change the 83 too leading to passengers getting messed about, and as we all know that's not a good idea.

As a side note, rather than compete with Stagecoach, maybe Lonsdale would have been better enhancing one of it's other routes such as the Craven Connection services with additional journeys, or launching a set of once a week excursion type routes, making them not part of the fare cap, to replace the Cumbria Classic Routes? They may have done their homework on these 2 new routes, but if Stagecoach aren't going to give up the 5 then the 85 alone will cost them even if the 83 is bursting with fare paying passengers.

Problem is, the former would parallel the railway - you can do Lancaster to Preston in 15 minutes. As for Blackpool, unless it is a motorway route the most direct way would be an extension of the 89, although that won't be much quicker than the 42. But even then it is quicker to go by train via Preston.

Lonsdale are only running half of the 5 service as the Stagecoach 5 provides a link to and from Overton so I cannot see Stagecoach pulling out. The 83 will provide a link between the Vale and Beaumont areas of Lancaster part of which is unserved since Stagecoach put Deckers on the 2/100 so have to avoide Torisholme road low bridge. Cannot see much demand from Brookhouse as the only bus that would pay was the early morning Ingleton to Morecambe by Pennine pre de regulation that was all ways full by Caton a with students and had 2 Ribble dups from Brookhouse to Lancaster for schools and workers.

The 06.20 40 service (#15679) from Morecambe to Preston today was brought to an abrupt stop at the junction of Garstang Road and the A6, Catterall, and the seven or eight passengers were ordered to leave the bus immediately because the engine was on fire. A trail of diesel was visible on the road behind the bus, for about 40 feet (a spot of it can be seen in the photo). We had to wait just over 20 minutes for the next bus to Preston to come along and pick up the first bus's passengers.

My photo of the halted bus below.

Looks like the engine fire extinguished itself without too much damage being done.

Cumberland Council has announced some new routes and the continuation of others already receiving BSIP funding.

Mostly Stagecoach operated, unsurprisingly. Reays have a few routes.

Some of the new timetables have appeared on Bus Times, notably the X7 from Whitehaven to Millom and the 32 from Whitehaven to Egremont via St Bees.

I think some exploring might be in order.

Cumberland Council is pleased to announce the launch of several new subsidised bus services and the continuation of successful 2024 routes, delivered in a phased rollout beginning this November.

This initiative is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to improving public transport across the region and is backed by £3.55 million in government funding.

Phase 1: from 3 November 2025

Reays will operate:
Maryport – Dearham Town Service (#MD1)
Cockermouth – Maryport (#68)
Cockermouth Town Services (#C123)

Stagecoach will operate continue to:
Maryport – Frizington (#30)
Workington – Carlisle (#300)
Durdar to Cargo (#64), with initial service from 3 November to 1 December, after which there will be additional peak journeys and a link to Currock Community Centre (#71;93;64)
Millom Town Service (#M1 & #7), operating from 3 November to 1 December, after which it will become Whitehaven – Ravenglass / Ravenglass – Millom – Barrow (#X7 & 7)
Cleator Moor – West Cumberland Hospital (#22), operating from 3 November to 5 January 2026, when it will be upgraded to the new Whitehaven Town Services #22/#22A and #1/#1A

Phase 2 – Launching 1 December 2025

Stagecoach will operate:
Carlisle – Anthorn – Wigton (#71, #93, #64)
Whitehaven – Ravenglass / Ravenglass – Millom – Barrow & Whitehaven – St Bees – Egremont (#X7 & #7 & 32)

Reays will operate:
Carlisle – Anthorn (Sunday service) (#93Sun)

Phase 3 – Launching 5 January 2026

The final phase of the rollout expands services to key destinations and healthcare facilities.

Stagecoach will operate:
Carlisle – Cumberland Infirmary – Cockermouth – Whitehaven – West Cumberland Hospital (#600X)
Whitehaven Town Services (#22/#22A and #1/#1A)

Reays will operate:
Carlisle – Hadrian’s Wall (#HW1)
Locke Road Surgery & Carleton Clinic (#DR1)

Oops. Another "thermal incident", this time on the Distington by-pass and not in service. From the image in the linked report it looks like an Enviro 400 in X4/X5 Lakes Connection livery

Emergency services are currently responding to a bus fire on the A595 Distington bypass.

There are no reported injuries at this time.

A spokesperson for Stagecoach said: "We can confirm that one of our vehicles was involved in an incident on Thursday afternoon on the A595 near Parton, West Cumbria.

"The bus was out of service at the time and no passengers were on board. An internal investigation is under way to establish the cause, and we are liaising closely with Cumbria Police."

Ooh, looking forward to trying out the X7! A quick look at the timetable suggests that trying to connect with the 7 (to/from Barrow) is not going to be good though, since the X7 arrives around 20-30 min after the 7 has left and vice-versa in both directions. By serving Muncaster Castle and Gosforth it's serving some of the same places as the summer Wasdale explorer bus, so if the route's still around by the summer then altogether that should open up the west lakes a little bit more for foot passengers hopefully.

I can see why they've numbered it X7, as it's an extension of the 7, but there's already an X7 (the Blueworks service to Coniston) in the Furness/Duddon area so hopefully this won't cause any confusion.

I wonder if the closure between Corkickle and Whitehaven on the coast line will make the bus more time-preferable than it would otherwise have been.

15225 was destroyed by fire yesterday, from the pics I've seen, the fire started at the back, but there's not much left of the bus now.....happened at Frizington.

It looks like the 7 Barrow to Millom has a revised timetable from December, so connections between the 7 and X7 should be possible, maybe same bus throughout?

Yes looks like same bus 7 to X7 and vice versa. The puzzle on the X7 though is the short arriving Egremont 1814 and departing south again at 1841. Are there connections that I cannot see?

That's excellent to see. I didn't find that when looking early this morning.

Definitely going to be planning some trips out now that connection is there.

Shame they can't do something with that last Egremont trip as if customers use the 30 to/from Whitehaven to connect, there is a 20 minutes connection

Reported as having happened on the Distington by-pass, which is nowhere near Frizington. The bus had just worked service S81, 1520 Whitehaven Academy - Lowca, and was presumably returning out of service to Lillyhall.

Used 553 service today, has that always operated via A591? I recall going from Keswick to Carlisle the other way, head East on A66 fro keswick.

Services today were all over the place especially the X4/X5 and 555. I think traffic in Keswick was to blame.

Stagecoach has announced the withdrawal of the Central Lakes Dayrider ticket from Monday 3rd November, instead directing customers to single tickets or the North West Explorer ticket.

Withdrawal of the 'Central Lakes DayRider' Ticket from Monday 3rd November

From Monday 3rd November, the ‘Central Lakes DayRider’ ticket will no longer be available for purchase.
This change is part of our ongoing effort to simplify our ticket range and make it easier for passengers to select the option that best suits their journey.
Alternative ticket options include single fares or the North West Explorer ticket.

Ouch. That's not an improvement for the customer at all. But not surprising as they got rid of the Honister and Keswick Dayrider a few years ago

I suppose it was a pretty small area compared to NW Explorer. I would travel in from Penrith or Carlisle, the Central Lakes would not cover that.
