If trying to draw rail maps based on historical ‘nations’ why not try fitting it into the period when Northumbria included Edinburgh? It’s a good seven hundred years closer in time than when the Roman Wall formed a border… :D o_O

But even then, Scotland and England as we know them did not exist at the time of the Roman Wall, it has never represented the border between the two countries. I’m sure everyone realises that if being (serious)…
There is always going to be a bit of compromise common sense near the border.

For example, much of West Wirral receives its water (bills) from Welsh Water and in analogue days (ask your dad) received TV from HTV rather than Granada. This meant that it received the news from Cardiff rather than Manchester (which to be fair some would see as a massive positive!)

Surely it was the border between civilisation and the barbarians?

(Runs and hides)

Note that I didn't say which side was which

And never forget that the City of Liverpool arbitrarily decided to submerge the Welsh village of Capel Celyn to create a reservoir for the benefit of Liverpudlians. Not that long ago either. Not very relevant to Lydney I agree, but the thread is already off the rails.

In south Wales, people actively sought to receive their programmes from the Mendip transmitter rather than Wenvoe in order to get Channel 4 rather than S4C. Of course, if they put up 2 aerials they could receive both regions - and that still is the case now with digital Freeview - and would also be the case on the Wirral as the land is almost flat. The fact that people were/are picking up Welsh stations on the Wirral is because the signal from Moel-Y-Parc on the Clwydian range is coming in stronger than that from Winter Hill on the Pennines. (The weaker region normally loads in the low 800’s but with Freeview it is possible to move the channels to your own preference).

The Storeton transmitter now covers most of the Wirral and indeed parts of Flintshire. https://ukfree.tv/transmitters/tv/Storeton/PGSTART50/

It should also be noted that some remote communities in the Pennines were flooded in order to supply water to the great northern cities. Water is not taken directly by pipe to Liverpool from Celyn reservoir. The dam acts as a regulator for the flow of water into the Dee with the water for Liverpool being abstracted further downstream. Therefore, Wales benefitted from having this dam/reservoir in that it helped prevent flooding in the Dee valley.

Sorry to be way off topic - Lydney!

Although in Chester's case less than three miles from the border, with its football club famously straddling England/Wales.
Famous during Covid, when England and Wales had different travel restrictions. Also Llanymynech golf club!

Of course the National Eisteddfod has, in its history, been held in Birkenhead, Chester and Liverpool.

Tranmere Rovera has won the Welsh Cup.

Even in 2025 Royal Mail vans and some post boxes in North Wirral are bilingual. Some ATMs on the Wirral offer a Welsh language option.

My son has moved to Swansea and is in the second year of night school learning Welsh!

There is an RSPB centre on the Wirral crossing the border

I have a friend who lives on the Wirral who was headteacher of a school in Shotton. During COVID, they often had to explain their journey to the "germ police" at the Welsh border.

TfW translate East Didsbury but not Runcorn East!
I don't think so, on account of the "Dwyrain Runcorn" on the 197 screen earlier.

Dad (living in Bristol) put up two aerials so that he could tune S4C for the rugby.

Interesting. Think there is an inconsistency with their printed/pdf timetable. Not too sure if their translation of Liverpool South Parkway is accurate?

The only thing I don't understand with Lydney, even though it's TfW managed, there is no PAYG there - I get the purpose was South East Wales but considering it's TfW managed, it could be a Zone 5-7 like Maesteg.

Llanymynech was of course the terminus of the Shropshire & Montgomeryshire Railway, which did not quite reach Montgomeryshire.

I'm sure that there's good reason why the Welsh for south is so much shorter than for the other directions!

IIRC it's all to do with what's on your right and what's on your left when you're facing the rising sun. Or something like that.
Now getting back to Lydney...

TfW running outside Wales could be solved by Crosscountry taking over the Cheltenham services (therefore hand the stations to GWR?) and everyone would be delighted by Northern, a nationalised operator after all, taking over Shrewsbury-Crewe stoppers, Crewe-Chester shuttles and Chester-Lime Street. We'd then have enough 197s to overcome the worse-than-planned availability. We'd all love to have to change at Shrewsbury to get to Birmingham and Chester to get to Manchester too.
This would surely mean Lydney would be closed on Sundays, and some Saturdays if the Sun is shining or if there’s a big Christmas market or there’s a big football game.8-)

Thanks again XC for the quality service you provide.
