The recently cancelled Newquay train was Network Rail infrastructure not being ready, I believe? So, that's a shame. To Joe Public, a cancellation is a cancellation. Too many companies all wanting profit from one train too?

Would have been good to travel on that train - was hoping it was just postponed...... Anybody pick up the pieces?

I wanted to do skirl of the pipes a "few" years ago, but didn't. Managed the cambrian the other week which was excellent, bar the coaching stock maybe, but a nice trip. Enjoy what you can and as soon as you can. Shame, PF faded glory but a good outfit is my limited assessment.

Cue, "favourite F&W and/or Pathfinder rail tour memory"
F&W Skirl of the Pipes 4.
A cab ride on 26038 from Achnasheen to Strathcarron. I was recently given a photo of myself grinning out of the drivers window. Also had a ride in the rear cab of D200. And little did I know I would one day be a part owner of 20110!

UK railtours and Railway touring company already do occasionally tours starting north and going south, will probably see that more often, UKR and Pathfinder have already run quite a few joint tours and they'll probably try to poach as many staff/volunteers as they can

I would absolutely like Pathfinder to continue to trade but I find it more likely that they will be the first of the current crop to throw in the towel. When they do run a tour, I generally find them to be decent days out with good stewarding on board. But they can't continue in the same way as they have, particularly this year. I think I have had 4 tours I have been booked on cancelled by them this year alone and that just isn't acceptable when my booking with them in the first place often requires me to rearrange plans with work. Whilst they are the worst culprits, I have also had SRPS and UKR cancelling tours on me this year as well so it is a problem across the industry and has really softened my eagerness to book onto tours, especially on dates where I need to re-jig my work rota.

For the past 18 months, I have generally always had 4 or 5 tours booked for future dates but that has dropped to 2 now and I can't say I have really been monitoring new tours going on sale recently either. I will probably do these 2 and then take a break until next year and see how things develop in the coming months but it does have the feel of the start of the end for enthusiast based rail tours. I will have to get my fill of 40013 by spending even more money on the dining trains in the future
As predicted back in August. Entirely unsurprising as they seemed to have given up a long time ago.

Sad but it's just a reflection of the rail tour scene at the moment. No doubt all those people who have refused to book onto rail tours in the recent past will want to get onto their final one to say "they were there." I'd imagine that if that is the case, it'll be quite annoying for the PF staff knowing that the final one is only existing because so many of their tours have had to be canned because of low numbers! A little irony to see them into retirement

It’s not so much a case of “refused” as “there’s been little of interest to justify the cost and the ones I have been interested in have been cancelled”.

No refusal, just declining to pay hugely increased prices for less ‘product’ in the form of out and back excursions kettled inside silent, experience-free, non air-conned coffins. The joy has been sucked out of railtours for me personally.

OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM PATHFINDER RAILTOURS
For immediate release on Tuesday 23rd September 2025
It is with a very heavy heart that the management and staff of Pathfinder Railtours announce that after more than five decades of running excursions and charter services, the Stroud based company will close its doors in December this year.
With two November railtours advertised, and open for bookings, these will be some of the final trains operating under the well-known and trusted brand.
We’ll be heading to the popular destinations of the South West, Shrewsbury and Chester.
We propose to run the last-ever Pathfinder Railtours excursion on 20th December 2025, with the itinerary to be announced shortly.
Subject to availability, it will feature ‘Western’ No. D1015 Western Champion, courtesy of the Diesel Traction Group.
Today, the railway industry is in a totally different place to where it was in 1973, when Tony Fielding and Peter Watts set out with their first excursion from Gloucester to Pwllheli, under the brand of ‘F&W Railtours’.
This was the precursor to today’s Pathfinder Railtours company.
Pathfinder Railtours was born in 1987, when Peter Watts rebranded the company.
The following year, it was one of the first train charter businesses to introduce a full dining service.
Over the last 50 years, the team at Pathfinder Railtours have run special trains to just about everywhere and have done just about everything!
From steam trips over unusual routes, to taking a diesel-hydraulic ‘Western’ locomotive to the north and west of Scotland, reaching Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh.
It has been a pleasure to provide high quality days out to our thousands of customers, and whether you have travelled once or numerous times, the staff at Pathfinder, both past and present, would like to offer our sincere thanks for your custom and company.
Pathfinder Railtours would also like to thank its customers for their support of the on-train raffles that has helped raise more than half a million pounds for charity.
Business founder, Peter Watts commented: “When five years is a long time in the rail industry, to have achieved more than 50 years of continued operation, is truly remarkable, and something that I am incredibly privileged to have undertaken.
Equally, I am proud, not only of the team, that over the years has delivered our programme, but also our wonderful stewards who have volunteered their time on board to ensure safe operation of the trains.
Finally last but not least, my sincere thanks to our loyal passengers who have supported us, enjoyed numerous excursions, and hopefully travelled to many places they may not, otherwise, have visited.”
Barry Cordell, the now Chief Executive and owner of Pathfinder Railtours said: “Over the almost 30 years I have been involved with the company, we have achieved so much, but I now feel it is the right time to step back and retire.
I would like to join Peter in thanking our team, our volunteers and our passengers for all their support and loyalty over the years, and we wish you all well in the future.
The positive support that we have enjoyed from the majority of the rail industry has always been appreciated and my thanks also go to them and the TOCs that have run our many charter trains over the years.”
We would like to emphasise that Pathfinder Railtours remains operational during this period.
It’s not insolvent in any way and it will be wound down in an orderly fashion, leaving no outstanding debts.
We are looking forward to running our final tours, ahead of bidding farewell, following the operation of the soon to be announced pre-Christmas charter in December.
As a company, it has been our pleasure and privilege to serve our passengers, who have shared our passion and enjoyment for travel over more than five decades.
We hope that many will join us on our final trains for a last journey with “Pathfinder” and no doubt, to reminisce about days gone by!
(sourced from the pure-text version of the statement, published by Jack Boskett on Pathfinder's website and linked to in post #91)
This statement provides advance information on the company. Given that closure is due to retirement, no further information will be released at this time, and we are not accepting any further questions. END.

Days like last Saturday (20/9) when PF had two cancellations* to its name on the same day show the difficulties it was in. The writing was on the wall.

(*4 day autumn highlander and Atlantic Coast Express)
The latter's cancellation must be down to the state of the track due to soil moisture deficit, between Gillingham and Axminster, speed restrictions and probable lack of paths.

It was because the upgrade to the Newquay line isn't finished.

Back 12+ years ago I did a least two tours with them. Western Champion to Penzance and Settle & Carlisle then return via the Cumbrian coast. Settle & Carlisle then return either the same or direct via Shap was probably Pathfinder too.

I wonder if Vintage Trains will consider picking up some of the lost business? No 'coffin' stock but their upcoming tours are not exactly cheap and to me illogical that shorter and straightforward diesel tours are more expensive than steam. E.g Diesel to Holyhead & Blackpool £127.20 while part steam to Carlisle then S&C and Newcastle-upon-Tyne both £121.90. The odd amounts are due to the 6% booking fee.

I did many good Pathfinder tours back in the days where the MK1 coaches were based at Eastleigh and they had plenty of tours which started in this area (Basingstoke/Salisbury/Westbury etc) which did help (no need for accommodation).
All that changed when the coaches were relocated to Burton and the tours started in the Midlands area making things more expensive to reach.

But in that situation it swings around to people in the Midlands being able to afford the tours because they started local and didn't require hotels

Found out why the exe parrett tour is no longer advertising tickets on the pathfinder tours website booking page.
Its due to the unstable earthworks near Crewkerne so N.R. have disallowed the tour not to go ahead as their civil engineering works wouldn't be ready for the 8 Nov 2025 exe parrett tour so pathfinder have had no choice but to pull the tour. My source of the information about the unstable earthworks at crewkerne was from me ringing pathfinder enquiring about the Exe Parrett tour with a booking agent.
I suppose this applies to any other T.O.C. advertising tours between Yeovil and Exeter Central also.

Although tours on the West of England line can be few and far between even at the best of times due to the timetable limitations

This booking fee nonsense is creeping into everything these days.

I remember with affection the days when F&W ran brilliant tours from Plymouth, back in the 1970s/80s. Back then, railtours were fun, but over the years the fun has steadily been taken out of it. I hope that railtours can continue, for those who still enjoy them (and to be fair there are many), but I am unlikely to go on any more, with all the restrictions of the modern railway and the elfansafety religion that has taken over.

Yes, my first tour was in 1983, The Yorkshire Pudding. Even on the Skirl 4 mentioned above I shall always remember the Plymouth platform trolley being loaded onto the ferry at Kyle.

I see the final tour details will be announced tomorrow, for Dec 20th. I think

Fully booked already
Yes you'd expect that really.......the start is far too inconvenient for me, and too close to Christmas, (and I'm not that fussed about westerns either) but I just wanted to take a look......but the site's crashed.

Its quite a boring route for me, might have got in early if it was something more interesting. Hope the western stays serviceable.
