I've noticed that every time I've taken a 399 from Parkgate they never seem to go beyond 50mph, considering there being a 55mph speed limit between Parkgate and Rotherham. I'm not from around Sheffield so I'm not all too familiar with how their system works, but is there a reason they don't go to full line speed despite having a top speed of 60?

I'd assume it would be the 5mph doesn't make that much a difference in the timetable, but any intel would be appreciated

There’s probably some slack in the timetable meaning they don’t have to go full pelt.

Used this service for the first time the other day. Was impressed with the smoothness of the ride and acceleration. Services was delayed leaving Parkgate but managed to make up the time along the way despite also needing to wait a while at a signal. Probably helped that it didn’t need to stop at all stops along the way as it wasn’t that busy. The majority of users got on at Parkgate and Rotherham and travelled all the way into Sheffield although I think a tram from Meadowhall passed the Meadowhall South junction just before us.

main reason is the distance between Parkgate and Rotherham Central - on departure from Parkgate they can't accelerate much until after crossing over then they need to start braking in good time for Rotherham Central as they have to pass through the main line platform at low speed.
