Return tickets with no particular destination - does this tool exist?

Hi all,

Apologies if this is the incorrect board. I usually inhabit the 'Buses and Coaches' section.

I'm in search of a particular tool that may or may not exist. For some background, I'm looking to have a day out somewhere, but nowhere in particular. I want to book a cheap(ish) return ticket from my home station.

Is there a tool to search for direct trains from a station with no particular destination? One that would show me a list of places I could go. It would save me trawling through maps and spamming the trip search engine!

Note that it will only give you walk-up returns, there is a disclaimer at the bottom of the page, so if where you are is Advance Single galore you may want to just do it yourself

Very interesting. I see that it is not limited to direct trains, but possibly with just one change, From Southport it included both Preston and Chester within a £25 budget. From Southport to Preston involves a change at Wigan, and to Chester involves a change at Liverpool.

Stations used to have fixed information boards showing the destinations from that station and train times

Also it’s worth mentioning the current Northern offer of c. £16 for a day ranger

Sounds a good idea, but worth remembering that a Rover or Ranger ticket on the day for that area may be cheaper than a return (as above post)! Chances are not, those are mainly for multi-ststion trips I suppose, but worth a look just in case - and gives more flexibility.

Is there a Wayfarer that covers the OPs area (which appears to be Chesterfield/Derbyshire)?

We are adding walk-up single combinations at some point in the future to allow for single leg pricing. But equally the price is intended to be an up to 'headline' rather than a 'it's always going to be this price' to allow for splits and advance purchases once you click through.

We have a few barred locations but it doesn't restrict itself to direct trains in the slightest, the primary filter is budget and then with some weighting of time by train vs other modes.
