Hi All,
Taking the train today from Birmingham New Street to London Euston with my girlfriend, and we were asked to show tickets and railcard (16-25), by a revenue protection officer (I think these are different to regular ticket inspectors?)
I have the railcard app and showed immediately, however my girlfriend who doesn’t travel by train as often was struggling to find hers on her phone, although she knew she had bought one just before Christmas, so knew she had a valid railcard.
I politely asked the inspector for five minutes to find the railcard, whilst he checked tickets further up the train, but he said no, and said she would have to pay a Fixed Penalty Notice since she didn’t show thee railcard immediately, saying that not being able to show the railcard immediately was grounds for a fine. I started arguing with him, asking again for 5 minutes to find the railcard, he threatened to throw us off the train at the next station - he was very aggressive and threatening. This went on for a few minutes, until fortunately my girlfriend found the railcard (it was on Trip.com app not Trainline like she initially thought - clearly an innocent mistake), which he accepted.
I have some questions:
1) Is it true I have to show railcard immediately on demand ? The apps can be unreliable due to internet connection issues etc , it hardly seems unreasonable to ask for five minutes to find the railcard !
2) Is there a place I can complain about the officer? I really feel his behaviour was very inappropriate, and was quite upset. He was really very aggressive and rude - anyone with a shred of humanity would allow 5 minutes to find a railcard. My girlfriend is foreign and can struggle with English in stressful situations, and if I wasn’t there she would probably have ended up paying the fine due to his bullying behaviour… There are signs up all over the train (rightly) saying not to abuse staff - but apparently it’s acceptable for staff to abuse customers? It seems to me that this officer works the job simply for the opportunity to bully passengers…
