Upgrading Season Ticket to First

I have a standard class season ticket loaded onto a Southern KeyGo card. I asked at a Southern ticket office to upgrade (one way, as a one off)to First Class. They said this isn't possible.

I was expecting to pay the difference between a Standard Class day single and the equivalent First Class ticket.

Should I have been able to buy such an upgrade?

Just out of interest, how would you upgrade the season ticket? Is it even possible to excess a season ticket? Admittedly I've never been asked to upgrade a season ticket to First Class before but wouldn't have thought it was possible without refunding the original ticket (which of course wouldn't be good value for money as such because of how the refund is worked out) and then selling a brand new First Class ticket for however long the customer wanted it for.

It is done on a journey by journey basis, charging the difference between standard and first class singles. However, you can't excess a season for a change of route.

Exactly this. I regularly do a large number of these every week.

So you work out the excess between the Standard Class and First Class Returns, sell customer the excess and tell them to show it alongside their existing Season ticket?

No, single fares are used rather than returns. It is only done for each one-way journey.

Ok. So you do what I mentioned but with singles instead of returns? I've never been asked for this before, so would have to see what the manual/knowledge base says.

For season tickets should always be the difference in the single fares.

I can't remember how its done, but I've certainly excess a season ticket to 1st class (on an ad-hoc basis - and paid roughly what I thought seemed reasonable) plenty of times - maybe guards on my route are just very competent - or perhaps more likely used to the amount of people who "accidentally" sat in 1st class and claimed to not realise this fact although as a season ticket holder, this did seem to be stretching the bound of credibility a fair bit - especially when I've seen them be "confused" several days in a a row. I have even swapped a season ticket to a 1st class version to (and paid the difference).
