Plans to introduce 730/2's to Birmingham from w/c 15th September at the weekends, with M-F operation from w/c 29th September.
Do you know what made WMT change thier minds about using 730/2s on the Euston - Birmingham route? I thought that was supposed to be 350s only?

As detailed in another thread, the rollout is really very tricky so necessitates a few trips that weren’t originally planned to fit round the stabling restrictions and keep the fleet cycling while managing the cascade out of 350/2.

Long term when all the stabling is available and the fleet fully rolled out, the use will settle down to what it is meant to be. I understand there are some still specific trains throughout the week that will be 730 either for stock cycling reasons or for capacity reasons, as a 10 car 730 is equivalent to a 16 car 350.

So, if I’ve understood correctly, does this mean that 730s on the Birmingham’s are only temporary, and long-term it’ll only be Euston-MK/Tring and Euston-Crewe(/Manchester)?

Regardless, it’s good to see the extra capacity coming to the Birmingham services, be it 730s or 12.350.

Having talked about length the 0656 was short formed to 5 this morning (and still had a dodgy back cab door with the guard working it from elsewhere having had to slam it repeatedly at Leighton) and coped OK, there were a few standees on arrival at Euston but it was by no means full and standing.

Also appeared to have faulty aircon in the rear coach as the windows steamed up.

I was looking at Traksy for the present track diagrams at Bletchley when I saw 2K16 going through. According to Traksy this was a Class 506 EMU which I thought was odd so I referred to Realtimetrains which listed the units as 730040+021. I had to look up Class 506 and found that they were 1950s Woodhead overhead DC units.

Now I realise that several classes of trains are grouped together for planning purposes as they have similar speed limits etc. but to class a 100mph AC with an obsolete DC unit seems weird,

2K16Milton Keynes Central to London Euston

110mph London Midland Class 506 EMU service

I believe it was a way of getting past SRT restrictions, something about only being able to have one set of SRTs for a class of train on each section of track. When the 350s were modified to run at 110mph, the Class 506 was chosen as a way to get around this.

So assume the units should get new route maps above doors?

Some already have. I'm not quite sure why they don't just put St Albans on too then the whole network is covered (much as they're unlikely to work there).
Perhaps reason is they can’t work on St Albans that’s why they don’t put

They aren't planned to, but they weren't planned to work to Birmingham a couple of weeks ago. Might as well just put all LNR branded routes on, it's also useful information for those changing onto the branch.
So originally they planned not to work on Birmingham Euston services until few weeks ago?

I've yet to see a strong argument for not displaying an all LNWR route map on all trains.

Is there anything available to show which services are likely to get the 12 car treatment, or is this just a general thing right now? I assume that "12 car 350 operation north of Northampton" would involve them also being 12 car south of there, where it would be very welcome?

The 8.16 off International, my usual train, is loaded until Coventry and then fills up again at Rugby and Northampton. From MK it's packed. A 12 car would be welcome whether that is from Brum or an additional 4 from Northampton. This is the first Off Peak from Brum.

Route map above the door on 215 showing the stations to Birmingham from Rugby. I know Northampton isn't shown as on a loop

Although I would agree, it would probably be better to at least mention the existence of the Abbey Line at Watford Junction (Even if 'change here for services to St Alban's Abbey's). Similar to Rugeley (although that might draw attention to the absolutely crap connections at Rugeley where one train to Birmingham departs 1 minute before a train to Crewe arrives etc)
