From internal sources I can't name. I've also been told that LNER will not introduce the full December timetable straight away, it will be a phased introduction.

Several services will not run, potentially for several months.
Correct. Roughly six passenger trains missing to start with.
Will LNER update their published December 2025 timetable to an accurate list of the train services they will run in that timetable? If several services currently shown to be running will not run the published timetable really should be updated so it is accurate. It will not enhance LNER's reputation if they publish several services in their official timetable which they do not then run. I assume the services which will not run in December 2025 will not be introduced until the May 2026 timetable at the earliest.

The extra services are planned to be introduced in March, whether that does happen...

The question is what are the main destinations from Durham? I'd venture it's London and Newcastle, and not Peterborough or Edinburgh.

If I'm correct there then it's arguably gaining, not losing, by having a better regular interval service which will be less crowded and thus cheaper.

and quicker journey times to / from London.

Its been published. Look at RTT for the first week of the timetabke.

The times on RTT for new timetable are still showing the trains (from what my internal source told me) which initially are (at the moment) not planned to run from the start of the December Timetable.

How many trains, and on what diagrams, in the new timetable are due to be 5 coach?
All of the KX-York (currently 9-cars), KX-Lincoln, KX-Middlesbrough and KX-Hull trains except for one Lincoln return trip which is 2x5 - that's 6 diagrams, although one goes to Newcastle and back on a stopper as part of it.

At least three further Newcastle stopper diagrams, probably more - this bit is difficult to tell. All of the Newcastle stopper diagrams have part of their diagram going to West Yorkshire destinations as well (for example 1D04/1A16 from KX Leeds and back then does 1N08/1Y19/1N33 to Newcastle and back to KX, then back to Newcastle).

At least two West Yorkshire diagrams - 1A06 from Leeds to KX is a 10-coach which splits to form the diagrams starting with 1D09 and 1N82, and the diagram that starts with 1A09 is a five-car that later joins to a 5-car that's arrived from Newcastle to form a 10-car 1D26 to Skipton.

For comparison, there are nine 5-car diagrams in the current timetable
  • 2 York-Newcastle shuttles
  • 1 which does a Leeds-KX round trip
  • 1 which does 3 trips between KX and Harrogate
  • 1 which does a KX-Harrogate round trip and a single journey to Lincoln
  • 4 which cover the rest of the Lincoln, Middlesbrough and Hull turns

There are no Kings Cross to York services, except the over night stabler in the new timetable?

Not true, they are still every 2 hours but with fewer stops. xx:27 from York/xx:47 from Kings Cross.

How busy are the York stoppers at present? They seem to very often be part of cheap splits at the moment which would suggest they are not very busy.
Took 1Y86 (1402 from York) a few times, would say it’s lightly used and seldom gets to half-loading a 9 car.
But the same seat could be taken by 3 passengers within a trip, so I do think it’s rather well-used than busy. With another post asking why the ECML lacks a LNR equivalent, I would say the role is done by this stopper.

In that case it sounds like dropping these to 5 car is probably overall a sensible move.

Nothing is actually planned though is it?
there are conversations, there is stuff in the back ground going on, no 91 diagram to Newcastle is confirmed.

LNER have not confirmed it, it is everyone 'railway rumour' and people on a forum thinking one is going there, when as yet it isn't.
I've seen actual diagrams. It's unlikely they are made up. If the 91 doesn't work that trip, something else will have to give. Perhaps tighten up some turn round times at King's Cross, which is also a performance risk.

I've also seen diagrams, doesn't mean they are happening.

As I've stated, from very reliable sources, several services will not run from start of December, one of which is the 91 to Newcastle. Whether that runs with a 91 later in the timetable only senior people at LNER will know.

If the 91 doesn't work to Newcastle, it's sits at Ferme Park until needed is what I've been told.

It appears that what would be the 91 turn to/from Newcastle constitutes some of the "missing" services in December.

The 1440 goes to Harrogate, which would even more challenging for a 91.

Hang on though - the 1440 (1D19) is on the original timetable, but it's not in RTT. The Leeds route services jump from 1D18 (1410) to 1D20 (1510). The return (1A33 1833 Harrogate-KX) isn't in RTT either. Are these two of the services that have disappeared?

Edit: also missing from RTT - 1D01 0540 KX-Leeds and 1A01 0530 Doncaster-KX.

Edit 2: They're only missing from the first week of the RTT timetable. They re-appear on 20th December.

Just checking the source CIF files, 1A33 (Y11740 on weekdays) is still in the timetable, but it's cancelled for the first week.

I'm sure the LNER planners know what they are doing...
That would seem to make them unique amongst TOC planning departments! <:D

I'm kidding, I'm kidding, stand down any planners out for my blood! ;)

I suspect any STP variations (inc. Temporary cancellations) are only entered for the first week at the moment.

Might be that later weeks follow suit in due course in line with STP timescales.

Yes, so those (1A01/1D01/1D19/1A33) may be four of the six supposed temporary cancellations.

1A01 and 1D01 are odd ones, though. They're the first legs of long diagrams, one starting from Doncaster Carr and one from Bounds Green, but if both are cancelled it doesn't affect unit placement (both are 9-car Azuma diagrams, one simply starts from London anyway and the other unit goes empty from Doncaster to Leeds, as you can see from the first week's diagrams). So is this a crewing issue, rather than a traction one?

Maybe the 1D19/1A33 unit does the 91 Newcastle service then swaps back in London?

Yes, very possible (it's a 9-car off 1E09 as well, which is nice). The 225 set off 1A18 can just hang around until it does 1N35 that evening.

Though having said that, if you're going to do that, why not just send the 225 on 1D19/1A33 anyway and terminate it short at Leeds?

Depends what you would do with that set in Leeds. As possibly it could be a Kings Cross crew, so would there be a Leeds driver to take set ecs to/from Neville Hill.

No platform capacity at Leeds. Already thought of that one.

All (or at least most) will be extended to Middlesbrough too if all goes to plan in Dec 2027 , probs another reason they are all 5 car now to make that transition ad simple as possible

This is one element of the new timetable I’m really not keen on. Essentially this is a downgrade to 5-car trains. We’ve already seen it with the Lincoln trains, now for the York trains too. That’s another 5-car path out of King’s Cross not making full use of the capacity available.

Sometimes the Middlesbrough train at present is more or less full which is fast from KGX to York , especially on a Thursday and Friday so be intrigued to see if a 5 will be enough for the KGX to York portion when the full service kicks in now it’ll stop at more intermediate stations
