a year?

So, fewer than 4 each way per day. Or put another way, 1 passenger for every other train that calls at both.

You can see why that link is going…
That's only full journeys from Newark to Retford, though. For example, someone who wants to travel from Newark to any station on the Sheffield-Lincoln axis (apart from Lincoln itself) from would need to change at Retford.

That's not really the point, though. There aren't that many LNER stations on the ECML and for LNER to simply abandon trains between two fairly close stations is somewhat bizarre.

5,560 a year so just under 8 each way per day but the point is still valid, you can see why that link is going.

Was it in the consultation? One presumes so.

I assume it's a pathing issue, as the 2-hourly (ish) York semifast still exists, it just misses one of them out unlike now.

But if it facilities more longer distance journeys and makes better use of the available capacity isn't that, overall, better for more people? There should be more services between Retford and Newark but they suffer from being on an extremely busy section of comparatively highspeed two track railway. If they were on a branch from the ECML then they'd absolutely have at least one train an hour each way calling at them. But sadly, for them, they're not.

The calls won't have been removed for nothing and I reckon that in order to make the timetable work elsewhere a sacrifice has had to be made. See also Northallerton and Durham who are in similar positions at having lost out (though their alternative provision is certainly stronger).

I mean really what we need is a new set of fast lines to take the long distance (say London - Leeds/York and northwards) high speed traffic off of this section of the ECML and onto dedicated infrastructure which would release significant capacity allowing for better services between Retford and Newark. But that sort of idea is a crazy of course....

As someone who uses Durham quite often for the last three years or so, the lost of most LNER direct to Edinburgh and Peterborough (onwards to Cambridge and Stansted) is quite disappointing.

I can understand Newark and Retford, and to some extent Northallerton. However I’d say Durham is stretching things too far. This is a significant railhead, and justifies better.

Agreed, Durham is definitely poor. Though at least the morning peak gap has been plugged by a short LNER working from Darlington to Newcastle. But otherwise it's not great.

The question is what are the main destinations from Durham? I'd venture it's London and Newcastle, and not Peterborough or Edinburgh.

If I'm correct there then it's arguably gaining, not losing, by having a better regular interval service which will be less crowded and thus cheaper. The Retford/Newark thing is an issue (though some places have done worse in the past, see Polesworth for an example) but I'm not sure it really matters that much whether a couple of stations in the North East have direct services to Peterborough or not as hardly anyone will actually want to go there. The argument is basically the same as the loss of direct services between MKC and Cumbria/Scotland - yes, it's a bit annoying for the few that do that journey, but the overall benefit wins out and a change isn't that painful, plus the rather larger number of people travelling between MKC and Birmingham will have a cheaper, less crowded semifast service instead.

Those two do rank top of the list of Durham, with Edinburgh ranked 5th having around 153 daily trips. (15XX between NCL and DHM, 5XX between KGX and DHM)

In terms of intervals, however - I do not see getting all 4 calling northbound trains within a 17 minute gap (with reference from RTT) and nothing else during day times is better than current, but that could just be me.

London being almost hourly clockface rather than a bit messy seems a big improvement if London is indeed the main destination.

You're probably right on Newcastle services overall but it's not terrible.

For Cambridge there'll be the hourly Stevenage connection (and longer and more frequent services between Stevenage and Cambridge than from Peterborough).

There's already a thread on if / why Sheffield to Luton Airport rail services are needed; I think (without having used any of them) that Newcastle's a better quantity than Leeds Bradford or Manchester, but I don't know how frequently Stansted works out better for destination choice or price.

Except that the morning "peak gap" train (0808 from Darlington) strikes me as a little too late for a lot of people working in Newcastle. The peak trains in the mornings are 1S01 (0710 at Darlo) and 9E05 (0745). 1S01 also stops at Northallerton currently; its successor no longer does.

Given that a number of the Newcastle stoppers are going to have to be 5-car (the 801/2s can only just cover the Edinburgh diagrams, let alone the stoppers), that may not be the case at all.

Is there really that heavy a peak flow at 0710? That gets to Newcastle at 0745. But either way there is still an 0706 and 0711 in the new timetable so that's well covered. Whilst the 0745 is still there just slightly re-timed to 0751. The problematic gap was the loss of the 0803 to Aberdeen (which seems like a much more likely peak service to me?) which has now been filled by the 0808 instead.

It seems to me that Durham is well catered for in the morning peak now that the 0808 has been added to the timetable?
1S01 also stops at Northallerton currently; its successor no longer does.
As noted, Northerallerton is another loser for sure.

I mean, yes southbound semi-expresses from Edinburgh do get crappy occasionally, especially during end of term times and the new faster, emptier service could be nice should it be a 9 car than 5.
However, if this comes in expense of a rather reliable hourly service to Edinburgh, then I'm not too sure everyone is happy on that.

The busiest train, purely from my observations at Durham was the old 1W02, now replaced by the 0808 ex Darlington service.

Which tallies with what I've heard and makes sense considering it's arrival time in Newcastle. Hence why its loss was a serious concern to the point of needing plugging with a short working from Darlington to Newcastle!

I don't know about 1W02 (because it's too late for me), but 1S01 and 9E05 always fill up well at Darlo and especially at Durham. A lot of students going to college in Newcastle as well, for whom I'd guess 1W02 may be a little too late.

I'd be interested to know how many people from stations between Donny and Newcastle fly from Stansted with any regularity. I am suspecting a fairly round number :)

(Probably not none, but I don't think it's going to be enough to plan a timetable around, and many would drive)

Will the coming of the CAFs improve this, I guess? Or are they just drop in replacements for Mk4 sets and thus only providing capacity uplift on Leeds services?

I seem to recall there will be 10 class 897s, which will be an increase on the current MK4 fleet. I’m happy to be corrected but believe there are only 7 MK4 rakes.

I've travelled Darlington to Stansted a couple of time.

But I stopped when a LNER broke down, and took 2 hours to move it on its GU to Stevenage to terminate.
Got to airport with 5 minutes to spare and booking priority security and just made the flight.

Last time I flew from Stansted I drove (and yes I know accidents happen on motorways).

Using the Waze app for routing I seem to miss all traffic jams far better than if using google maps.

Nearly All of the 10 Newcastle stopper diagrams interwork with Leeds services anyway. There is only one of the ten diagrams (1N03/1Y14/1N11) that sticks solely to the route.

There is 1Y06/1N05/1Y16, but that's a 5-car which joins with another 5-car to form 1D26 King's Cross-Skipton later on.

1N10/1Y21 is also definitely a 5-car. The others aren't clear yet.

All of the 2-hourly York stoppers will also be 5-car vice 9-car at present.

Only 4 rakes of MK4 in service each day, occasionally 5 sets.

By the time CAF units arrive. Timetable may yet again of been altered, and most certainly diagrams will be rewritten.

Durham interests me with family at University in Newcastle and Durham, their home in Essex.

From internal sources I can't name. I've also been told that LNER will not introduce the full December timetable straight away, it will be a phased introduction.

Several services will not run, potentially for several months.

Correct. Roughly six passenger trains missing to start with.

Correct. Roughly six passenger trains missing to start with.
Will additional stops be put into other services to compensate as I assume some of the missing services were due to call at some of the minor stations such as Northallerton, Retford, Grantham etc. that have a less frequent service?

That's a lot of people to fit into an hourly King's Cross service where, as far as I can see, at least half of the diagrams are going to be 5-car.

As a Thirsk passenger I can say that thus far we have been clobbered, and are set to be again. To go to Newcastle as I often do, we have to change at Northallerton. The wait there on both legs is shaping up to be around 45 mins a time.
